The route of Hajj
The three types of Hajj
You choose the type when you enter ihram at the miqat. The difference is whether, and how, you join Umrah to your Hajj.
| Type | What you do | Talbiyah at the miqat | Sacrifice |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tamattu' Umrah, then Hajj | Perform Umrah in the months of Hajj, leave ihram, then enter ihram again on the 8th for Hajj. | Labbayka 'umratan | Required (Qur'an 2:196) |
| Qiran Umrah and Hajj joined | Enter ihram for both at once and stay in ihram until the 10th. One tawaf and one sa'i count for both in most schools. | Labbayka 'umratan wa hajjan | Required |
| Ifrad Hajj only | Enter ihram for Hajj only and stay in ihram until the 10th. | Labbayka hajjan | Not required |
'A'ishah said: “Some of us entered ihram for Umrah, some for Hajj and Umrah, and some for Hajj” (Sahih al-Bukhari 1562, Sahih Muslim 1211).
Which is best: Hanbalis prefer tamattu', Hanafis qiran, and Malikis and Shafi'is ifrad. All three are valid by agreement.
The pillars of Hajj
Hajj is a duty once in a lifetime for every adult Muslim who is able to make the journey (Qur'an 3:97, Sahih Muslim 1337). Its pillars, without which it is not valid, are:
- Ihram, the intention to begin Hajj.
- Standing at Arafah on the 9th: “Hajj is Arafah” (Jami' at-Tirmidhi 889).
- Tawaf al-ifadah, from the 10th onwards (Qur'an 22:29).
- Sa'i between Safa and Marwah.
Hanafis count only ihram (as a condition), Arafah and most of tawaf al-ifadah as pillars, and sa'i as a duty. Shafi'is add shaving or shortening as a pillar.
Other duties, such as entering ihram at the miqat, the night at Muzdalifah, the stoning and the farewell tawaf, are made up with a sacrifice if missed.
Duas for the Day of Arafah
“There is no day on which Allah frees more servants from the Fire than the Day of Arafah” (Sahih Muslim 1348). The standing begins after midday and lasts until sunset. Face the qiblah, raise your hands, and ask for everything you need, in any language. These are the words most associated with the day:
لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ، لَهُ الْمُلْكُ وَلَهُ الْحَمْدُ، وَهُوَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ
La ilaha illallahu wahdahu la sharika lah, lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamdu, wa huwa 'ala kulli shay'in qadir
There is no god but Allah alone, with no partner. His is the dominion and His is the praise, and He has power over all things.
“The best dua is the dua of the Day of Arafah, and the best that I and the prophets before me have said is…” · Jami' at-Tirmidhi 3585
رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الْآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ
Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanatan wa fil-akhirati hasanatan wa qina 'adhaban-nar
Our Lord, give us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.
Between the Yemeni corner and the Black Stone · Sunan Abi Dawud 1892 · Qur'an 2:201
رَبَّنَا ظَلَمْنَا أَنفُسَنَا وَإِن لَّمْ تَغْفِرْ لَنَا وَتَرْحَمْنَا لَنَكُونَنَّ مِنَ الْخَاسِرِينَ
Rabbana zalamna anfusana wa in lam taghfir lana wa tarhamna lanakunanna minal-khasirin
Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves. If You do not forgive us and have mercy on us, we will surely be among the losers.
The dua of Adam and Hawwa · Qur'an 7:23
Ask for forgiveness above all; the master dua of forgiveness and the dua Allahumma innaka 'afuwwun are good to learn by heart. If you are not on Hajj, fast the day: it expiates the sins of the year before and the year after (Sahih Muslim 1162).
From Fajr of the 9th to 'Asr of the 13th, many say this takbir after each prayer and throughout the days:
اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ، اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ، لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ، وَاللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ، اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ، وَلِلَّهِ الْحَمْدُ
Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, la ilaha illallah, wallahu akbar, Allahu akbar, wa lillahil-hamd
Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest. There is no god but Allah. Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, and to Allah belongs all praise.

How this guide works, and its sources
Dates match the site's own Hijri calendar, which uses the Umm al-Qura calendar of Saudi Arabia; the Saudi Supreme Court confirms the start of Dhul-Hijjah by moon sighting. The rites follow the hadith of Jabir on the Prophet's ﷺ Hajj (Sahih Muslim 1218), the Qur'an (2:196-203, 3:97, 22:27-29) and the hadith named beside each point. Where the four Sunni schools differ, the difference is stated in one line. This page does not issue rulings.
Frequently asked questions
When is Hajj 2027?
Hajj 1448 is expected from Friday 14 May 2027 (8 Dhul-Hijjah) to Wednesday 19 May 2027 (13 Dhul-Hijjah), with the Day of Arafah on Saturday 15 May 2027 and Eid al-Adha on Sunday 16 May 2027. These are Umm al-Qura estimates; Saudi Arabia confirms the dates by moon sighting at the start of Dhul-Hijjah, so they can move by a day.
Who has to perform Hajj?
Every adult, sane Muslim who is able, in health, money and a safe journey, must perform Hajj once in their life: “Pilgrimage to the House is a duty owed to Allah by all who can make their way to it” (Qur'an 3:97). Asked if it was every year, the Prophet said once is the duty (Sahih Muslim 1337).
What is the difference between Hajj and Umrah?
Hajj is done only on set days, 8 to 13 Dhul-Hijjah, includes the standing at Arafah, and is a pillar of Islam for those able. Umrah can be done at any time of year, takes a few hours, and is ihram, tawaf, sa'i and shaving or shortening.
Should people not on Hajj fast the Day of Arafah?
Yes, it is a highly recommended fast: it expiates the sins of the year before and the year after (Sahih Muslim 1162). Pilgrims at Arafah do not fast; the Prophet drank milk there in front of the people (Sahih al-Bukhari 1658).
Can I perform Hajj on behalf of someone else?
Yes, for someone who has died or who is too old or ill to travel. A woman asked about her father who could not sit on a mount, and the Prophet told her to perform it for him (Sahih al-Bukhari 1513). Most scholars require you to have done your own Hajj first (Sunan Abi Dawud 1811).
Which type of Hajj should I choose?
All three are valid. Most pilgrims from abroad perform tamattu' because they can leave ihram between Umrah and Hajj. Hanbalis prefer tamattu', Hanafis qiran, and Malikis and Shafi'is ifrad.
