Surah 80 of 114 · Makki
سُورَةُ عَبَسَ
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
1
عَبَسَ وَتَوَلَّىٰٓ
عَبَسَʿabasaHe frownedوَتَوَلَّىٰٓwatawallāand turned away
The Prophet frowned and turned away
⤳ Link
80:1
2
أَن جَآءَهُ ٱلْأَعْمَىٰ
أَنanBecauseجَآءَهُjāahucame to himٱلْأَعْمَىٰl-aʿmāthe blind man
Because there came to him the blind man, [interrupting]
⤳ Link
80:2
3
وَمَا يُدْرِيكَ لَعَلَّهُۥ يَزَّكَّىٰٓ
وَمَاwamāBut whatيُدْرِيكَyud'rīkawould make you knowلَعَلَّهُۥlaʿallahuthat he mightيَزَّكَّىٰٓyazzakkāpurify himself
But what would make you perceive, [O Muhammad], that perhaps he might be purified

80:3
4
أَوْ يَذَّكَّرُ فَتَنفَعَهُ ٱلذِّكْرَىٰٓ
أَوْawOrيَذَّكَّرُyadhakkarube remindedفَتَنفَعَهُfatanfaʿahuso would benefit himٱلذِّكْرَىٰٓl-dhik'rāthe reminder
Or be reminded and the remembrance would benefit him

80:4
5
أَمَّا مَنِ ٱسْتَغْنَىٰ
أَمَّاammāAs forمَنِmani(him) whoٱسْتَغْنَىٰis'taghnāconsiders himself free from need
As for he who thinks himself without need
⤳ Link
80:5
6
فَأَنتَ لَهُۥ تَصَدَّىٰ
فَأَنتَfa-antaSo youلَهُۥlahuto himتَصَدَّىٰtaṣaddāgive attention
To him you give attention
⤳ Link
80:6
7
وَمَا عَلَيْكَ أَلَّا يَزَّكَّىٰ
وَمَاwamāAnd notعَلَيْكَʿalaykaupon youأَلَّاallāthat notيَزَّكَّىٰyazzakkāhe purifies himself
And not upon you [is any blame] if he will not be purified
⤳ Link
80:7
8
وَأَمَّا مَن جَآءَكَ يَسْعَىٰ
وَأَمَّاwa-ammāBut as forمَنman(he) whoجَآءَكَjāakacame to youيَسْعَىٰyasʿāstriving
But as for he who came to you striving [for knowledge]

80:8
9
10
فَأَنتَ عَنْهُ تَلَهَّىٰ
فَأَنتَfa-antaBut youعَنْهُʿanhufrom himتَلَهَّىٰtalahhā(are) distracted
From him you are distracted
⤳ Link
80:10
11
كَلَّآ إِنَّهَا تَذْكِرَةٌۭ
كَلَّآkallāNayإِنَّهَاinnahāIndeed, itتَذْكِرَةٌۭtadhkiratun(is) a reminder
No! Indeed, these verses are a reminder

80:11
12
فَمَن شَآءَ ذَكَرَهُۥ
فَمَنfamanSo whosoeverشَآءَshāawillsذَكَرَهُۥdhakarahumay remember it
So whoever wills may remember it

80:12
13
فِى صُحُفٍۢ مُّكَرَّمَةٍۢ
فِىfīInصُحُفٍۢṣuḥufinsheetsمُّكَرَّمَةٍۢmukarramatinhonored
[It is recorded] in honored sheets
⤳ Link
80:13
14
مَّرْفُوعَةٍۢ مُّطَهَّرَةٍۭ
مَّرْفُوعَةٍۢmarfūʿatinExaltedمُّطَهَّرَةٍۭmuṭahharatinpurified
Exalted and purified
⤳ Link
80:14
15
بِأَيْدِى سَفَرَةٍۢ
بِأَيْدِىbi-aydīIn (the) handsسَفَرَةٍۢsafaratin(of) scribes
[Carried] by the hands of messenger-angels
⤳ Link
80:15
16
17
قُتِلَ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ مَآ أَكْفَرَهُۥ
قُتِلَqutilaIs destroyedٱلْإِنسَـٰنُl-insānu[the] manمَآmāhowأَكْفَرَهُۥakfarahuungrateful is he
Cursed is man; how disbelieving is he

80:17
18
مِنْ أَىِّ شَىْءٍ خَلَقَهُۥ
مِنْminFromأَىِّayyiwhatشَىْءٍshayinthingخَلَقَهُۥkhalaqahuHe created him
From what substance did He create him
⤳ Link
80:18
19
مِن نُّطْفَةٍ خَلَقَهُۥ فَقَدَّرَهُۥ
مِنminFromنُّطْفَةٍnuṭ'fatina semen-dropخَلَقَهُۥkhalaqahuHe created himفَقَدَّرَهُۥfaqaddarahuthen He proportioned him
From a sperm-drop He created him and destined for him
⤳ Link
80:19
20
ثُمَّ ٱلسَّبِيلَ يَسَّرَهُۥ
ثُمَّthummaThenٱلسَّبِيلَl-sabīlathe wayيَسَّرَهُۥyassarahuHe made easy for him
Then He eased the way for him
⤳ Link
80:20
21
ثُمَّ أَمَاتَهُۥ فَأَقْبَرَهُۥ
ثُمَّthummaThenأَمَاتَهُۥamātahuHe causes him to dieفَأَقْبَرَهُۥfa-aqbarahuand provides a grave for him
Then He causes his death and provides a grave for him

80:21
22
ثُمَّ إِذَا شَآءَ أَنشَرَهُۥ
ثُمَّthummaThenإِذَاidhāwhenشَآءَshāaHe willsأَنشَرَهُۥansharahuHe will resurrect him
Then when He wills, He will resurrect him
⤳ Link
80:22
23
كَلَّا لَمَّا يَقْضِ مَآ أَمَرَهُۥ
كَلَّاkallāNayلَمَّاlammāNotيَقْضِyaqḍihe has accomplishedمَآmāwhatأَمَرَهُۥamarahuHe commanded him
No! Man has not yet accomplished what He commanded him

80:23
24
فَلْيَنظُرِ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ إِلَىٰ طَعَامِهِۦٓ
فَلْيَنظُرِfalyanẓuriThen let lookٱلْإِنسَـٰنُl-insānuthe manإِلَىٰilāatطَعَامِهِۦٓṭaʿāmihihis food
Then let mankind look at his food

80:24
25
اَنَّا صَبَبْنَا ٱلْمَآءَ صَبًّۭا
اَنَّاannāThat [We]صَبَبْنَاṣababnā[We] pouredٱلْمَآءَl-māathe waterصَبًّۭاṣabban(in) abundance
How We poured down water in torrents

80:25
26
ثُمَّ شَقَقْنَا ٱلْأَرْضَ شَقًّۭا
ثُمَّthummaThenشَقَقْنَاshaqaqnāWe cleavedٱلْأَرْضَl-arḍathe earthشَقًّۭاshaqqansplitting
Then We broke open the earth, splitting [it with sprouts]

80:26
27
فَأَنۢبَتْنَا فِيهَا حَبًّۭا
فَأَنۢبَتْنَاfa-anbatnāThen We caused to growفِيهَاfīhāthereinحَبًّۭاḥabbangrain
And caused to grow within it grain
⤳ Link
80:27
28
وَعِنَبًۭا وَقَضْبًۭا
وَعِنَبًۭاwaʿinabanAnd grapesوَقَضْبًۭاwaqaḍbanand green fodder
And grapes and herbage
⤳ Link
80:28
29
وَزَيْتُونًۭا وَنَخْلًۭا
وَزَيْتُونًۭاwazaytūnanAnd oliveوَنَخْلًۭاwanakhlanand date-palms
And olive and palm trees
⤳ Link
80:29
30
وَحَدَآئِقَ غُلْبًۭا
وَحَدَآئِقَwaḥadāiqaAnd gardensغُلْبًۭاghul'ban(of) thick foliage
And gardens of dense shrubbery
⤳ Link
80:30
31
وَفَـٰكِهَةًۭ وَأَبًّۭا
وَفَـٰكِهَةًۭwafākihatanAnd fruitsوَأَبًّۭاwa-abbanand grass
And fruit and grass
⤳ Link
80:31
32
مَّتَـٰعًۭا لَّكُمْ وَلِأَنْعَـٰمِكُمْ
مَّتَـٰعًۭاmatāʿan(As) a provisionلَّكُمْlakumfor youوَلِأَنْعَـٰمِكُمْwali-anʿāmikumand for your cattle
[As] enjoyment for you and your grazing livestock
⤳ Link
80:32
33
فَإِذَا جَآءَتِ ٱلصَّآخَّةُ
فَإِذَاfa-idhāBut whenجَآءَتِjāaticomesٱلصَّآخَّةُl-ṣākhatuthe Deafening Blast
But when there comes the Deafening Blast

80:33
34
يَوْمَ يَفِرُّ ٱلْمَرْءُ مِنْ أَخِيهِ
يَوْمَyawma(The) Dayيَفِرُّyafirruwill fleeٱلْمَرْءُl-marua manمِنْminfromأَخِيهِakhīhihis brother
On the Day a man will flee from his brother
⤳ Link
80:34
35
وَأُمِّهِۦ وَأَبِيهِ
وَأُمِّهِۦwa-ummihiAnd his motherوَأَبِيهِwa-abīhiand his father
And his mother and his father
⤳ Link
80:35
36
وَصَـٰحِبَتِهِۦ وَبَنِيهِ
وَصَـٰحِبَتِهِۦwaṣāḥibatihiAnd his wifeوَبَنِيهِwabanīhiand his children
And his wife and his children
⤳ Link
80:36
37
لِكُلِّ ٱمْرِئٍۢ مِّنْهُمْ يَوْمَئِذٍۢ شَأْنٌۭ يُغْنِيهِ
لِكُلِّlikulliFor everyٱمْرِئٍۢim'ri-inmanمِّنْهُمْmin'humamong themيَوْمَئِذٍۢyawma-idhinthat Dayشَأْنٌۭshanun(will be) a matterيُغْنِيهِyugh'nīhioccupying him
For every man, that Day, will be a matter adequate for him

80:37
38
وُجُوهٌۭ يَوْمَئِذٍۢ مُّسْفِرَةٌۭ
وُجُوهٌۭwujūhunFacesيَوْمَئِذٍۢyawma-idhinthat Dayمُّسْفِرَةٌۭmus'firatun(will be) bright
[Some] faces, that Day, will be bright

80:38
39
ضَاحِكَةٌۭ مُّسْتَبْشِرَةٌۭ
ضَاحِكَةٌۭḍāḥikatunLaughingمُّسْتَبْشِرَةٌۭmus'tabshiratunrejoicing at good news
Laughing, rejoicing at good news
⤳ Link
80:39
40
وَوُجُوهٌۭ يَوْمَئِذٍ عَلَيْهَا غَبَرَةٌۭ
وَوُجُوهٌۭwawujūhunAnd facesيَوْمَئِذٍyawma-idhinthat Dayعَلَيْهَاʿalayhāupon themغَبَرَةٌۭghabaratun(will be) dust
And [other] faces, that Day, will have upon them dust
⤳ Link
80:40
41
تَرْهَقُهَا قَتَرَةٌ
تَرْهَقُهَاtarhaquhāWill cover themقَتَرَةٌqataratundarkness
Blackness will cover them
⤳ Link
80:41
42
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْكَفَرَةُ ٱلْفَجَرَةُ
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَulāikaThoseهُمُhumu[they]ٱلْكَفَرَةُl-kafaratu(are) the disbelieversٱلْفَجَرَةُl-fajaratuthe wicked ones
Those are the disbelievers, the wicked ones

80:42
