Surah 81 of 114 · Makki
سُورَةُ التَّكۡوِيرِ
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
1
إِذَا ٱلشَّمْسُ كُوِّرَتْ
إِذَاidhāWhenٱلشَّمْسُl-shamsuthe sunكُوِّرَتْkuwwiratis wrapped up
When the sun is wrapped up [in darkness]
⤳ Link
81:1
2
وَإِذَا ٱلنُّجُومُ ٱنكَدَرَتْ
وَإِذَاwa-idhāAnd whenٱلنُّجُومُl-nujūmuthe starsٱنكَدَرَتْinkadaratfall, losing their luster
And when the stars fall, dispersing

81:2
3
وَإِذَا ٱلْجِبَالُ سُيِّرَتْ
وَإِذَاwa-idhāAnd whenٱلْجِبَالُl-jibāluthe mountainsسُيِّرَتْsuyyiratare moved away
And when the mountains are removed
⤳ Link
81:3
4
وَإِذَا ٱلْعِشَارُ عُطِّلَتْ
وَإِذَاwa-idhāAnd whenٱلْعِشَارُl-ʿishāruthe full-term she-camelsعُطِّلَتْʿuṭṭilat(are) left untended
And when full-term she-camels are neglected

81:4
5
وَإِذَا ٱلْوُحُوشُ حُشِرَتْ
وَإِذَاwa-idhāAnd whenٱلْوُحُوشُl-wuḥūshuthe wild beastsحُشِرَتْḥushiratare gathered
And when the wild beasts are gathered
⤳ Link
81:5
6
وَإِذَا ٱلْبِحَارُ سُجِّرَتْ
وَإِذَاwa-idhāAnd whenٱلْبِحَارُl-biḥāruthe seasسُجِّرَتْsujjiratare made to overflow
And when the seas are filled with flame

81:6
7
وَإِذَا ٱلنُّفُوسُ زُوِّجَتْ
وَإِذَاwa-idhāAnd whenٱلنُّفُوسُl-nufūsuthe soulsزُوِّجَتْzuwwijatare paired
And when the souls are paired
⤳ Link
81:7
8
وَإِذَا ٱلْمَوْءُۥدَةُ سُئِلَتْ
وَإِذَاwa-idhāAnd whenٱلْمَوْءُۥدَةُl-mawūdatuthe female infant buried aliveسُئِلَتْsu-ilatis asked
And when the girl [who was] buried alive is asked

81:8
9
بِأَىِّ ذَنۢبٍۢ قُتِلَتْ
بِأَىِّbi-ayyiFor whatذَنۢبٍۢdhanbinsinقُتِلَتْqutilatshe was killed
For what sin she was killed

81:9
10
وَإِذَا ٱلصُّحُفُ نُشِرَتْ
وَإِذَاwa-idhāAnd whenٱلصُّحُفُl-ṣuḥufuthe pagesنُشِرَتْnushiratare laid open
And when the pages are made public
⤳ Link
81:10
11
وَإِذَا ٱلسَّمَآءُ كُشِطَتْ
وَإِذَاwa-idhāAnd whenٱلسَّمَآءُl-samāuthe skyكُشِطَتْkushiṭatis stripped away
And when the sky is stripped away
⤳ Link
81:11
12
وَإِذَا ٱلْجَحِيمُ سُعِّرَتْ
وَإِذَاwa-idhāAnd whenٱلْجَحِيمُl-jaḥīmuthe Hellfireسُعِّرَتْsuʿʿiratis set ablaze
And when Hellfire is set ablaze

81:12
13
وَإِذَا ٱلْجَنَّةُ أُزْلِفَتْ
وَإِذَاwa-idhāAnd whenٱلْجَنَّةُl-janatuParadiseأُزْلِفَتْuz'lifatis brought near
And when Paradise is brought near
⤳ Link
81:13
14
عَلِمَتْ نَفْسٌۭ مَّآ أَحْضَرَتْ
عَلِمَتْʿalimatWill knowنَفْسٌۭnafsuna soulمَّآmāwhatأَحْضَرَتْaḥḍaratit has brought
A soul will [then] know what it has brought [with it]

81:14
15
فَلَآ أُقْسِمُ بِٱلْخُنَّسِ
فَلَآfalāBut nayأُقْسِمُuq'simuI swearبِٱلْخُنَّسِbil-khunasiby the retreating planets
So I swear by the retreating stars

81:15
16
ٱلْجَوَارِ ٱلْكُنَّسِ
ٱلْجَوَارِal-jawāriThose that runٱلْكُنَّسِl-kunasi(and) disappear
Those that run [their courses] and disappear

81:16
17
وَٱلَّيْلِ إِذَا عَسْعَسَ
وَٱلَّيْلِwa-al-layliAnd the nightإِذَاidhāwhenعَسْعَسَʿasʿasait departs
And by the night as it closes in
⤳ Link
81:17
18
وَٱلصُّبْحِ إِذَا تَنَفَّسَ
وَٱلصُّبْحِwal-ṣub'ḥiAnd the dawnإِذَاidhāwhenتَنَفَّسَtanaffasait breathes
And by the dawn when it breathes
⤳ Link
81:18
19
إِنَّهُۥ لَقَوْلُ رَسُولٍۢ كَرِيمٍۢ
إِنَّهُۥinnahuIndeed, itلَقَوْلُlaqawlu(is) surely a wordرَسُولٍۢrasūlin(of) a Messengerكَرِيمٍۢkarīminnoble
[That] indeed, the Qur'an is a word [conveyed by] a noble messenger

81:19
20
ذِى قُوَّةٍ عِندَ ذِى ٱلْعَرْشِ مَكِينٍۢ
ذِىdhīPossessor ofقُوَّةٍquwwatinpowerعِندَʿindawithذِىdhī(the) Owner ofٱلْعَرْشِl-ʿarshithe Throneمَكِينٍۢmakīninsecure
[Who is] possessed of power and with the Owner of the Throne, secure [in position]

81:20
21
مُّطَاعٍۢ ثَمَّ أَمِينٍۢ
مُّطَاعٍۢmuṭāʿinOne to be obeyedثَمَّthammaandأَمِينٍۢamīnintrustworthy
Obeyed there [in the heavens] and trustworthy
⤳ Link
81:21
22
وَمَا صَاحِبُكُم بِمَجْنُونٍۢ
وَمَاwamāAnd notصَاحِبُكُمṣāḥibukum(is) your companionبِمَجْنُونٍۢbimajnūninmad
And your companion is not [at all] mad
⤳ Link
81:22
23
وَلَقَدْ رَءَاهُ بِٱلْأُفُقِ ٱلْمُبِينِ
وَلَقَدْwalaqadAnd certainlyرَءَاهُraāhuhe saw himبِٱلْأُفُقِbil-ufuqiin the horizonٱلْمُبِينِl-mubīnithe clear
And he has already seen Gabriel in the clear horizon

81:23
24
وَمَا هُوَ عَلَى ٱلْغَيْبِ بِضَنِينٍۢ
وَمَاwamāAnd notهُوَhuwahe (is)عَلَىʿalāonٱلْغَيْبِl-ghaybithe unseenبِضَنِينٍۢbiḍanīnina withholder
And Muhammad is not a withholder of [knowledge of] the unseen

81:24
25
وَمَا هُوَ بِقَوْلِ شَيْطَـٰنٍۢ رَّجِيمٍۢ
وَمَاwamāAnd notهُوَhuwaitبِقَوْلِbiqawli(is the) wordشَيْطَـٰنٍۢshayṭānin(of) Shaitaanرَّجِيمٍۢrajīminaccursed
And the Qur'an is not the word of a devil, expelled [from the heavens]

81:25
26
فَأَيْنَ تَذْهَبُونَ
فَأَيْنَfa-aynaSo whereتَذْهَبُونَtadhhabūnaare you going
So where are you going
⤳ Link
81:26
27
إِنْ هُوَ إِلَّا ذِكْرٌۭ لِّلْعَـٰلَمِينَ
إِنْinNotهُوَhuwaitإِلَّاillā(is) exceptذِكْرٌۭdhik'runa reminderلِّلْعَـٰلَمِينَlil'ʿālamīnato the worlds
It is not except a reminder to the worlds

81:27
28
لِمَن شَآءَ مِنكُمْ أَن يَسْتَقِيمَ
لِمَنlimanFor whoeverشَآءَshāawillsمِنكُمْminkumamong youأَنantoيَسْتَقِيمَyastaqīmatake a straight way
For whoever wills among you to take a right course

81:28
29
وَمَا تَشَآءُونَ إِلَّآ أَن يَشَآءَ ٱللَّهُ رَبُّ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ
وَمَاwamāAnd notتَشَآءُونَtashāūnayou willإِلَّآillāexceptأَنanthatيَشَآءَyashāawillsٱللَّهُl-lahuAllahرَبُّrabbuLordٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَl-ʿālamīna(of) the worlds
And you do not will except that Allah wills - Lord of the worlds

81:29
