Surah 83 of 114 · Makki
سُورَةُ المُطَفِّفِينَ
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
1
وَيْلٌۭ لِّلْمُطَفِّفِينَ
وَيْلٌۭwaylunWoeلِّلْمُطَفِّفِينَlil'muṭaffifīnato those who give less
Woe to those who give less [than due]
⤳ Link
83:1
2
ٱلَّذِينَ إِذَا ٱكْتَالُوا۟ عَلَى ٱلنَّاسِ يَسْتَوْفُونَ
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnaThose whoإِذَاidhāwhenٱكْتَالُوا۟ik'tālūthey take a measureعَلَىʿalāfromٱلنَّاسِl-nāsithe peopleيَسْتَوْفُونَyastawfūnathey take in full
Who, when they take a measure from people, take in full

83:2
3
وَإِذَا كَالُوهُمْ أَو وَّزَنُوهُمْ يُخْسِرُونَ
وَإِذَاwa-idhāBut whenكَالُوهُمْkālūhumthey give by measure (to) themأَوaworوَّزَنُوهُمْwazanūhumthey weigh (for) themيُخْسِرُونَyukh'sirūnathey give less
But if they give by measure or by weight to them, they cause loss

83:3
4
أَلَا يَظُنُّ أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ أَنَّهُم مَّبْعُوثُونَ
أَلَاalāDo notيَظُنُّyaẓunnuthinkأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَulāikathoseأَنَّهُمannahumthat theyمَّبْعُوثُونَmabʿūthūna(will be) resurrected
Do they not think that they will be resurrected

5
6
يَوْمَ يَقُومُ ٱلنَّاسُ لِرَبِّ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ
يَوْمَyawma(The) Dayيَقُومُyaqūmuwill standٱلنَّاسُl-nāsumankindلِرَبِّlirabbibefore (the) Lordٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَl-ʿālamīna(of) the worlds
The Day when mankind will stand before the Lord of the worlds

83:6
7
كَلَّآ إِنَّ كِتَـٰبَ ٱلْفُجَّارِ لَفِى سِجِّينٍۢ
كَلَّآkallāNayإِنَّinnaIndeedكِتَـٰبَkitāba(the) recordٱلْفُجَّارِl-fujāri(of) the wickedلَفِىlafī(is) surely inسِجِّينٍۢsijjīninSijjin
No! Indeed, the record of the wicked is in sijjeen

83:7
8
وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا سِجِّينٌۭ
وَمَآwamāAnd whatأَدْرَىٰكَadrākacan make you knowمَاmāwhatسِجِّينٌۭsijjīnun(is) Sijjin
And what can make you know what is sijjeen

83:8
9
كِتَـٰبٌۭ مَّرْقُومٌۭ
كِتَـٰبٌۭkitābunA bookمَّرْقُومٌۭmarqūmunwritten
It is [their destination recorded in] a register inscribed

83:9
10
وَيْلٌۭ يَوْمَئِذٍۢ لِّلْمُكَذِّبِينَ
وَيْلٌۭwaylunWoeيَوْمَئِذٍۢyawma-idhinthat Dayلِّلْمُكَذِّبِينَlil'mukadhibīnato the deniers
Woe, that Day, to the deniers

83:10
11
ٱلَّذِينَ يُكَذِّبُونَ بِيَوْمِ ٱلدِّينِ
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnaThose whoيُكَذِّبُونَyukadhibūnadenyبِيَوْمِbiyawmi(the) Dayٱلدِّينِl-dīni(of) the Judgment
Who deny the Day of Recompense

83:11
12
وَمَا يُكَذِّبُ بِهِۦٓ إِلَّا كُلُّ مُعْتَدٍ أَثِيمٍ
وَمَاwamāAnd notيُكَذِّبُyukadhibucan denyبِهِۦٓbihi[of] itإِلَّاillāexceptكُلُّkullueveryمُعْتَدٍmuʿ'tadintransgressorأَثِيمٍathīminsinful
And none deny it except every sinful transgressor

83:12
13
إِذَا تُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْهِ ءَايَـٰتُنَا قَالَ أَسَـٰطِيرُ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ
إِذَاidhāWhenتُتْلَىٰtut'lāare recitedعَلَيْهِʿalayhito himءَايَـٰتُنَاāyātunāOur Versesقَالَqālahe saysأَسَـٰطِيرُasāṭīruStoriesٱلْأَوَّلِينَl-awalīna(of) the former (people)
When Our verses are recited to him, he says, "Legends of the former peoples

83:13
14
كَلَّا ۖ بَلْ ۜ رَانَ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِم مَّا كَانُوا۟ يَكْسِبُونَ
كَلَّا ۖkallāNayبَلْ ۜbalButرَانَrāna(the) stain has coveredعَلَىٰʿalā[over]قُلُوبِهِمqulūbihimtheir heartsمَّاmā(for) whatكَانُوا۟kānūthey used toيَكْسِبُونَyaksibūnaearn
No! Rather, the stain has covered their hearts of that which they were earning

83:14
15
كَلَّآ إِنَّهُمْ عَن رَّبِّهِمْ يَوْمَئِذٍۢ لَّمَحْجُوبُونَ
كَلَّآkallāNayإِنَّهُمْinnahumIndeed, theyعَنʿanfromرَّبِّهِمْrabbihimtheir Lordيَوْمَئِذٍۢyawma-idhinthat Dayلَّمَحْجُوبُونَlamaḥjūbūnasurely will be partitioned
No! Indeed, from their Lord, that Day, they will be partitioned

83:15
16
ثُمَّ إِنَّهُمْ لَصَالُوا۟ ٱلْجَحِيمِ
ثُمَّthummaThenإِنَّهُمْinnahumindeed, theyلَصَالُوا۟laṣālū(surely) will burnٱلْجَحِيمِl-jaḥīmi(in) the Hellfire
Then indeed, they will [enter and] burn in Hellfire

17
ثُمَّ يُقَالُ هَـٰذَا ٱلَّذِى كُنتُم بِهِۦ تُكَذِّبُونَ
ثُمَّthummaThenيُقَالُyuqāluit will be saidهَـٰذَاhādhāThisٱلَّذِىalladhī(is) whatكُنتُمkuntumyou used toبِهِۦbihi[of it]تُكَذِّبُونَtukadhibūnadeny
Then it will be said [to them], "This is what you used to deny

83:17
18
كَلَّآ إِنَّ كِتَـٰبَ ٱلْأَبْرَارِ لَفِى عِلِّيِّينَ
كَلَّآkallāNayإِنَّinnaIndeedكِتَـٰبَkitāba(the) recordٱلْأَبْرَارِl-abrāri(of) the righteousلَفِىlafī(will be) surely inعِلِّيِّينَʿilliyyīnaIlliyin
No! Indeed, the record of the righteous is in 'illiyyun

19
وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا عِلِّيُّونَ
وَمَآwamāAnd whatأَدْرَىٰكَadrākacan make you knowمَاmāwhatعِلِّيُّونَʿilliyyūna(is) Illiyun
And what can make you know what is 'illiyyun

20
كِتَـٰبٌۭ مَّرْقُومٌۭ
كِتَـٰبٌۭkitābunA bookمَّرْقُومٌۭmarqūmunwritten
It is [their destination recorded in] a register inscribed

83:20
21
يَشْهَدُهُ ٱلْمُقَرَّبُونَ
يَشْهَدُهُyashhaduhuWitness itٱلْمُقَرَّبُونَl-muqarabūnathose brought near
Which is witnessed by those brought near [to Allah]

83:21
22
إِنَّ ٱلْأَبْرَارَ لَفِى نَعِيمٍ
إِنَّinnaIndeedٱلْأَبْرَارَl-abrārathe righteousلَفِىlafī(will be) surely inنَعِيمٍnaʿīminbliss
Indeed, the righteous will be in pleasure

23
عَلَى ٱلْأَرَآئِكِ يَنظُرُونَ
عَلَىʿalāOnٱلْأَرَآئِكِl-arāikithronesيَنظُرُونَyanẓurūnaobserving
On adorned couches, observing

83:23
24
تَعْرِفُ فِى وُجُوهِهِمْ نَضْرَةَ ٱلنَّعِيمِ
تَعْرِفُtaʿrifuYou will recognizeفِىfīinوُجُوهِهِمْwujūhihimtheir facesنَضْرَةَnaḍrata(the) radianceٱلنَّعِيمِl-naʿīmi(of) bliss
You will recognize in their faces the radiance of pleasure

83:24
25
يُسْقَوْنَ مِن رَّحِيقٍۢ مَّخْتُومٍ
يُسْقَوْنَyus'qawnaThey will be given to drinkمِنminofرَّحِيقٍۢraḥīqina pure wineمَّخْتُومٍmakhtūminsealed
They will be given to drink [pure] wine [which was] sealed

83:25
26
خِتَـٰمُهُۥ مِسْكٌۭ ۚ وَفِى ذَٰلِكَ فَلْيَتَنَافَسِ ٱلْمُتَنَـٰفِسُونَ
خِتَـٰمُهُۥkhitāmuhuIts sealمِسْكٌۭ ۚmis'kun(will be of) muskوَفِىwafīAnd forذَٰلِكَdhālikathatفَلْيَتَنَافَسِfalyatanāfasilet aspireٱلْمُتَنَـٰفِسُونَl-mutanāfisūnathe aspirers
The last of it is musk. So for this let the competitors compete

83:26
27
وَمِزَاجُهُۥ مِن تَسْنِيمٍ
وَمِزَاجُهُۥwamizājuhuAnd its mixtureمِنmin(is) ofتَسْنِيمٍtasnīminTasneem
And its mixture is of Tasneem

83:27
28
عَيْنًۭا يَشْرَبُ بِهَا ٱلْمُقَرَّبُونَ
عَيْنًۭاʿaynanA springيَشْرَبُyashrabuwill drinkبِهَاbihāfrom itٱلْمُقَرَّبُونَl-muqarabūnathose brought near
A spring from which those near [to Allah] drink

83:28
29
إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ أَجْرَمُوا۟ كَانُوا۟ مِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ يَضْحَكُونَ
إِنَّinnaIndeedٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose whoأَجْرَمُوا۟ajramūcommitted crimesكَانُوا۟kānūused toمِنَminaatٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose whoءَامَنُوا۟āmanūbelievedيَضْحَكُونَyaḍḥakūnalaugh
Indeed, those who committed crimes used to laugh at those who believed

83:29
30
وَإِذَا مَرُّوا۟ بِهِمْ يَتَغَامَزُونَ
وَإِذَاwa-idhāAnd whenمَرُّوا۟marrūthey passedبِهِمْbihimby themيَتَغَامَزُونَyataghāmazūnathey winked at one another
And when they passed by them, they would exchange derisive glances

83:30
31
وَإِذَا ٱنقَلَبُوٓا۟ إِلَىٰٓ أَهْلِهِمُ ٱنقَلَبُوا۟ فَكِهِينَ
وَإِذَاwa-idhāAnd whenٱنقَلَبُوٓا۟inqalabūthey returnedإِلَىٰٓilātoأَهْلِهِمُahlihimutheir peopleٱنقَلَبُوا۟inqalabūthey would returnفَكِهِينَfakihīnajesting
And when they returned to their people, they would return jesting

83:31
32
وَإِذَا رَأَوْهُمْ قَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّ هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ لَضَآلُّونَ
وَإِذَاwa-idhāAnd whenرَأَوْهُمْra-awhumthey saw themقَالُوٓا۟qālūthey saidإِنَّinnaIndeedهَـٰٓؤُلَآءِhāulāitheseلَضَآلُّونَlaḍāllūnasurely have gone astray
And when they saw them, they would say, "Indeed, those are truly lost

83:32
33
وَمَآ أُرْسِلُوا۟ عَلَيْهِمْ حَـٰفِظِينَ
وَمَآwamāBut notأُرْسِلُوا۟ur'silūthey had been sentعَلَيْهِمْʿalayhimover themحَـٰفِظِينَḥāfiẓīna(as) guardians
But they had not been sent as guardians over them

83:33
34
فَٱلْيَوْمَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ مِنَ ٱلْكُفَّارِ يَضْحَكُونَ
فَٱلْيَوْمَfal-yawmaSo todayٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose whoءَامَنُوا۟āmanūbelieved مِنَminaatٱلْكُفَّارِl-kufārithe disbelieversيَضْحَكُونَyaḍḥakūnathey will laugh
So Today those who believed are laughing at the disbelievers

35
عَلَى ٱلْأَرَآئِكِ يَنظُرُونَ
عَلَىʿalāOnٱلْأَرَآئِكِl-arāikithe thronesيَنظُرُونَyanẓurūnaobserving
On adorned couches, observing

83:35
36
هَلْ ثُوِّبَ ٱلْكُفَّارُ مَا كَانُوا۟ يَفْعَلُونَ
هَلْhalHave (not)ثُوِّبَthuwwibabeen rewardedٱلْكُفَّارُl-kufāruthe disbelieversمَاmā(for) whatكَانُوا۟kānūthey used toيَفْعَلُونَyafʿalūnado
Have the disbelievers [not] been rewarded [this Day] for what they used to do
