Privacy Policy

Niyat ("we", "our", or "the app") is an Islamic companion application. We are committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and safeguard your information.
1. Information We Collect
We collect the following information to provide our services:
- Device Location: Used to calculate accurate prayer times for your area and determine the Qibla direction. Location data is processed on your device and is not stored on our servers.
- User Preferences: Your selected language and madhab (Islamic school of thought) are stored locally on your device to personalize your experience.
2. AI-Powered Features
Niyat uses third-party AI services to provide AI-assisted responses to your Islamic questions. When you use the chat feature:
- Your question, and the earlier messages in that conversation, are sent to Google's servers to write the answer.
- Your question is also sent to OpenAI, which turns it into a numeric representation used to find the relevant Qur'an and hadith passages. Our search index receives only that numeric representation, not your question.
- Conversations are not permanently stored by Niyat.

3. In-App Purchases
Niyat offers auto-renewable subscriptions managed entirely by Apple through the App Store. We do not collect or store your payment information. Please refer to Apple's Privacy Policy for details on how subscription data is handled.
4. Advertising and Analytics
Niyat shows you no third-party advertising. There are no banners, no interstitials, and no ad network delivering adverts inside the app.
We do use third-party services to see how the app is used and to measure the ads we run for Niyat elsewhere:
- Analytics (Google Firebase Analytics): Records which screens you open, which features you use, and whether you subscribe. It also records preferences and onboarding answers such as your language, your madhab, your region, and what you told us you came to Niyat for. We use the build of Firebase Analytics with advertising-identifier support removed, so it does not collect your device's advertising identifier.
- Advertising measurement (Meta and TikTok): These tell us when an install, a trial, or a subscription came from one of our ads, so we can stop paying for ads that do not work. They receive a short list of milestone events — finishing onboarding, viewing content, asking a question, opening the paywall, starting a trial, and purchasing, with the price and currency — plus the device signals their own software collects. They do not receive your questions, your prayer records, your journal, or your Qur'an reading.
- Subscription management (Superwall): Presents our paywalls and records what happened on them. It receives a random identifier for your install, your app language, and the first name you enter during onboarding if you enter one.
- App integrity and settings (Firebase App Check and Remote Config): App Check confirms a request comes from a genuine copy of Niyat. Remote Config fetches settings that let us change features without an app update. These carry an app identifier, not information about you.
Your device's advertising identifier is shared only if Apple's tracking prompt is shown to you and you allow it. If you decline, or you are never shown the prompt, it is not shared.
We do not sell or trade your personal information, and we do not share it with data brokers.
5. Data Storage and Security
Most of what you do in Niyat stays on your device. Prayer times are calculated on your device from your location. Your prayer records, Qur'an progress, journal entries, saved items, and app preferences are stored on your device, not on our servers.
Some information does reach our servers:
- Chat questions. Handled as described in section 2. We do not keep your conversations.
- Install and subscription measurement. When you first open the app, and at points in the subscription flow, Niyat sends us a random identifier created for your install, together with your app version, iOS version, device model, language, country, and whether you allowed Apple's tracking prompt. If you arrived from one of our ads, we also record which ad, and a one-way hash of the network address the install came from. This is how we match installs to ads.
- Onboarding answers. The multiple-choice answers you give during onboarding are stored against that same random identifier, so we can see what people come to Niyat for.
Niyat has no user accounts and never asks you to create one. We do not store your name or your email address on our servers. The identifier above is generated on your device, is not your Apple ID, and is not linked to your name. Requests to our servers travel over an encrypted connection and are checked with Firebase App Check.
6. Screen Time and Prayer Lock
Prayer Lock is an optional feature. If you turn it on, Niyat uses Apple's Screen Time technology (the Family Controls, Managed Settings and Device Activity frameworks) to block apps that you choose during your own prayer windows, until you log the prayer or the window ends. It works like this:
- You choose the apps in Apple's own picker. Apple gives Niyat only opaque tokens for your choices, so Niyat cannot see which apps you selected.
- Authorization is for your own device only ("individual" authorization). Niyat does not manage anyone else's device and cannot be used to monitor another person.
- Everything Prayer Lock does happens on your device. Niyat does not collect, store on our servers, sell, or share any information about which apps you chose, which apps you opened, how long you used your phone, or when apps were blocked.
- Niyat never uses Screen Time information for advertising, advertising measurement, or analytics about your app usage, and never shares it with data brokers.
- Niyat keeps an on-device record of whether a block was active during each of your prayer windows and how it ended (for example, that you logged the prayer), so the Progress tab can show you your own week. That record stays on your device.
- You can turn Prayer Lock off at any time in Profile → App Blocking, and you can revoke Niyat's Screen Time access in iOS Settings → Screen Time. Turning it off removes all blocks immediately.
7. Children's Privacy
Niyat does not knowingly collect personal information from children under the age of 13. The app is suitable for all ages and does not require account creation.
8. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Any changes will be reflected in the app with an updated effective date. We encourage you to review this policy periodically.
