Surah 68 of 114 · Makki
سُورَةُ القَلَمِ
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
1
نٓ ۚ وَٱلْقَلَمِ وَمَا يَسْطُرُونَ
نٓ ۚnoonNunوَٱلْقَلَمِwal-qalamiBy the penوَمَاwamāand whatيَسْطُرُونَyasṭurūnathey write
Nun. By the pen and what they inscribe
⤳ Link
68:1
2
مَآ أَنتَ بِنِعْمَةِ رَبِّكَ بِمَجْنُونٍۢ
مَآmāNotأَنتَantayou (are)بِنِعْمَةِbiniʿ'matiby (the) Graceرَبِّكَrabbika(of) your Lordبِمَجْنُونٍۢbimajnūnina madman
You are not, [O Muhammad], by the favor of your Lord, a madman
⤳ Link
68:2
3
وَإِنَّ لَكَ لَأَجْرًا غَيْرَ مَمْنُونٍۢ
وَإِنَّwa-innaAnd indeedلَكَlakafor youلَأَجْرًاla-ajransurely (is) a rewardغَيْرَghayrawithoutمَمْنُونٍۢmamnūninend
And indeed, for you is a reward uninterrupted

68:3
4
وَإِنَّكَ لَعَلَىٰ خُلُقٍ عَظِيمٍۢ
وَإِنَّكَwa-innakaAnd indeed, youلَعَلَىٰlaʿalāsurely (are)خُلُقٍkhuluqin(of) a moral characterعَظِيمٍۢʿaẓīmingreat
And indeed, you are of a great moral character

5
فَسَتُبْصِرُ وَيُبْصِرُونَ
فَسَتُبْصِرُfasatub'ṣiruSo you will seeوَيُبْصِرُونَwayub'ṣirūnaand they will see
So you will see and they will see

68:5
6
بِأَييِّكُمُ ٱلْمَفْتُونُ
بِأَييِّكُمُbi-ayyikumuWhich of youٱلْمَفْتُونُl-maftūnu(is) the afflicted one
Which of you is the afflicted [by a devil]

68:6
7
إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَن ضَلَّ عَن سَبِيلِهِۦ وَهُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِٱلْمُهْتَدِينَ
إِنَّinnaIndeedرَبَّكَrabbakayour LordهُوَhuwaHeأَعْلَمُaʿlamu(is) most knowingبِمَنbimanof (he) whoضَلَّḍallahas strayedعَنʿanfromسَبِيلِهِۦsabīlihiHis wayوَهُوَwahuwaand Heأَعْلَمُaʿlamu(is) most knowingبِٱلْمُهْتَدِينَbil-muh'tadīnaof the guided ones
Indeed, your Lord is most knowing of who has gone astray from His way, and He is most knowing of the [rightly] guided

68:7
8
فَلَا تُطِعِ ٱلْمُكَذِّبِينَ
فَلَاfalāSo (do) notتُطِعِtuṭiʿiobeyٱلْمُكَذِّبِينَl-mukadhibīnathe deniers
Then do not obey the deniers
⤳ Link
68:8
9
وَدُّوا۟ لَوْ تُدْهِنُ فَيُدْهِنُونَ
وَدُّوا۟waddūThey wishلَوْlawthatتُدْهِنُtud'hinuyou should compromiseفَيُدْهِنُونَfayud'hinūnaso they would compromise
They wish that you would soften [in your position], so they would soften [toward you]

68:9
10
وَلَا تُطِعْ كُلَّ حَلَّافٍۢ مَّهِينٍ
وَلَاwalāAnd (do) notتُطِعْtuṭiʿobeyكُلَّkullaeveryحَلَّافٍۢḥallāfinhabitual swearerمَّهِينٍmahīninworthless
And do not obey every worthless habitual swearer

68:10
11
هَمَّازٍۢ مَّشَّآءٍۭ بِنَمِيمٍۢ
هَمَّازٍۢhammāzinDefamerمَّشَّآءٍۭmashāingoing aboutبِنَمِيمٍۢbinamīminwith malicious gossip
[And] scorner, going about with malicious gossip

68:11
12
مَّنَّاعٍۢ لِّلْخَيْرِ مُعْتَدٍ أَثِيمٍ
مَّنَّاعٍۢmannāʿinA preventerلِّلْخَيْرِlil'khayriof (the) goodمُعْتَدٍmuʿ'tadintransgressorأَثِيمٍathīminsinful
A preventer of good, transgressing and sinful

68:12
13
عُتُلٍّۭ بَعْدَ ذَٰلِكَ زَنِيمٍ
عُتُلٍّۭʿutullinCruelبَعْدَbaʿdaafterذَٰلِكَdhālika(all) thatزَنِيمٍzanīminutterly useless
Cruel, moreover, and an illegitimate pretender

68:13
14
أَن كَانَ ذَا مَالٍۢ وَبَنِينَ
أَنanBecauseكَانَkāna(he) isذَاdhāa possessorمَالٍۢmālin(of) wealthوَبَنِينَwabanīnaand children
Because he is a possessor of wealth and children

15
إِذَا تُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْهِ ءَايَـٰتُنَا قَالَ أَسَـٰطِيرُ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ
إِذَاidhāWhenتُتْلَىٰtut'lāare recitedعَلَيْهِʿalayhito himءَايَـٰتُنَاāyātunāOur Versesقَالَqālahe saysأَسَـٰطِيرُasāṭīruStoriesٱلْأَوَّلِينَl-awalīna(of) the former (people)
When Our verses are recited to him, he says, "Legends of the former peoples

68:15
16
سَنَسِمُهُۥ عَلَى ٱلْخُرْطُومِ
سَنَسِمُهُۥsanasimuhuWe will brand himعَلَىʿalāonٱلْخُرْطُومِl-khur'ṭūmithe snout
We will brand him upon the snout

68:16
17
إِنَّا بَلَوْنَـٰهُمْ كَمَا بَلَوْنَآ أَصْحَـٰبَ ٱلْجَنَّةِ إِذْ أَقْسَمُوا۟ لَيَصْرِمُنَّهَا مُصْبِحِينَ
إِنَّاinnāIndeed, Weبَلَوْنَـٰهُمْbalawnāhumhave tried themكَمَاkamāasبَلَوْنَآbalawnāWe triedأَصْحَـٰبَaṣḥāba(the) companionsٱلْجَنَّةِl-janati(of) the gardenإِذْidhwhenأَقْسَمُوا۟aqsamūthey sworeلَيَصْرِمُنَّهَاlayaṣrimunnahāto pluck its fruitمُصْبِحِينَmuṣ'biḥīna(in the) morning
Indeed, We have tried them as We tried the companions of the garden, when they swore to cut its fruit in the [early] morning

18
وَلَا يَسْتَثْنُونَ
وَلَاwalāAnd notيَسْتَثْنُونَyastathnūnamaking exception
Without making exception
⤳ Link
68:18
19
فَطَافَ عَلَيْهَا طَآئِفٌۭ مِّن رَّبِّكَ وَهُمْ نَآئِمُونَ
فَطَافَfaṭāfaSo there cameعَلَيْهَاʿalayhāupon itطَآئِفٌۭṭāifuna visitationمِّنminfromرَّبِّكَrabbikayour Lordوَهُمْwahumwhile theyنَآئِمُونَnāimūnawere asleep
So there came upon the garden an affliction from your Lord while they were asleep

68:19
20
فَأَصْبَحَتْ كَٱلصَّرِيمِ
فَأَصْبَحَتْfa-aṣbaḥatSo it becameكَٱلصَّرِيمِkal-ṣarīmias if reaped
And it became as though reaped

68:20
21
فَتَنَادَوْا۟ مُصْبِحِينَ
فَتَنَادَوْا۟fatanādawAnd they called one anotherمُصْبِحِينَmuṣ'biḥīna(at) morning
And they called one another at morning
⤳ Link
68:21
22
أَنِ ٱغْدُوا۟ عَلَىٰ حَرْثِكُمْ إِن كُنتُمْ صَـٰرِمِينَ
أَنِaniThatٱغْدُوا۟igh'dūGo earlyعَلَىٰʿalātoحَرْثِكُمْḥarthikumyour cropإِنinifكُنتُمْkuntumyou wouldصَـٰرِمِينَṣārimīnapluck (the) fruit
[Saying], "Go early to your crop if you would cut the fruit

68:22
23
فَٱنطَلَقُوا۟ وَهُمْ يَتَخَـٰفَتُونَ
فَٱنطَلَقُوا۟fa-inṭalaqūSo they wentوَهُمْwahumwhile theyيَتَخَـٰفَتُونَyatakhāfatūnalowered (their) voices
So they set out, while lowering their voices

68:23
24
أَن لَّا يَدْخُلَنَّهَا ٱلْيَوْمَ عَلَيْكُم مِّسْكِينٌۭ
أَنanThatلَّاlāNotيَدْخُلَنَّهَاyadkhulannahāwill enter itٱلْيَوْمَl-yawmatodayعَلَيْكُمʿalaykumupon youمِّسْكِينٌۭmis'kīnunany poor person
[Saying], "There will surely not enter it today upon you [any] poor person

68:24
25
وَغَدَوْا۟ عَلَىٰ حَرْدٍۢ قَـٰدِرِينَ
وَغَدَوْا۟waghadawAnd they went earlyعَلَىٰʿalāwithحَرْدٍۢḥardindeterminationقَـٰدِرِينَqādirīnaable
And they went early in determination, [assuming themselves] able

68:25
26
فَلَمَّا رَأَوْهَا قَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّا لَضَآلُّونَ
فَلَمَّاfalammāBut whenرَأَوْهَاra-awhāthey saw itقَالُوٓا۟qālūthey saidإِنَّاinnāIndeed, weلَضَآلُّونَlaḍāllūna(are) surely lost
But when they saw it, they said, "Indeed, we are lost

68:26
27
بَلْ نَحْنُ مَحْرُومُونَ
بَلْbalNayنَحْنُnaḥnuWeمَحْرُومُونَmaḥrūmūna(are) deprived
Rather, we have been deprived

68:27
28
قَالَ أَوْسَطُهُمْ أَلَمْ أَقُل لَّكُمْ لَوْلَا تُسَبِّحُونَ
قَالَqālaSaidأَوْسَطُهُمْawsaṭuhum(the) most moderate of themأَلَمْalamDid notأَقُلaqulI tellلَّكُمْlakumyouلَوْلَاlawlā'Why notتُسَبِّحُونَtusabbiḥūnayou glorify (Allah)?'
The most moderate of them said, "Did I not say to you, 'Why do you not exalt [Allah]

29
قَالُوا۟ سُبْحَـٰنَ رَبِّنَآ إِنَّا كُنَّا ظَـٰلِمِينَ
قَالُوا۟qālūThey saidسُبْحَـٰنَsub'ḥānaGlory beرَبِّنَآrabbinā(to) our LordإِنَّاinnāIndeed, weكُنَّاkunnā[we] wereظَـٰلِمِينَẓālimīnawrongdoers
They said, "Exalted is our Lord! Indeed, we were wrongdoers

68:29
30
فَأَقْبَلَ بَعْضُهُمْ عَلَىٰ بَعْضٍۢ يَتَلَـٰوَمُونَ
فَأَقْبَلَfa-aqbalaThen approachedبَعْضُهُمْbaʿḍuhumsome of themعَلَىٰʿalātoبَعْضٍۢbaʿḍinothersيَتَلَـٰوَمُونَyatalāwamūnablaming each other
Then they approached one another, blaming each other

68:30
31
قَالُوا۟ يَـٰوَيْلَنَآ إِنَّا كُنَّا طَـٰغِينَ
قَالُوا۟qālūThey saidيَـٰوَيْلَنَآyāwaylanāO woe to usإِنَّاinnāIndeed, weكُنَّاkunnā[we] wereطَـٰغِينَṭāghīnatransgressors
They said, "O woe to us; indeed we were transgressors

68:31
32
عَسَىٰ رَبُّنَآ أَن يُبْدِلَنَا خَيْرًۭا مِّنْهَآ إِنَّآ إِلَىٰ رَبِّنَا رَٰغِبُونَ
عَسَىٰʿasāPerhapsرَبُّنَآrabbunāour Lordأَنan[that]يُبْدِلَنَاyub'dilanāwill substitute for usخَيْرًۭاkhayrana betterمِّنْهَآmin'hāthan itإِنَّآinnāIndeed, weإِلَىٰilātoرَبِّنَاrabbināour Lordرَٰغِبُونَrāghibūnaturn devoutly
Perhaps our Lord will substitute for us [one] better than it. Indeed, we are toward our Lord desirous

68:32
33
كَذَٰلِكَ ٱلْعَذَابُ ۖ وَلَعَذَابُ ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ أَكْبَرُ ۚ لَوْ كَانُوا۟ يَعْلَمُونَ
كَذَٰلِكَkadhālikaSuchٱلْعَذَابُ ۖl-ʿadhābu(is) the punishmentوَلَعَذَابُwalaʿadhābuAnd surely the punishmentٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِl-ākhirati(of) the Hereafterأَكْبَرُ ۚakbaru(is) greaterلَوْlawifكَانُوا۟kānūtheyيَعْلَمُونَyaʿlamūnaknow
Such is the punishment [of this world]. And the punishment of the Hereafter is greater, if they only knew

68:33
34
إِنَّ لِلْمُتَّقِينَ عِندَ رَبِّهِمْ جَنَّـٰتِ ٱلنَّعِيمِ
إِنَّinnaIndeedلِلْمُتَّقِينَlil'muttaqīnafor the righteousعِندَʿindawithرَبِّهِمْrabbihimtheir Lordجَنَّـٰتِjannāti(are) Gardensٱلنَّعِيمِl-naʿīmi(of) Delight
Indeed, for the righteous with their Lord are the Gardens of Pleasure

68:34
35
أَفَنَجْعَلُ ٱلْمُسْلِمِينَ كَٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ
أَفَنَجْعَلُafanajʿaluThen will We treatٱلْمُسْلِمِينَl-mus'limīnathe Muslimsكَٱلْمُجْرِمِينَkal-muj'rimīnalike the criminals
Then will We treat the Muslims like the criminals

68:35
36
مَا لَكُمْ كَيْفَ تَحْكُمُونَ
مَاmāWhatلَكُمْlakum(is) for youكَيْفَkayfaHowتَحْكُمُونَtaḥkumūna(do) you judge
What is [the matter] with you? How do you judge
⤳ Link
68:36
37
أَمْ لَكُمْ كِتَـٰبٌۭ فِيهِ تَدْرُسُونَ
أَمْamOrلَكُمْlakum(is) for youكِتَـٰبٌۭkitābuna bookفِيهِfīhiwhereinتَدْرُسُونَtadrusūnayou learn
Or do you have a scripture in which you learn
⤳ Link
68:37
38
إِنَّ لَكُمْ فِيهِ لَمَا تَخَيَّرُونَ
إِنَّinnaIndeedلَكُمْlakumfor youفِيهِfīhiin itلَمَاlamāwhatتَخَيَّرُونَtakhayyarūnayou choose
That indeed for you is whatever you choose

68:38
39
أَمْ لَكُمْ أَيْمَـٰنٌ عَلَيْنَا بَـٰلِغَةٌ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ ۙ إِنَّ لَكُمْ لَمَا تَحْكُمُونَ
أَمْamOrلَكُمْlakumfor youأَيْمَـٰنٌaymānunoathsعَلَيْنَاʿalaynāfrom usبَـٰلِغَةٌbālighatunreachingإِلَىٰilātoيَوْمِyawmi(the) Dayٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ ۙl-qiyāmati(of) the Resurrectionإِنَّinnaindeedلَكُمْlakumfor youلَمَاlamā(is) whatتَحْكُمُونَtaḥkumūnayou judge
Or do you have oaths [binding] upon Us, extending until the Day of Resurrection, that indeed for you is whatever you judge

68:39
40
سَلْهُمْ أَيُّهُم بِذَٰلِكَ زَعِيمٌ
سَلْهُمْsalhumAsk themأَيُّهُمayyuhumwhich of themبِذَٰلِكَbidhālikafor thatزَعِيمٌzaʿīmun(is) responsible
Ask them which of them, for that [claim], is responsible
⤳ Link
68:40
41
أَمْ لَهُمْ شُرَكَآءُ فَلْيَأْتُوا۟ بِشُرَكَآئِهِمْ إِن كَانُوا۟ صَـٰدِقِينَ
أَمْamOrلَهُمْlahum(are) for themشُرَكَآءُshurakāupartnersفَلْيَأْتُوا۟falyatūThen let them bringبِشُرَكَآئِهِمْbishurakāihimtheir partnersإِنinifكَانُوا۟kānūthey areصَـٰدِقِينَṣādiqīnatruthful
Or do they have partners? Then let them bring their partners, if they should be truthful

68:41
42
يَوْمَ يُكْشَفُ عَن سَاقٍۢ وَيُدْعَوْنَ إِلَى ٱلسُّجُودِ فَلَا يَسْتَطِيعُونَ
يَوْمَyawma(The) Dayيُكْشَفُyuk'shafuwill be uncoveredعَنʿanfromسَاقٍۢsāqinthe shinوَيُدْعَوْنَwayud'ʿawnaand they will be calledإِلَىilātoٱلسُّجُودِl-sujūdiprostrateفَلَاfalābut notيَسْتَطِيعُونَyastaṭīʿūnathey will be able
The Day the shin will be uncovered and they are invited to prostration but the disbelievers will not be able

68:42
43
خَـٰشِعَةً أَبْصَـٰرُهُمْ تَرْهَقُهُمْ ذِلَّةٌۭ ۖ وَقَدْ كَانُوا۟ يُدْعَوْنَ إِلَى ٱلسُّجُودِ وَهُمْ سَـٰلِمُونَ
خَـٰشِعَةًkhāshiʿatanHumbledأَبْصَـٰرُهُمْabṣāruhumtheir eyesتَرْهَقُهُمْtarhaquhumwill cover themذِلَّةٌۭ ۖdhillatunhumiliationوَقَدْwaqadAnd indeedكَانُوا۟kānūthey wereيُدْعَوْنَyud'ʿawnacalledإِلَىilātoٱلسُّجُودِl-sujūdiprostrateوَهُمْwahumwhile theyسَـٰلِمُونَsālimūna(were) sound
Their eyes humbled, humiliation will cover them. And they used to be invited to prostration while they were sound

68:43
44
فَذَرْنِى وَمَن يُكَذِّبُ بِهَـٰذَا ٱلْحَدِيثِ ۖ سَنَسْتَدْرِجُهُم مِّنْ حَيْثُ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ
فَذَرْنِىfadharnīSo leave Meوَمَنwamanand whoeverيُكَذِّبُyukadhibudeniesبِهَـٰذَاbihādhāthisٱلْحَدِيثِ ۖl-ḥadīthiStatementسَنَسْتَدْرِجُهُمsanastadrijuhumWe will progressively lead themمِّنْminfromحَيْثُḥaythuwhereلَاlānotيَعْلَمُونَyaʿlamūnathey know
So leave Me, [O Muhammad], with [the matter of] whoever denies the Qur'an. We will progressively lead them [to punishment] from where they do not know

68:44
45
وَأُمْلِى لَهُمْ ۚ إِنَّ كَيْدِى مَتِينٌ
وَأُمْلِىwa-um'līAnd I will give respiteلَهُمْ ۚlahumto themإِنَّinnaIndeedكَيْدِىkaydīMy planمَتِينٌmatīnun(is) firm
And I will give them time. Indeed, My plan is firm

68:45
46
أَمْ تَسْـَٔلُهُمْ أَجْرًۭا فَهُم مِّن مَّغْرَمٍۢ مُّثْقَلُونَ
أَمْamOrتَسْـَٔلُهُمْtasaluhumyou ask themأَجْرًۭاajrana paymentفَهُمfahumso theyمِّنminfromمَّغْرَمٍۢmaghramin(the) debtمُّثْقَلُونَmuth'qalūna(are) burdened
Or do you ask of them a payment, so they are by debt burdened down

68:46
47
أَمْ عِندَهُمُ ٱلْغَيْبُ فَهُمْ يَكْتُبُونَ
أَمْamOrعِندَهُمُʿindahumu(is) with themٱلْغَيْبُl-ghaybuthe unseenفَهُمْfahumso theyيَكْتُبُونَyaktubūnawrite it
Or have they [knowledge of] the unseen, so they write [it] down
⤳ Link
68:47
48
فَٱصْبِرْ لِحُكْمِ رَبِّكَ وَلَا تَكُن كَصَاحِبِ ٱلْحُوتِ إِذْ نَادَىٰ وَهُوَ مَكْظُومٌۭ
فَٱصْبِرْfa-iṣ'birSo be patientلِحُكْمِliḥuk'mifor (the) decisionرَبِّكَrabbika(of) your Lordوَلَاwalāand (do) notتَكُنtakunbeكَصَاحِبِkaṣāḥibilike (the) companionٱلْحُوتِl-ḥūti(of) the fishإِذْidhwhenنَادَىٰnādāhe called outوَهُوَwahuwawhile heمَكْظُومٌۭmakẓūmun(was) distressed
Then be patient for the decision of your Lord, [O Muhammad], and be not like the companion of the fish when he called out while he was distressed

68:48
49
لَّوْلَآ أَن تَدَٰرَكَهُۥ نِعْمَةٌۭ مِّن رَّبِّهِۦ لَنُبِذَ بِٱلْعَرَآءِ وَهُوَ مَذْمُومٌۭ
لَّوْلَآlawlāIf notأَنanthatتَدَٰرَكَهُۥtadārakahuovertook himنِعْمَةٌۭniʿ'matuna Favorمِّنminfromرَّبِّهِۦrabbihihis Lordلَنُبِذَlanubidhasurely he would have been thrownبِٱلْعَرَآءِbil-ʿarāionto (the) naked shoreوَهُوَwahuwawhile heمَذْمُومٌۭmadhmūmun(was) blamed
If not that a favor from his Lord overtook him, he would have been thrown onto the naked shore while he was censured

68:49
50
فَٱجْتَبَـٰهُ رَبُّهُۥ فَجَعَلَهُۥ مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰلِحِينَ
فَٱجْتَبَـٰهُfa-ij'tabāhuBut chose himرَبُّهُۥrabbuhuhis Lordفَجَعَلَهُۥfajaʿalahuand made himمِنَminaofٱلصَّـٰلِحِينَl-ṣāliḥīnathe righteous
And his Lord chose him and made him of the righteous

68:50
51
وَإِن يَكَادُ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ لَيُزْلِقُونَكَ بِأَبْصَـٰرِهِمْ لَمَّا سَمِعُوا۟ ٱلذِّكْرَ وَيَقُولُونَ إِنَّهُۥ لَمَجْنُونٌۭ
وَإِنwa-inAnd indeedيَكَادُyakāduwould almostٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose whoكَفَرُوا۟kafarūdisbelieveلَيُزْلِقُونَكَlayuz'liqūnakasurely make you slipبِأَبْصَـٰرِهِمْbi-abṣārihimwith their lookلَمَّاlammāwhenسَمِعُوا۟samiʿūthey hearٱلذِّكْرَl-dhik'rathe Messageوَيَقُولُونَwayaqūlūnaand they sayإِنَّهُۥinnahuIndeed, heلَمَجْنُونٌۭlamajnūnun(is) surely mad
And indeed, those who disbelieve would almost make you slip with their eyes when they hear the message, and they say, "Indeed, he is mad

52
وَمَا هُوَ إِلَّا ذِكْرٌۭ لِّلْعَـٰلَمِينَ
وَمَاwamāAnd notهُوَhuwait (is)إِلَّاillābutذِكْرٌۭdhik'runa Reminderلِّلْعَـٰلَمِينَlil'ʿālamīnato the worlds
But it is not except a reminder to the worlds
