Surah 71 of 114 · Makki
سُورَةُ نُوحٍ
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
1
إِنَّآ أَرْسَلْنَا نُوحًا إِلَىٰ قَوْمِهِۦٓ أَنْ أَنذِرْ قَوْمَكَ مِن قَبْلِ أَن يَأْتِيَهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌۭ
إِنَّآinnāIndeed, Weأَرْسَلْنَاarsalnā[We] sentنُوحًاnūḥanNuhإِلَىٰilātoقَوْمِهِۦٓqawmihihis peopleأَنْanthatأَنذِرْandhirWarnقَوْمَكَqawmakayour peopleمِنminfromقَبْلِqablibeforeأَنan[that]يَأْتِيَهُمْyatiyahumcomes to themعَذَابٌʿadhābuna punishmentأَلِيمٌۭalīmunpainful
Indeed, We sent Noah to his people, [saying], "Warn your people before there comes to them a painful punishment

71:1
2
قَالَ يَـٰقَوْمِ إِنِّى لَكُمْ نَذِيرٌۭ مُّبِينٌ
قَالَqālaHe saidيَـٰقَوْمِyāqawmiO my peopleإِنِّىinnīIndeed, I amلَكُمْlakumto youنَذِيرٌۭnadhīruna warnerمُّبِينٌmubīnunclear
He said, "O my people, indeed I am to you a clear warner

71:2
3
أَنِ ٱعْبُدُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَٱتَّقُوهُ وَأَطِيعُونِ
أَنِaniThatٱعْبُدُوا۟uʿ'budūWorshipٱللَّهَl-lahaAllahوَٱتَّقُوهُwa-ittaqūhuand fear Himوَأَطِيعُونِwa-aṭīʿūniand obey me
[Saying], 'Worship Allah, fear Him and obey me

71:3
4
يَغْفِرْ لَكُم مِّن ذُنُوبِكُمْ وَيُؤَخِّرْكُمْ إِلَىٰٓ أَجَلٍۢ مُّسَمًّى ۚ إِنَّ أَجَلَ ٱللَّهِ إِذَا جَآءَ لَا يُؤَخَّرُ ۖ لَوْ كُنتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ
يَغْفِرْyaghfirHe will forgiveلَكُمlakumfor youمِّنmin[of]ذُنُوبِكُمْdhunūbikumyour sinsوَيُؤَخِّرْكُمْwayu-akhir'kumand give you respiteإِلَىٰٓilāforأَجَلٍۢajalina termمُّسَمًّى ۚmusammanspecifiedإِنَّinnaIndeedأَجَلَajala(the) termٱللَّهِl-lahi(of) Allahإِذَاidhāwhenجَآءَjāait comesلَاlānotيُؤَخَّرُ ۖyu-akharuis delayedلَوْlawifكُنتُمْkuntumyouتَعْلَمُونَtaʿlamūnaknow
Allah will forgive you of your sins and delay you for a specified term. Indeed, the time [set by] Allah, when it comes, will not be delayed, if you only knew

71:4

قَالَ رَبِّ إِنِّى دَعَوْتُ قَوْمِى لَيْلًۭا وَنَهَارًۭا
قَالَqālaHe saidرَبِّrabbiMy LordإِنِّىinnīIndeed, Iدَعَوْتُdaʿawtuinvitedقَوْمِىqawmīmy peopleلَيْلًۭاlaylannightوَنَهَارًۭاwanahāranand day
He said, "My Lord, indeed I invited my people [to truth] night and day

71:5
6
فَلَمْ يَزِدْهُمْ دُعَآءِىٓ إِلَّا فِرَارًۭا
فَلَمْfalamBut notيَزِدْهُمْyazid'humincreased themدُعَآءِىٓduʿāīmy invitationإِلَّاillāexceptفِرَارًۭاfirāran(in) flight
But my invitation increased them not except in flight

7
وَإِنِّى كُلَّمَا دَعَوْتُهُمْ لِتَغْفِرَ لَهُمْ جَعَلُوٓا۟ أَصَـٰبِعَهُمْ فِىٓ ءَاذَانِهِمْ وَٱسْتَغْشَوْا۟ ثِيَابَهُمْ وَأَصَرُّوا۟ وَٱسْتَكْبَرُوا۟ ٱسْتِكْبَارًۭا
وَإِنِّىwa-innīAnd indeed, Iكُلَّمَاkullamāevery timeدَعَوْتُهُمْdaʿawtuhumI invited themلِتَغْفِرَlitaghfirathat You may forgiveلَهُمْlahumthemجَعَلُوٓا۟jaʿalūthey putأَصَـٰبِعَهُمْaṣābiʿahumtheir fingersفِىٓfīinءَاذَانِهِمْādhānihimtheir earsوَٱسْتَغْشَوْا۟wa-is'taghshawand covered themselvesثِيَابَهُمْthiyābahum(with) their garmentsوَأَصَرُّوا۟wa-aṣarrūand persistedوَٱسْتَكْبَرُوا۟wa-is'takbarūand were arrogantٱسْتِكْبَارًۭاis'tik'bāran(with) pride
And indeed, every time I invited them that You may forgive them, they put their fingers in their ears, covered themselves with their garments, persisted, and were arrogant with [great] arrogance

ثُمَّ إِنِّى دَعَوْتُهُمْ جِهَارًۭا
ثُمَّthummaThenإِنِّىinnīindeed, Iدَعَوْتُهُمْdaʿawtuhuminvited themجِهَارًۭاjihāranpublicly
Then I invited them publicly

9
ثُمَّ إِنِّىٓ أَعْلَنتُ لَهُمْ وَأَسْرَرْتُ لَهُمْ إِسْرَارًۭا
ثُمَّthummaThenإِنِّىٓinnīindeed, Iأَعْلَنتُaʿlantuannouncedلَهُمْlahumto themوَأَسْرَرْتُwa-asrartuand I confidedلَهُمْlahumto themإِسْرَارًۭاis'rāransecretly
Then I announced to them and [also] confided to them secretly

10
فَقُلْتُ ٱسْتَغْفِرُوا۟ رَبَّكُمْ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ غَفَّارًۭا
فَقُلْتُfaqul'tuThen I saidٱسْتَغْفِرُوا۟is'taghfirūAsk forgivenessرَبَّكُمْrabbakum(from) your LordإِنَّهُۥinnahuIndeed, HeكَانَkānaisغَفَّارًۭاghaffāranOft-Forgiving
And said, 'Ask forgiveness of your Lord. Indeed, He is ever a Perpetual Forgiver

11
يُرْسِلِ ٱلسَّمَآءَ عَلَيْكُم مِّدْرَارًۭا
يُرْسِلِyur'siliHe will send downٱلسَّمَآءَl-samāa(rain from) the skyعَلَيْكُمʿalaykumupon youمِّدْرَارًۭاmid'rāran(in) abundance
He will send [rain from] the sky upon you in [continuing] showers

12
وَيُمْدِدْكُم بِأَمْوَٰلٍۢ وَبَنِينَ وَيَجْعَل لَّكُمْ جَنَّـٰتٍۢ وَيَجْعَل لَّكُمْ أَنْهَـٰرًۭا
وَيُمْدِدْكُمwayum'did'kumAnd provide youبِأَمْوَٰلٍۢbi-amwālinwith wealthوَبَنِينَwabanīnaand childrenوَيَجْعَلwayajʿaland makeلَّكُمْlakumfor youجَنَّـٰتٍۢjannātingardensوَيَجْعَلwayajʿaland makeلَّكُمْlakumfor youأَنْهَـٰرًۭاanhāranrivers
And give you increase in wealth and children and provide for you gardens and provide for you rivers

71:12
13
مَّا لَكُمْ لَا تَرْجُونَ لِلَّهِ وَقَارًۭا
مَّاmāWhatلَكُمْlakum(is) for youلَاlānotتَرْجُونَtarjūnayou attributeلِلَّهِlillahito Allahوَقَارًۭاwaqārangrandeur
What is [the matter] with you that you do not attribute to Allah [due] grandeur

14
وَقَدْ خَلَقَكُمْ أَطْوَارًا
وَقَدْwaqadAnd indeedخَلَقَكُمْkhalaqakumHe created youأَطْوَارًاaṭwāran(in) stages
While He has created you in stages

71:14
15
أَلَمْ تَرَوْا۟ كَيْفَ خَلَقَ ٱللَّهُ سَبْعَ سَمَـٰوَٰتٍۢ طِبَاقًۭا
أَلَمْalamDo notتَرَوْا۟tarawyou seeكَيْفَkayfahowخَلَقَkhalaqadid createٱللَّهُl-lahuAllahسَبْعَsabʿa(the) sevenسَمَـٰوَٰتٍۢsamāwātinheavensطِبَاقًۭاṭibāqan(in) layers
Do you not consider how Allah has created seven heavens in layers

71:15
16
وَجَعَلَ ٱلْقَمَرَ فِيهِنَّ نُورًۭا وَجَعَلَ ٱلشَّمْسَ سِرَاجًۭا
وَجَعَلَwajaʿalaAnd madeٱلْقَمَرَl-qamarathe moonفِيهِنَّfīhinnathereinنُورًۭاnūrana lightوَجَعَلَwajaʿalaand madeٱلشَّمْسَl-shamsathe sunسِرَاجًۭاsirājana lamp
And made the moon therein a [reflected] light and made the sun a burning lamp

71:16
17
وَٱللَّهُ أَنۢبَتَكُم مِّنَ ٱلْأَرْضِ نَبَاتًۭا
وَٱللَّهُwal-lahuAnd Allahأَنۢبَتَكُمanbatakumhas caused you to growمِّنَminafromٱلْأَرْضِl-arḍithe earthنَبَاتًۭاnabātan(as) a growth
And Allah has caused you to grow from the earth a [progressive] growth

18
ثُمَّ يُعِيدُكُمْ فِيهَا وَيُخْرِجُكُمْ إِخْرَاجًۭا
ثُمَّthummaThenيُعِيدُكُمْyuʿīdukumHe will return youفِيهَاfīhāinto itوَيُخْرِجُكُمْwayukh'rijukumand bring you forthإِخْرَاجًۭاikh'rājan(a new) bringing forth
Then He will return you into it and extract you [another] extraction

19
وَٱللَّهُ جَعَلَ لَكُمُ ٱلْأَرْضَ بِسَاطًۭا
وَٱللَّهُwal-lahuAnd Allahجَعَلَjaʿalamadeلَكُمُlakumufor youٱلْأَرْضَl-arḍathe earthبِسَاطًۭاbisāṭanan expanse
And Allah has made for you the earth an expanse

71:19
20
لِّتَسْلُكُوا۟ مِنْهَا سُبُلًۭا فِجَاجًۭا
لِّتَسْلُكُوا۟litaslukūThat you may go alongمِنْهَاmin'hāthereinسُبُلًۭاsubulan(in) pathsفِجَاجًۭاfijājanwide
That you may follow therein roads of passage

71:20
21
قَالَ نُوحٌۭ رَّبِّ إِنَّهُمْ عَصَوْنِى وَٱتَّبَعُوا۟ مَن لَّمْ يَزِدْهُ مَالُهُۥ وَوَلَدُهُۥٓ إِلَّا خَسَارًۭا
قَالَqālaSaidنُوحٌۭnūḥunNuhرَّبِّrabbiMy LordإِنَّهُمْinnahumIndeed, theyعَصَوْنِىʿaṣawnīdisobeyed meوَٱتَّبَعُوا۟wa-ittabaʿūand followedمَنman(the one) whoلَّمْlam(did) notيَزِدْهُyazid'huincrease himمَالُهُۥmāluhuhis wealthوَوَلَدُهُۥٓwawaladuhuand his childrenإِلَّاillāexceptخَسَارًۭاkhasāran(in) loss
Noah said, "My Lord, indeed they have disobeyed me and followed him whose wealth and children will not increase him except in loss

71:21
22
وَمَكَرُوا۟ مَكْرًۭا كُبَّارًۭا
وَمَكَرُوا۟wamakarūAnd they have plannedمَكْرًۭاmakrana planكُبَّارًۭاkubbārangreat
And they conspired an immense conspiracy

23
وَقَالُوا۟ لَا تَذَرُنَّ ءَالِهَتَكُمْ وَلَا تَذَرُنَّ وَدًّۭا وَلَا سُوَاعًۭا وَلَا يَغُوثَ وَيَعُوقَ وَنَسْرًۭا
وَقَالُوا۟waqālūAnd they saidلَاlā(Do) notتَذَرُنَّtadharunnaleaveءَالِهَتَكُمْālihatakumyour godsوَلَاwalāand (do) notتَذَرُنَّtadharunnaleaveوَدًّۭاwaddanWaddوَلَاwalāand notسُوَاعًۭاsuwāʿanSuwaوَلَاwalāand notيَغُوثَyaghūthaYaguthوَيَعُوقَwayaʿūqaand Yauqوَنَسْرًۭاwanasranand Nasr
And said, 'Never leave your gods and never leave Wadd or Suwa' or Yaghuth and Ya'uq and Nasr

71:23
24
وَقَدْ أَضَلُّوا۟ كَثِيرًۭا ۖ وَلَا تَزِدِ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ إِلَّا ضَلَـٰلًۭا
وَقَدْwaqadAnd indeedأَضَلُّوا۟aḍallūthey have led astrayكَثِيرًۭا ۖkathīranmanyوَلَاwalāAnd notتَزِدِtazidiincreaseٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَl-ẓālimīnathe wrongdoersإِلَّاillāexceptضَلَـٰلًۭاḍalālan(in) error
And already they have misled many. And, [my Lord], do not increase the wrongdoers except in error

71:24
25
مِّمَّا خَطِيٓـَٔـٰتِهِمْ أُغْرِقُوا۟ فَأُدْخِلُوا۟ نَارًۭا فَلَمْ يَجِدُوا۟ لَهُم مِّن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ أَنصَارًۭا
مِّمَّاmimmāBecause ofخَطِيٓـَٔـٰتِهِمْkhaṭīātihimtheir sinsأُغْرِقُوا۟ugh'riqūthey were drownedفَأُدْخِلُوا۟fa-ud'khilūthen made to enterنَارًۭاnāran(the) Fireفَلَمْfalamand notيَجِدُوا۟yajidūthey foundلَهُمlahumfor themselvesمِّنminfromدُونِdūnibesidesٱللَّهِl-lahiAllahأَنصَارًۭاanṣāranany helpers
Because of their sins they were drowned and put into the Fire, and they found not for themselves besides Allah [any] helpers

71:25
26
وَقَالَ نُوحٌۭ رَّبِّ لَا تَذَرْ عَلَى ٱلْأَرْضِ مِنَ ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ دَيَّارًا
وَقَالَwaqālaAnd saidنُوحٌۭnūḥunNuhرَّبِّrabbiMy Lordلَاlā(Do) notتَذَرْtadharleaveعَلَىʿalāonٱلْأَرْضِl-arḍithe earthمِنَminaanyٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَl-kāfirīna(of) the disbelieversدَيَّارًاdayyāran(as) an inhabitant
And Noah said, "My Lord, do not leave upon the earth from among the disbelievers an inhabitant

71:26
27
إِنَّكَ إِن تَذَرْهُمْ يُضِلُّوا۟ عِبَادَكَ وَلَا يَلِدُوٓا۟ إِلَّا فَاجِرًۭا كَفَّارًۭا
إِنَّكَinnakaIndeed, YouإِنinifتَذَرْهُمْtadharhumYou leave themيُضِلُّوا۟yuḍillūthey will misleadعِبَادَكَʿibādakaYour slavesوَلَاwalāand notيَلِدُوٓا۟yalidūthey will begetإِلَّاillāexceptفَاجِرًۭاfājirana wickedكَفَّارًۭاkaffārana disbeliever
Indeed, if You leave them, they will mislead Your servants and not beget except [every] wicked one and [confirmed] disbeliever

71:27
28
رَّبِّ ٱغْفِرْ لِى وَلِوَٰلِدَىَّ وَلِمَن دَخَلَ بَيْتِىَ مُؤْمِنًۭا وَلِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَٱلْمُؤْمِنَـٰتِ وَلَا تَزِدِ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ إِلَّا تَبَارًۢا
رَّبِّrabbiMy Lordٱغْفِرْigh'firForgiveلِىlīmeوَلِوَٰلِدَىَّwaliwālidayyaand my parentsوَلِمَنwalimanand whoeverدَخَلَdakhalaentersبَيْتِىَbaytiyamy house مُؤْمِنًۭاmu'minana believerوَلِلْمُؤْمِنِينَwalil'mu'minīnaand the believing menوَٱلْمُؤْمِنَـٰتِwal-mu'minātiand the believing womenوَلَاwalāAnd (do) notتَزِدِtazidiincreaseٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَl-ẓālimīnathe wrongdoersإِلَّاillāexceptتَبَارًۢاtabāran(in) destruction
My Lord, forgive me and my parents and whoever enters my house a believer and the believing men and believing women. And do not increase the wrongdoers except in destruction
