Surah 78 of 114 · Makki
سُورَةُ النَّبَإِ
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
1
عَمَّ يَتَسَآءَلُونَ
عَمَّʿammaAbout whatيَتَسَآءَلُونَyatasāalūnaare they asking one another
About what are they asking one another

78:1
2
عَنِ ٱلنَّبَإِ ٱلْعَظِيمِ
عَنِʿaniAboutٱلنَّبَإِl-naba-ithe Newsٱلْعَظِيمِl-ʿaẓīmithe Great
About the great news

78:2
3
ٱلَّذِى هُمْ فِيهِ مُخْتَلِفُونَ
ٱلَّذِىalladhī(About) whichهُمْhumtheyفِيهِfīhi(are) concerning itمُخْتَلِفُونَmukh'talifūna(in) disagreement
That over which they are in disagreement

4
كَلَّا سَيَعْلَمُونَ
كَلَّاkallāNayسَيَعْلَمُونَsayaʿlamūna(soon) they will know
No! They are going to know
⤳ Link
78:4
5
ثُمَّ كَلَّا سَيَعْلَمُونَ
ثُمَّthummaThenكَلَّاkallāNayسَيَعْلَمُونَsayaʿlamūna(soon) they will know
Then, no! They are going to know

6
أَلَمْ نَجْعَلِ ٱلْأَرْضَ مِهَـٰدًۭا
أَلَمْalamHave notنَجْعَلِnajʿaliWe madeٱلْأَرْضَl-arḍathe earthمِهَـٰدًۭاmihādana resting place
Have We not made the earth a resting place

78:6
7
وَٱلْجِبَالَ أَوْتَادًۭا
وَٱلْجِبَالَwal-jibālaAnd the mountainsأَوْتَادًۭاawtādan(as) pegs
And the mountains as stakes

78:7
8
وَخَلَقْنَـٰكُمْ أَزْوَٰجًۭا
وَخَلَقْنَـٰكُمْwakhalaqnākumAnd We created youأَزْوَٰجًۭاazwājan(in) pairs
And We created you in pairs
⤳ Link
78:8
9
وَجَعَلْنَا نَوْمَكُمْ سُبَاتًۭا
وَجَعَلْنَاwajaʿalnāAnd We madeنَوْمَكُمْnawmakumyour sleepسُبَاتًۭاsubātan(for) rest
And made your sleep [a means for] rest

78:9
10
وَجَعَلْنَا ٱلَّيْلَ لِبَاسًۭا
وَجَعَلْنَاwajaʿalnāAnd We madeٱلَّيْلَal-laylathe nightلِبَاسًۭاlibāsan(as) covering
And made the night as clothing

78:10
11
وَجَعَلْنَا ٱلنَّهَارَ مَعَاشًۭا
وَجَعَلْنَاwajaʿalnāAnd We madeٱلنَّهَارَl-nahārathe dayمَعَاشًۭاmaʿāshan(for) livelihood
And made the day for livelihood

78:11
12
وَبَنَيْنَا فَوْقَكُمْ سَبْعًۭا شِدَادًۭا
وَبَنَيْنَاwabanaynāAnd We constructedفَوْقَكُمْfawqakumover youسَبْعًۭاsabʿansevenشِدَادًۭاshidādanstrong
And constructed above you seven strong [heavens]

13
وَجَعَلْنَا سِرَاجًۭا وَهَّاجًۭا
وَجَعَلْنَاwajaʿalnāAnd We placedسِرَاجًۭاsirājana lampوَهَّاجًۭاwahhājanburning
And made [therein] a burning lamp
⤳ Link
78:13
14
وَأَنزَلْنَا مِنَ ٱلْمُعْصِرَٰتِ مَآءًۭ ثَجَّاجًۭا
وَأَنزَلْنَاwa-anzalnāAnd We sent downمِنَminafromٱلْمُعْصِرَٰتِl-muʿ'ṣirātithe rain cloudsمَآءًۭmāanwaterثَجَّاجًۭاthajjājanpouring abundantly
And sent down, from the rain clouds, pouring water

15
لِّنُخْرِجَ بِهِۦ حَبًّۭا وَنَبَاتًۭا
لِّنُخْرِجَlinukh'rijaThat We may bring forthبِهِۦbihitherebyحَبًّۭاḥabbangrainوَنَبَاتًۭاwanabātanand vegetation
That We may bring forth thereby grain and vegetation

16
وَجَنَّـٰتٍ أَلْفَافًا
وَجَنَّـٰتٍwajannātinAnd gardensأَلْفَافًاalfāfan(of) thick foliage
And gardens of entwined growth
⤳ Link
78:16
17
إِنَّ يَوْمَ ٱلْفَصْلِ كَانَ مِيقَـٰتًۭا
إِنَّinnaIndeedيَوْمَyawma(the) Dayٱلْفَصْلِl-faṣli(of) the Judgmentكَانَkānaisمِيقَـٰتًۭاmīqātanan appointed time
Indeed, the Day of Judgement is an appointed time

18
يَوْمَ يُنفَخُ فِى ٱلصُّورِ فَتَأْتُونَ أَفْوَاجًۭا
يَوْمَyawma(The) Dayيُنفَخُyunfakhu(in which) shall be blownفِىfīinٱلصُّورِl-ṣūrithe trumpetفَتَأْتُونَfatatūnaand you will come forthأَفْوَاجًۭاafwājan(in) crowds
The Day the Horn is blown and you will come forth in multitudes

19
وَفُتِحَتِ ٱلسَّمَآءُ فَكَانَتْ أَبْوَٰبًۭا
وَفُتِحَتِwafutiḥatiAnd is openedٱلسَّمَآءُl-samāuthe heavenفَكَانَتْfakānatand becomesأَبْوَٰبًۭاabwābangateways
And the heaven is opened and will become gateways

78:19
20
وَسُيِّرَتِ ٱلْجِبَالُ فَكَانَتْ سَرَابًا
وَسُيِّرَتِwasuyyiratiAnd are movedٱلْجِبَالُl-jibāluthe mountainsفَكَانَتْfakānatand becomeسَرَابًاsarābana mirage
And the mountains are removed and will be [but] a mirage

78:20
21
إِنَّ جَهَنَّمَ كَانَتْ مِرْصَادًۭا
إِنَّinnaIndeedجَهَنَّمَjahannamaHellكَانَتْkānatisمِرْصَادًۭاmir'ṣādanlying in wait
Indeed, Hell has been lying in wait

22
لِّلطَّـٰغِينَ مَـَٔابًۭا
لِّلطَّـٰغِينَlilṭṭāghīnaFor the transgressorsمَـَٔابًۭاmaābana place of return
For the transgressors, a place of return

78:22
23
لَّـٰبِثِينَ فِيهَآ أَحْقَابًۭا
لَّـٰبِثِينَlābithīna(They will) be remainingفِيهَآfīhāthereinأَحْقَابًۭاaḥqāban(for) ages
In which they will remain for ages [unending]

24
لَّا يَذُوقُونَ فِيهَا بَرْدًۭا وَلَا شَرَابًا
لَّاlāNotيَذُوقُونَyadhūqūnathey will tasteفِيهَاfīhāthereinبَرْدًۭاbardancoolnessوَلَاwalāand notشَرَابًاsharābanany drink
They will not taste therein [any] coolness or drink

25
إِلَّا حَمِيمًۭا وَغَسَّاقًۭا
إِلَّاillāExceptحَمِيمًۭاḥamīmanscalding waterوَغَسَّاقًۭاwaghassāqanand purulence
Except scalding water and [foul] purulence

78:25
26
جَزَآءًۭ وِفَاقًا
جَزَآءًۭjazāanA recompenseوِفَاقًاwifāqanappropriate
An appropriate recompense
⤳ Link
78:26
27
إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ لَا يَرْجُونَ حِسَابًۭا
إِنَّهُمْinnahumIndeed, theyكَانُوا۟kānūwereلَاlānotيَرْجُونَyarjūnaexpectingحِسَابًۭاḥisābanan account
Indeed, they were not expecting an account

78:27
28
وَكَذَّبُوا۟ بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا كِذَّابًۭا
وَكَذَّبُوا۟wakadhabūAnd they deniedبِـَٔايَـٰتِنَاbiāyātināOur Signsكِذَّابًۭاkidhāban(with) denial
And denied Our verses with [emphatic] denial

78:28
29
وَكُلَّ شَىْءٍ أَحْصَيْنَـٰهُ كِتَـٰبًۭا
وَكُلَّwakullaAnd everyشَىْءٍshayinthingأَحْصَيْنَـٰهُaḥṣaynāhuWe have enumerated itكِتَـٰبًۭاkitāban(in) a Book
But all things We have enumerated in writing

78:29
30
فَذُوقُوا۟ فَلَن نَّزِيدَكُمْ إِلَّا عَذَابًا
فَذُوقُوا۟fadhūqūSo tasteفَلَنfalanand neverنَّزِيدَكُمْnazīdakumWe will increase youإِلَّاillāexceptعَذَابًاʿadhāban(in) punishment
So taste [the penalty], and never will We increase you except in torment

31
إِنَّ لِلْمُتَّقِينَ مَفَازًا
إِنَّinnaIndeedلِلْمُتَّقِينَlil'muttaqīnafor the righteousمَفَازًاmafāzan(is) success
Indeed, for the righteous is attainment

78:31
32
حَدَآئِقَ وَأَعْنَـٰبًۭا
حَدَآئِقَḥadāiqaGardensوَأَعْنَـٰبًۭاwa-aʿnābanand grapevines
Gardens and grapevines
⤳ Link
78:32
33
وَكَوَاعِبَ أَتْرَابًۭا
وَكَوَاعِبَwakawāʿibaAnd splendid companionsأَتْرَابًۭاatrābanwell-matched
And full-breasted [companions] of equal age
⤳ Link
78:33
34
35
لَّا يَسْمَعُونَ فِيهَا لَغْوًۭا وَلَا كِذَّٰبًۭا
لَّاlāNotيَسْمَعُونَyasmaʿūnathey will hearفِيهَاfīhāthereinلَغْوًۭاlaghwanany vain talkوَلَاwalāand notكِذَّٰبًۭاkidhābanany falsehood
No ill speech will they hear therein or any falsehood

78:35
36
جَزَآءًۭ مِّن رَّبِّكَ عَطَآءً حِسَابًۭا
جَزَآءًۭjazāan(As) a rewardمِّنminfromرَّبِّكَrabbikayour Lordعَطَآءًʿaṭāana giftحِسَابًۭاḥisāban(according to) account
[As] reward from your Lord, [a generous] gift [made due by] account

78:36
37
رَّبِّ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ۖ لَا يَمْلِكُونَ مِنْهُ خِطَابًۭا
رَّبِّrabbiLordٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِl-samāwāti(of) the heavensوَٱلْأَرْضِwal-arḍiand the earthوَمَاwamāand whateverبَيْنَهُمَاbaynahumā(is) between both of themٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ۖl-raḥmānithe Most Graciousلَاlānotيَمْلِكُونَyamlikūnathey have powerمِنْهُmin'hufrom Himخِطَابًۭاkhiṭāban(to) address
[From] the Lord of the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them, the Most Merciful. They possess not from Him [authority for] speech

78:37
38
يَوْمَ يَقُومُ ٱلرُّوحُ وَٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةُ صَفًّۭا ۖ لَّا يَتَكَلَّمُونَ إِلَّا مَنْ أَذِنَ لَهُ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنُ وَقَالَ صَوَابًۭا
يَوْمَyawma(The) Dayيَقُومُyaqūmuwill standٱلرُّوحُl-rūḥuthe Spiritوَٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةُwal-malāikatuand the Angelsصَفًّۭا ۖṣaffan(in) rowsلَّاlānotيَتَكَلَّمُونَyatakallamūnathey will speakإِلَّاillāexceptمَنْman(one) who أَذِنَadhinapermitsلَهُlahu[for] himٱلرَّحْمَـٰنُl-raḥmānuthe Most Graciousوَقَالَwaqālaand he (will) sayصَوَابًۭاṣawāban(what is) correct
The Day that the Spirit and the angels will stand in rows, they will not speak except for one whom the Most Merciful permits, and he will say what is correct

78:38
39
ذَٰلِكَ ٱلْيَوْمُ ٱلْحَقُّ ۖ فَمَن شَآءَ ٱتَّخَذَ إِلَىٰ رَبِّهِۦ مَـَٔابًا
ذَٰلِكَdhālikaThatٱلْيَوْمُl-yawmu(is) the Dayٱلْحَقُّ ۖl-ḥaquthe TrueفَمَنfamanSo whoeverشَآءَshāawillsٱتَّخَذَittakhadhalet him takeإِلَىٰilātowardsرَبِّهِۦrabbihihis Lordمَـَٔابًاmaābana return
That is the True Day; so he who wills may take to his Lord a [way of] return

78:39
40
إِنَّآ أَنذَرْنَـٰكُمْ عَذَابًۭا قَرِيبًۭا يَوْمَ يَنظُرُ ٱلْمَرْءُ مَا قَدَّمَتْ يَدَاهُ وَيَقُولُ ٱلْكَافِرُ يَـٰلَيْتَنِى كُنتُ تُرَٰبًۢا
إِنَّآinnāIndeed Weأَنذَرْنَـٰكُمْandharnākum[We] have warned youعَذَابًۭاʿadhāban(of) a punishmentقَرِيبًۭاqarībannearيَوْمَyawma(the) Dayيَنظُرُyanẓuruwill seeٱلْمَرْءُl-maruthe manمَاmāwhatقَدَّمَتْqaddamathave sent forthيَدَاهُyadāhuhis handsوَيَقُولُwayaqūluand will sayٱلْكَافِرُl-kāfiruthe disbelieverيَـٰلَيْتَنِىyālaytanīO I wishكُنتُkuntuI wereتُرَٰبًۢاturābandust
Indeed, We have warned you of a near punishment on the Day when a man will observe what his hands have put forth and the disbeliever will say, "Oh, I wish that I were dust
