Guide · Hajj 1448 AH
Hajj step by step, day by day
What to do on each day of Hajj, from the 8th of Dhul-Hijjah (Friday 14 May 2027) to the 13th (Wednesday 19 May 2027), in order, with what to say and the source for each act.
8th: ihram and Mina. 9th: Arafah from midday to sunset, then Muzdalifah for the night. 10th: stone Jamrat al-'Aqabah, sacrifice, shave, tawaf al-ifadah and sa'i. 11th to 13th: nights in Mina, stoning all three jamarat each afternoon. Last: the farewell tawaf.
The days of Hajj
Before the 8th: ihram and arrival
Enter ihram at the miqat as described in the Umrah guide, with the talbiyah for your type of Hajj (see the three types).
- Tamattu': perform a full Umrah, shorten your hair, and leave ihram until the 8th.
- Qiran and ifrad: perform the arrival tawaf (tawaf al-qudum). You may do the sa'i of Hajj now, after it. Stay in ihram.
Labbayk Allahumma labbayk, labbayka la sharika laka labbayk. Innal-hamda wan-ni'mata laka wal-mulk, la sharika lak.
Here I am, O Allah, here I am. Here I am, You have no partner, here I am. All praise and blessing are Yours, and the dominion. You have no partner.
Sahih al-Bukhari 1549 · Sahih Muslim 1184
8 Dhul-Hijjah (Fri 14 May): go to Mina
This is Yawm at-Tarwiyah. Tamattu' pilgrims bathe and enter ihram for Hajj from their hotel, saying Labbayka hajjan. Then everyone goes to Mina, about 7 km from the Haram, repeating the talbiyah.
In Mina, pray Dhuhr, 'Asr, Maghrib, 'Isha and the next morning's Fajr, each at its own time; the four-rak'ah prayers are shortened to two, but not joined (Sahih Muslim 1218). Spend the night in Mina.
9 Dhul-Hijjah (Sat 15 May): stand at Arafah
After sunrise, go to Arafah. After midday, listen to the sermon if you can, then pray Dhuhr and 'Asr together at the time of Dhuhr, two rak'ahs each, with one adhan and two iqamahs (Sahih Muslim 1218).
Then stand, sit or rest within the boundaries of Arafah, facing the qiblah, in dua and dhikr until sunset. You do not need to climb the Mount of Mercy (Jabal ar-Rahmah): “I stood here, and all of Arafah is a place of standing” (Sahih Muslim 1218). Check the boundary signs; the valley of 'Uranah is outside Arafah. “Hajj is Arafah” (Jami' at-Tirmidhi 889).
There is no god but Allah alone, with no partner. His is the dominion and His is the praise, and He has power over all things.
“The best dua is the dua of the Day of Arafah, and the best that I and the prophets before me have said is…” · Jami' at-Tirmidhi 3585
More duas for the day are on the Hajj 2027 page.
Night of the 10th: Muzdalifah
After sunset, leave Arafah calmly, not before. At Muzdalifah, pray Maghrib (three rak'ahs) and 'Isha (two) together, with one adhan and two iqamahs, then sleep (Sahih Muslim 1218). Pray Fajr early, then stand facing the qiblah in dua at al-Mash'ar al-Haram, or anywhere in Muzdalifah, until the sky is bright (Qur'an 2:198).
The weak, the elderly, women and those caring for them may leave after the middle of the night; the Prophet ﷺ allowed Sawdah to do so (Sahih al-Bukhari 1681, Sahih Muslim 1290).
Pebbles: pick up seven small pebbles, the size of a chickpea, for tomorrow (Sunan an-Nasa'i 3057). The rest (21 per day) can be collected here or in Mina: 49 in all if you leave on the 12th, 70 if you stay to the 13th.
10 Dhul-Hijjah (Sun 16 May): stone, sacrifice, shave, tawaf
This is Eid al-Adha, the busiest day. Leave Muzdalifah before sunrise for Mina and do four things, in this order if you can:
- Stone Jamrat al-'Aqabah, the large pillar nearest Makkah, with seven pebbles, one at a time. Stop the talbiyah when you start (Sahih al-Bukhari 1685).
- Sacrifice, if you are performing tamattu' or qiran (Qur'an 2:196). Most pilgrims buy an official sacrifice voucher in advance.
- Shave or shorten the hair, as at the end of Umrah. Everything forbidden by ihram is now allowed again, except relations with your spouse; change out of ihram.
- Tawaf al-ifadah in Makkah, a pillar of Hajj, then sa'i (tamattu' pilgrims, and qiran and ifrad pilgrims who did not do sa'i after the arrival tawaf). After this, everything is allowed.
اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ
Allahu akbar
Allah is the Greatest.
With each of the seven pebbles · Sahih Muslim 1218 · Sahih al-Bukhari 1751
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ، وَاللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ
Bismillah, wallahu akbar
In the name of Allah, and Allah is the Greatest.
Said at the sacrifice · Sahih Muslim 1966
If you do these out of order, there is no harm: on this day the Prophet ﷺ was asked about each change of order and said, “Do it, there is no harm” (Sahih al-Bukhari 1736, Sahih Muslim 1306). Tawaf al-ifadah can also be done later, in the days of tashriq.
11 Dhul-Hijjah (Mon 17 May): stone the three jamarat
The 11th, 12th and 13th are the days of tashriq, “days of eating, drinking and remembering Allah” (Sahih Muslim 1141). Spend the nights in Mina.
Each day, after midday, stone all three pillars with seven pebbles each, saying Allahu akbar with each:
- The small jamrah (al-Ula), nearest the Masjid al-Khayf. Then step aside, face the qiblah, and make a long dua.
- The middle jamrah (al-Wusta). Again step aside, face the qiblah, and make dua.
- Jamrat al-'Aqabah. Leave without stopping for dua.
Sahih al-Bukhari 1751-1753.
Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest. There is no god but Allah. Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, and to Allah belongs all praise.
The takbir of these days, reported from Ibn Mas'ud · Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah
12 Dhul-Hijjah (Tue 18 May): stone, then leave or stay
Stone the three jamarat after midday as on the 11th. You may then leave Mina before sunset: “Whoever hastens in two days, there is no sin on him, and whoever delays, there is no sin on him” (Qur'an 2:203). Most scholars say that if the sun sets while you are still in Mina, you stay the night and stone on the 13th.
13 Dhul-Hijjah (Wed 19 May): last stoning
Pilgrims who stay stone the three jamarat after midday, then leave Mina. Staying the third day is what the Prophet ﷺ did and is better for those who can.
Farewell tawaf (tawaf al-wada')
The last thing you do in Makkah is a tawaf of seven circuits, with no sa'i after it: “Let none of you leave until his last act is at the House” (Sahih Muslim 1327). A woman whose period has started is excused from it (Sahih al-Bukhari 1755).
Your Hajj is complete. May Allah accept it: “An accepted Hajj has no reward except Paradise” (Sahih al-Bukhari 1773).
How this guide works, and its sources
The order follows the hadith of Jabir on the Prophet's ﷺ Farewell Hajj (Sahih Muslim 1218), with the Qur'an (2:196-203, 22:27-29) and the hadith named beside each act. Dates are the site's Umm al-Qura estimates and match the Hajj 2027 page. Your group's timetable may differ because of crowd management; follow it where it does. This page does not issue rulings.
Frequently asked questions
Can I leave Muzdalifah before Fajr?
The weak, the elderly, women, children and those caring for them may leave after the middle of the night; the Prophet allowed Sawdah and others to (Sahih al-Bukhari 1681, Sahih Muslim 1290). Others stay until after Fajr, as the Prophet did.
Can someone throw the pebbles for me?
Scholars allow someone who cannot stone because of illness, old age or a small child to appoint a pilgrim who has stoned for themselves first. Jabir reported stoning on behalf of the children (Sunan Ibn Majah 3038).
What if I do the rites of the 10th out of order?
There is no harm. The Prophet was asked about shaving before sacrificing, sacrificing before stoning and other changes, and to each he said, “Do it, there is no harm” (Sahih al-Bukhari 1736, Sahih Muslim 1306).
When can I take off ihram during Hajj?
After stoning Jamrat al-'Aqabah and shaving or shortening on the 10th, everything is allowed except relations with your spouse. After tawaf al-ifadah, that is allowed too. 'A'ishah perfumed the Prophet “for his release before he made tawaf of the House” (Sahih al-Bukhari 1539).
How many pebbles do I need?
Seven on the 10th, then 21 on each day of tashriq (seven for each jamrah). That is 49 if you leave on the 12th and 70 if you stay for the 13th. Each pebble is about the size of a chickpea.
