Surah 69 of 114 · Makki
سُورَةُ الحَاقَّةِ
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

مَا ٱلْحَآقَّةُ
مَاmāWhatٱلْحَآقَّةُl-ḥāqatu(is) the Inevitable Reality
What is the Inevitable Reality

69:2
3
وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا ٱلْحَآقَّةُ
وَمَآwamāAnd whatأَدْرَىٰكَadrākawill make you knowمَاmāwhatٱلْحَآقَّةُl-ḥāqatu(is) the Inevitable Reality
And what can make you know what is the Inevitable Reality

4
كَذَّبَتْ ثَمُودُ وَعَادٌۢ بِٱلْقَارِعَةِ
كَذَّبَتْkadhabatDeniedثَمُودُthamūduThamudوَعَادٌۢwaʿādunand Aadبِٱلْقَارِعَةِbil-qāriʿatithe Striking Calamity
Thamud and 'Aad denied the Striking Calamity

69:4
5
فَأَمَّا ثَمُودُ فَأُهْلِكُوا۟ بِٱلطَّاغِيَةِ
فَأَمَّاfa-ammāSo as forثَمُودُthamūduThamudفَأُهْلِكُوا۟fa-uh'likūthey were destroyedبِٱلطَّاغِيَةِbil-ṭāghiyatiby the overpowering (blast)
So as for Thamud, they were destroyed by the overpowering [blast]

69:5
6
وَأَمَّا عَادٌۭ فَأُهْلِكُوا۟ بِرِيحٍۢ صَرْصَرٍ عَاتِيَةٍۢ
وَأَمَّاwa-ammāAnd as forعَادٌۭʿādunAadفَأُهْلِكُوا۟fa-uh'likūthey were destroyedبِرِيحٍۢbirīḥinby a windصَرْصَرٍṣarṣarinscreamingعَاتِيَةٍۢʿātiyatinviolent
And as for 'Aad, they were destroyed by a screaming, violent wind

7
سَخَّرَهَا عَلَيْهِمْ سَبْعَ لَيَالٍۢ وَثَمَـٰنِيَةَ أَيَّامٍ حُسُومًۭا فَتَرَى ٱلْقَوْمَ فِيهَا صَرْعَىٰ كَأَنَّهُمْ أَعْجَازُ نَخْلٍ خَاوِيَةٍۢ
سَخَّرَهَاsakharahāWhich He imposedعَلَيْهِمْʿalayhimupon themسَبْعَsabʿa(for) sevenلَيَالٍۢlayālinnightsوَثَمَـٰنِيَةَwathamāniyataand eightأَيَّامٍayyāmindaysحُسُومًۭاḥusūman(in) successionفَتَرَىfatarāso you would seeٱلْقَوْمَl-qawmathe peopleفِيهَاfīhāthereinصَرْعَىٰṣarʿāfallenكَأَنَّهُمْka-annahumas if they wereأَعْجَازُaʿjāzutrunksنَخْلٍnakhlin(of) date-palmsخَاوِيَةٍۢkhāwiyatinhollow
Which Allah imposed upon them for seven nights and eight days in succession, so you would see the people therein fallen as if they were hollow trunks of palm trees

8
فَهَلْ تَرَىٰ لَهُم مِّنۢ بَاقِيَةٍۢ
فَهَلْfahalThen doتَرَىٰtarāyou seeلَهُمlahumof themمِّنۢminanyبَاقِيَةٍۢbāqiyatinremains
Then do you see of them any remains

69:8
9
وَجَآءَ فِرْعَوْنُ وَمَن قَبْلَهُۥ وَٱلْمُؤْتَفِكَـٰتُ بِٱلْخَاطِئَةِ
وَجَآءَwajāaAnd cameفِرْعَوْنُfir'ʿawnuFiraunوَمَنwamanand (those)قَبْلَهُۥqablahubefore himوَٱلْمُؤْتَفِكَـٰتُwal-mu'tafikātuand the overturned citiesبِٱلْخَاطِئَةِbil-khāṭi-atiwith sin
And there came Pharaoh and those before him and the overturned cities with sin

69:9
10
فَعَصَوْا۟ رَسُولَ رَبِّهِمْ فَأَخَذَهُمْ أَخْذَةًۭ رَّابِيَةً
فَعَصَوْا۟faʿaṣawAnd they disobeyedرَسُولَrasūla(the) Messengerرَبِّهِمْrabbihim(of) their Lordفَأَخَذَهُمْfa-akhadhahumso He seized themأَخْذَةًۭakhdhatan(with) a seizureرَّابِيَةًrābiyatanexceeding
And they disobeyed the messenger of their Lord, so He seized them with a seizure exceeding [in severity]

11
إِنَّا لَمَّا طَغَا ٱلْمَآءُ حَمَلْنَـٰكُمْ فِى ٱلْجَارِيَةِ
إِنَّاinnāIndeed, Weلَمَّاlammāwhenطَغَاṭaghāoverflowedٱلْمَآءُl-māuthe waterحَمَلْنَـٰكُمْḥamalnākumWe carried youفِىfīinٱلْجَارِيَةِl-jāriyatithe sailing (ship)
Indeed, when the water overflowed, We carried your ancestors in the sailing ship

12
لِنَجْعَلَهَا لَكُمْ تَذْكِرَةًۭ وَتَعِيَهَآ أُذُنٌۭ وَٰعِيَةٌۭ
لِنَجْعَلَهَاlinajʿalahāThat We might make itلَكُمْlakumfor youتَذْكِرَةًۭtadhkiratana reminderوَتَعِيَهَآwataʿiyahāand would be conscious of itأُذُنٌۭudhununan earوَٰعِيَةٌۭwāʿiyatunconscious
That We might make it for you a reminder and [that] a conscious ear would be conscious of it

13
فَإِذَا نُفِخَ فِى ٱلصُّورِ نَفْخَةٌۭ وَٰحِدَةٌۭ
فَإِذَاfa-idhāThen whenنُفِخَnufikhais blownفِىfīinٱلصُّورِl-ṣūrithe trumpet نَفْخَةٌۭnafkhatuna blastوَٰحِدَةٌۭwāḥidatunsingle
Then when the Horn is blown with one blast

14
وَحُمِلَتِ ٱلْأَرْضُ وَٱلْجِبَالُ فَدُكَّتَا دَكَّةًۭ وَٰحِدَةًۭ
وَحُمِلَتِwaḥumilatiAnd are liftedٱلْأَرْضُl-arḍuthe earthوَٱلْجِبَالُwal-jibāluand the mountainsفَدُكَّتَاfadukkatāand crushedدَكَّةًۭdakkatan(with) a crushingوَٰحِدَةًۭwāḥidatansingle
And the earth and the mountains are lifted and leveled with one blow

69:14
15
فَيَوْمَئِذٍۢ وَقَعَتِ ٱلْوَاقِعَةُ
فَيَوْمَئِذٍۢfayawma-idhinThen (on) that Dayوَقَعَتِwaqaʿatiwill occurٱلْوَاقِعَةُl-wāqiʿatuthe Occurrence
Then on that Day, the Resurrection will occur

16
وَٱنشَقَّتِ ٱلسَّمَآءُ فَهِىَ يَوْمَئِذٍۢ وَاهِيَةٌۭ
وَٱنشَقَّتِwa-inshaqqatiAnd will splitٱلسَّمَآءُl-samāuthe heavenفَهِىَfahiyaso itيَوْمَئِذٍۢyawma-idhin(is on) that Dayوَاهِيَةٌۭwāhiyatunfrail
And the heaven will split [open], for that Day it is infirm

69:16
17
وَٱلْمَلَكُ عَلَىٰٓ أَرْجَآئِهَا ۚ وَيَحْمِلُ عَرْشَ رَبِّكَ فَوْقَهُمْ يَوْمَئِذٍۢ ثَمَـٰنِيَةٌۭ
وَٱلْمَلَكُwal-malakuAnd the Angelsعَلَىٰٓʿalā(will be) onأَرْجَآئِهَا ۚarjāihāits edgesوَيَحْمِلُwayaḥmiluand will bearعَرْشَʿarsha(the) Throneرَبِّكَrabbika(of) your Lordفَوْقَهُمْfawqahumabove themيَوْمَئِذٍۢyawma-idhinthat Dayثَمَـٰنِيَةٌۭthamāniyatuneight
And the angels are at its edges. And there will bear the Throne of your Lord above them, that Day, eight [of them]

69:17
18
يَوْمَئِذٍۢ تُعْرَضُونَ لَا تَخْفَىٰ مِنكُمْ خَافِيَةٌۭ
يَوْمَئِذٍۢyawma-idhinThat Dayتُعْرَضُونَtuʿ'raḍūnayou will be exhibitedلَاlānotتَخْفَىٰtakhfāwill be hiddenمِنكُمْminkumamong youخَافِيَةٌۭkhāfiyatunany secret
That Day, you will be exhibited [for judgement]; not hidden among you is anything concealed

69:18
19
فَأَمَّا مَنْ أُوتِىَ كِتَـٰبَهُۥ بِيَمِينِهِۦ فَيَقُولُ هَآؤُمُ ٱقْرَءُوا۟ كِتَـٰبِيَهْ
فَأَمَّاfa-ammāThen as forمَنْman(him) whoأُوتِىَūtiyais givenكِتَـٰبَهُۥkitābahuhis recordبِيَمِينِهِۦbiyamīnihiin his right handفَيَقُولُfayaqūluwill sayهَآؤُمُhāumuHereٱقْرَءُوا۟iq'raūreadكِتَـٰبِيَهْkitābiyahmy record
So as for he who is given his record in his right hand, he will say, "Here, read my record

20
إِنِّى ظَنَنتُ أَنِّى مُلَـٰقٍ حِسَابِيَهْ
إِنِّىinnīIndeed, Iظَنَنتُẓanantuwas certainأَنِّىannīthat Iمُلَـٰقٍmulāqin(will) meetحِسَابِيَهْḥisābiyahmy account
Indeed, I was certain that I would be meeting my account

69:20
21
فَهُوَ فِى عِيشَةٍۢ رَّاضِيَةٍۢ
فَهُوَfahuwaSo heفِىfī(will be) inعِيشَةٍۢʿīshatina lifeرَّاضِيَةٍۢrāḍiyatinpleasant
So he will be in a pleasant life

22
فِى جَنَّةٍ عَالِيَةٍۢ
فِىfīInجَنَّةٍjannatina Gardenعَالِيَةٍۢʿāliyatinelevated
In an elevated garden

69:22
23
قُطُوفُهَا دَانِيَةٌۭ
قُطُوفُهَاquṭūfuhāIts clusters of fruitsدَانِيَةٌۭdāniyatunhanging near
Its [fruit] to be picked hanging near

69:23
24
كُلُوا۟ وَٱشْرَبُوا۟ هَنِيٓـًٔۢا بِمَآ أَسْلَفْتُمْ فِى ٱلْأَيَّامِ ٱلْخَالِيَةِ
كُلُوا۟kulūEatوَٱشْرَبُوا۟wa-ish'rabūand drinkهَنِيٓـًٔۢاhanīan(in) satisfactionبِمَآbimāfor whatأَسْلَفْتُمْaslaftumyou sent before youفِىfīinٱلْأَيَّامِl-ayāmithe daysٱلْخَالِيَةِl-khāliyatipast
[They will be told], "Eat and drink in satisfaction for what you put forth in the days past

69:24
25
وَأَمَّا مَنْ أُوتِىَ كِتَـٰبَهُۥ بِشِمَالِهِۦ فَيَقُولُ يَـٰلَيْتَنِى لَمْ أُوتَ كِتَـٰبِيَهْ
وَأَمَّاwa-ammāBut as forمَنْman(him) whoأُوتِىَūtiyais givenكِتَـٰبَهُۥkitābahuhis recordبِشِمَالِهِۦbishimālihiin his left handفَيَقُولُfayaqūluwill sayيَـٰلَيْتَنِىyālaytanīO! I wishلَمْlamnotأُوتَūtaI had been givenكِتَـٰبِيَهْkitābiyahmy record
But as for he who is given his record in his left hand, he will say, "Oh, I wish I had not been given my record

69:25
26
وَلَمْ أَدْرِ مَا حِسَابِيَهْ
وَلَمْwalamAnd notأَدْرِadriI had knownمَاmāwhatحِسَابِيَهْḥisābiyah(is) my account
And had not known what is my account

69:26
27
يَـٰلَيْتَهَا كَانَتِ ٱلْقَاضِيَةَ
يَـٰلَيْتَهَاyālaytahāO! I wish itكَانَتِkānatihad beenٱلْقَاضِيَةَl-qāḍiyatathe end
I wish my death had been the decisive one

69:27
28
مَآ أَغْنَىٰ عَنِّى مَالِيَهْ ۜ
مَآmāNotأَغْنَىٰaghnāhas availedعَنِّىʿannīmeمَالِيَهْ ۜmāliyahmy wealth
My wealth has not availed me

69:28
29
هَلَكَ عَنِّى سُلْطَـٰنِيَهْ
هَلَكَhalakaIs goneعَنِّىʿannīfrom meسُلْطَـٰنِيَهْsul'ṭāniyahmy authority
Gone from me is my authority

69:29
30
خُذُوهُ فَغُلُّوهُ
خُذُوهُkhudhūhuSeize himفَغُلُّوهُfaghullūhuand shackle him
[Allah will say], "Seize him and shackle him

69:30
31
ثُمَّ ٱلْجَحِيمَ صَلُّوهُ
ثُمَّthummaThenٱلْجَحِيمَl-jaḥīma(into) the Hellfireصَلُّوهُṣallūhuburn him
Then into Hellfire drive him

69:31
32
ثُمَّ فِى سِلْسِلَةٍۢ ذَرْعُهَا سَبْعُونَ ذِرَاعًۭا فَٱسْلُكُوهُ
ثُمَّthummaThenفِىfīintoسِلْسِلَةٍۢsil'silatina chainذَرْعُهَاdharʿuhāits lengthسَبْعُونَsabʿūna(is) seventyذِرَاعًۭاdhirāʿancubitsفَٱسْلُكُوهُfa-us'lukūhuinsert him
Then into a chain whose length is seventy cubits insert him

69:32
33
إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ لَا يُؤْمِنُ بِٱللَّهِ ٱلْعَظِيمِ
إِنَّهُۥinnahuIndeed, heكَانَkānawasلَاlānotيُؤْمِنُyu'minubelievingبِٱللَّهِbil-lahiin Allahٱلْعَظِيمِl-ʿaẓīmithe Most Great
Indeed, he did not used to believe in Allah, the Most Great

69:33
34
وَلَا يَحُضُّ عَلَىٰ طَعَامِ ٱلْمِسْكِينِ
وَلَاwalāAnd (did) notيَحُضُّyaḥuḍḍufeel the urgeعَلَىٰʿalāonطَعَامِṭaʿāmi(the) feedingٱلْمِسْكِينِl-mis'kīni(of) the poor
Nor did he encourage the feeding of the poor

69:34
35
فَلَيْسَ لَهُ ٱلْيَوْمَ هَـٰهُنَا حَمِيمٌۭ
فَلَيْسَfalaysaSo notلَهُlahufor himٱلْيَوْمَl-yawmatodayهَـٰهُنَاhāhunāhereحَمِيمٌۭḥamīmunany devoted friend
So there is not for him here this Day any devoted friend

69:35
36
وَلَا طَعَامٌ إِلَّا مِنْ غِسْلِينٍۢ
وَلَاwalāAnd notطَعَامٌṭaʿāmunany foodإِلَّاillāexceptمِنْminfromغِسْلِينٍۢghis'līnin(the) discharge of wounds
Nor any food except from the discharge of wounds

69:36
37
لَّا يَأْكُلُهُۥٓ إِلَّا ٱلْخَـٰطِـُٔونَ
لَّاlāNotيَأْكُلُهُۥٓyakuluhuwill eat itإِلَّاillāexceptٱلْخَـٰطِـُٔونَl-khāṭiūnathe sinners
None will eat it except the sinners

38
فَلَآ أُقْسِمُ بِمَا تُبْصِرُونَ
فَلَآfalāBut nayأُقْسِمُuq'simuI swearبِمَاbimāby whatتُبْصِرُونَtub'ṣirūnayou see
So I swear by what you see

69:38
39
وَمَا لَا تُبْصِرُونَ
وَمَاwamāAnd whatلَاlānotتُبْصِرُونَtub'ṣirūnayou see
And what you do not see

69:39
40
إِنَّهُۥ لَقَوْلُ رَسُولٍۢ كَرِيمٍۢ
إِنَّهُۥinnahuIndeed, it (is)لَقَوْلُlaqawlusurely (the) Wordرَسُولٍۢrasūlin(of) a Messengerكَرِيمٍۢkarīminnoble
[That] indeed, the Qur'an is the word of a noble Messenger

69:40
41
وَمَا هُوَ بِقَوْلِ شَاعِرٍۢ ۚ قَلِيلًۭا مَّا تُؤْمِنُونَ
وَمَاwamāAnd notهُوَhuwaitبِقَوْلِbiqawli(is the) wordشَاعِرٍۢ ۚshāʿirin(of) a poetقَلِيلًۭاqalīlanlittleمَّاmā(is) whatتُؤْمِنُونَtu'minūnayou believe
And it is not the word of a poet; little do you believe

69:41
42
وَلَا بِقَوْلِ كَاهِنٍۢ ۚ قَلِيلًۭا مَّا تَذَكَّرُونَ
وَلَاwalāAnd notبِقَوْلِbiqawli(it is the) wordكَاهِنٍۢ ۚkāhinin(of) a soothsayerقَلِيلًۭاqalīlanlittleمَّاmā(is) whatتَذَكَّرُونَtadhakkarūnayou take heed
Nor the word of a soothsayer; little do you remember

69:42
43
تَنزِيلٌۭ مِّن رَّبِّ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ
تَنزِيلٌۭtanzīlun(It is) a revelationمِّنminfromرَّبِّrabbi(the) Lordٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَl-ʿālamīna(of) the worlds
[It is] a revelation from the Lord of the worlds

69:43
44
وَلَوْ تَقَوَّلَ عَلَيْنَا بَعْضَ ٱلْأَقَاوِيلِ
وَلَوْwalawAnd ifتَقَوَّلَtaqawwalahe (had) fabricatedعَلَيْنَاʿalaynāagainst Usبَعْضَbaʿḍasomeٱلْأَقَاوِيلِl-aqāwīlisayings
And if Muhammad had made up about Us some [false] sayings

69:44
45
لَأَخَذْنَا مِنْهُ بِٱلْيَمِينِ
لَأَخَذْنَاla-akhadhnāCertainly We (would) have seizedمِنْهُmin'huhimبِٱلْيَمِينِbil-yamīniby the right hand
We would have seized him by the right hand

69:45
46
ثُمَّ لَقَطَعْنَا مِنْهُ ٱلْوَتِينَ
ثُمَّthummaThenلَقَطَعْنَاlaqaṭaʿnācertainly We (would) have cut offمِنْهُmin'hufrom himٱلْوَتِينَl-watīnathe aorta
Then We would have cut from him the aorta

69:46
47
فَمَا مِنكُم مِّنْ أَحَدٍ عَنْهُ حَـٰجِزِينَ
فَمَاfamāAnd notمِنكُمminkumfrom youمِّنْminanyأَحَدٍaḥadinoneعَنْهُʿanhu[from him]حَـٰجِزِينَḥājizīna(who could) prevent (it)
And there is no one of you who could prevent [Us] from him

69:47
48
وَإِنَّهُۥ لَتَذْكِرَةٌۭ لِّلْمُتَّقِينَ
وَإِنَّهُۥwa-innahuAnd indeed, itلَتَذْكِرَةٌۭlatadhkiratun(is) surely a reminderلِّلْمُتَّقِينَlil'muttaqīnafor the Allah-fearing
And indeed, the Qur'an is a reminder for the righteous

69:48
49
وَإِنَّا لَنَعْلَمُ أَنَّ مِنكُم مُّكَذِّبِينَ
وَإِنَّاwa-innāAnd indeed, Weلَنَعْلَمُlanaʿlamusurely knowأَنَّannathatمِنكُمminkumamong youمُّكَذِّبِينَmukadhibīna(are) deniers
And indeed, We know that among you are deniers

69:49
50
وَإِنَّهُۥ لَحَسْرَةٌ عَلَى ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ
وَإِنَّهُۥwa-innahuAnd indeed, itلَحَسْرَةٌlaḥasratun(is) surely a regretعَلَىʿalāuponٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَl-kāfirīnathe disbelievers
And indeed, it will be [a cause of] regret upon the disbelievers

69:50
51
وَإِنَّهُۥ لَحَقُّ ٱلْيَقِينِ
وَإِنَّهُۥwa-innahuAnd indeed, it (is)لَحَقُّlaḥaqqusurely (the) truthٱلْيَقِينِl-yaqīni(of) certainty
And indeed, it is the truth of certainty

52
فَسَبِّحْ بِٱسْمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلْعَظِيمِ
فَسَبِّحْfasabbiḥSo glorifyبِٱسْمِbi-is'mi(the) nameرَبِّكَrabbika(of) your Lordٱلْعَظِيمِl-ʿaẓīmithe Most Great
So exalt the name of your Lord, the Most Great
