Surah 72 of 114 · Makki
سُورَةُ الجِنِّ
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
1
قُلْ أُوحِىَ إِلَىَّ أَنَّهُ ٱسْتَمَعَ نَفَرٌۭ مِّنَ ٱلْجِنِّ فَقَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّا سَمِعْنَا قُرْءَانًا عَجَبًۭا
قُلْqulSayأُوحِىَūḥiyaIt has been revealedإِلَىَّilayyato meأَنَّهُannahuthatٱسْتَمَعَis'tamaʿalistenedنَفَرٌۭnafaruna groupمِّنَminaofٱلْجِنِّl-jinithe jinnفَقَالُوٓا۟faqālūand they saidإِنَّاinnāIndeed, weسَمِعْنَاsamiʿ'nāheardقُرْءَانًاqur'ānana Quranعَجَبًۭاʿajabanamazing
Say, [O Muhammad], "It has been revealed to me that a group of the jinn listened and said, 'Indeed, we have heard an amazing Qur'an

72:1
2
يَهْدِىٓ إِلَى ٱلرُّشْدِ فَـَٔامَنَّا بِهِۦ ۖ وَلَن نُّشْرِكَ بِرَبِّنَآ أَحَدًۭا
يَهْدِىٓyahdīIt guidesإِلَىilātoٱلرُّشْدِl-rush'dithe right wayفَـَٔامَنَّاfaāmannāso we believeبِهِۦ ۖbihiin itوَلَنwalanand neverنُّشْرِكَnush'rikawe will associateبِرَبِّنَآbirabbināwith our Lordأَحَدًۭاaḥadananyone
It guides to the right course, and we have believed in it. And we will never associate with our Lord anyone

72:2
3
وَأَنَّهُۥ تَعَـٰلَىٰ جَدُّ رَبِّنَا مَا ٱتَّخَذَ صَـٰحِبَةًۭ وَلَا وَلَدًۭا
وَأَنَّهُۥwa-annahuAnd that He تَعَـٰلَىٰtaʿālāExalted isجَدُّjaddu(the) Majestyرَبِّنَاrabbinā(of) our Lord مَاmānotٱتَّخَذَittakhadhaHe has takenصَـٰحِبَةًۭṣāḥibatana wifeوَلَاwalāand notوَلَدًۭاwaladana son
And [it teaches] that exalted is the nobleness of our Lord; He has not taken a wife or a son

72:3
4
وَأَنَّهُۥ كَانَ يَقُولُ سَفِيهُنَا عَلَى ٱللَّهِ شَطَطًۭا
وَأَنَّهُۥwa-annahuAnd that heكَانَkānaused toيَقُولُyaqūluspeak سَفِيهُنَاsafīhunāthe foolish among usعَلَىʿalāagainstٱللَّهِl-lahiAllahشَطَطًۭاshaṭaṭanan excessive transgression
And that our foolish one has been saying about Allah an excessive transgression

72:4
5
وَأَنَّا ظَنَنَّآ أَن لَّن تَقُولَ ٱلْإِنسُ وَٱلْجِنُّ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ كَذِبًۭا
وَأَنَّاwa-annāAnd that weظَنَنَّآẓanannāthoughtأَنanthatلَّنlanneverتَقُولَtaqūlawill sayٱلْإِنسُl-insuthe menوَٱلْجِنُّwal-jinuand the jinnعَلَىʿalāagainstٱللَّهِl-lahiAllahكَذِبًۭاkadhibanany lie
And we had thought that mankind and the jinn would never speak about Allah a lie

72:5
6
وَأَنَّهُۥ كَانَ رِجَالٌۭ مِّنَ ٱلْإِنسِ يَعُوذُونَ بِرِجَالٍۢ مِّنَ ٱلْجِنِّ فَزَادُوهُمْ رَهَقًۭا
وَأَنَّهُۥwa-annahuAnd thatكَانَkāna(there) wereرِجَالٌۭrijālunmenمِّنَminaamongٱلْإِنسِl-insimankindيَعُوذُونَyaʿūdhūnawho sought refugeبِرِجَالٍۢbirijālinin (the) menمِّنَminafromٱلْجِنِّl-jinithe jinnفَزَادُوهُمْfazādūhumso they increased themرَهَقًۭاrahaqan(in) burden
And there were men from mankind who sought refuge in men from the jinn, so they [only] increased them in burden

72:6
7
وَأَنَّهُمْ ظَنُّوا۟ كَمَا ظَنَنتُمْ أَن لَّن يَبْعَثَ ٱللَّهُ أَحَدًۭا
وَأَنَّهُمْwa-annahumAnd that theyظَنُّوا۟ẓannūthoughtكَمَاkamāasظَنَنتُمْẓanantumyou thoughtأَنanthatلَّنlanneverيَبْعَثَyabʿathawill raiseٱللَّهُl-lahuAllahأَحَدًۭاaḥadananyone
And they had thought, as you thought, that Allah would never send anyone [as a messenger]

72:7
8
وَأَنَّا لَمَسْنَا ٱلسَّمَآءَ فَوَجَدْنَـٰهَا مُلِئَتْ حَرَسًۭا شَدِيدًۭا وَشُهُبًۭا
وَأَنَّاwa-annāAnd that weلَمَسْنَاlamasnāsought to touchٱلسَّمَآءَl-samāathe heavenفَوَجَدْنَـٰهَاfawajadnāhābut we found itمُلِئَتْmuli-atfilled (with)حَرَسًۭاḥarasanguardsشَدِيدًۭاshadīdansevereوَشُهُبًۭاwashuhubanand flaming fires
And we have sought [to reach] the heaven but found it filled with powerful guards and burning flames

72:8
9
وَأَنَّا كُنَّا نَقْعُدُ مِنْهَا مَقَـٰعِدَ لِلسَّمْعِ ۖ فَمَن يَسْتَمِعِ ٱلْـَٔانَ يَجِدْ لَهُۥ شِهَابًۭا رَّصَدًۭا
وَأَنَّاwa-annāAnd that weكُنَّاkunnāused toنَقْعُدُnaqʿudusitمِنْهَاmin'hāthere inمَقَـٰعِدَmaqāʿidapositionsلِلسَّمْعِ ۖlilssamʿifor hearingفَمَنfamanbut (he) whoيَسْتَمِعِyastamiʿilistensٱلْـَٔانَl-ānanowيَجِدْyajidwill findلَهُۥlahufor himشِهَابًۭاshihābana flaming fireرَّصَدًۭاraṣadanwaiting
And we used to sit therein in positions for hearing, but whoever listens now will find a burning flame lying in wait for him

72:9
10
وَأَنَّا لَا نَدْرِىٓ أَشَرٌّ أُرِيدَ بِمَن فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ أَمْ أَرَادَ بِهِمْ رَبُّهُمْ رَشَدًۭا
وَأَنَّاwa-annāAnd that we لَاlānotنَدْرِىٓnadrīwe knowأَشَرٌّasharrunwhether evilأُرِيدَurīdais intendedبِمَنbimanfor (those) whoفِىfī(are) inٱلْأَرْضِl-arḍithe earthأَمْamorأَرَادَarādaintendsبِهِمْbihimfor themرَبُّهُمْrabbuhumtheir Lordرَشَدًۭاrashadana right path
And we do not know [therefore] whether evil is intended for those on earth or whether their Lord intends for them a right course

72:10
11
وَأَنَّا مِنَّا ٱلصَّـٰلِحُونَ وَمِنَّا دُونَ ذَٰلِكَ ۖ كُنَّا طَرَآئِقَ قِدَدًۭا
وَأَنَّاwa-annāAnd that [we]مِنَّاminnāamong usٱلصَّـٰلِحُونَl-ṣāliḥūna(are) the righteousوَمِنَّاwaminnāand among usدُونَdūna(are) other thanذَٰلِكَ ۖdhālikathatكُنَّاkunnāWeطَرَآئِقَṭarāiqa(are on) waysقِدَدًۭاqidadandifferent
And among us are the righteous, and among us are [others] not so; we were [of] divided ways

72:11
12
وَأَنَّا ظَنَنَّآ أَن لَّن نُّعْجِزَ ٱللَّهَ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ وَلَن نُّعْجِزَهُۥ هَرَبًۭا
وَأَنَّاwa-annāAnd that weظَنَنَّآẓanannā[we] have become certainأَنanthatلَّنlanneverنُّعْجِزَnuʿ'jizawe will cause failureٱللَّهَl-laha(to) Allahفِىfīinٱلْأَرْضِl-arḍithe earthوَلَنwalanand neverنُّعْجِزَهُۥnuʿ'jizahuwe can escape Himهَرَبًۭاharaban(by) flight
And we have become certain that we will never cause failure to Allah upon earth, nor can we escape Him by flight

72:12
13
وَأَنَّا لَمَّا سَمِعْنَا ٱلْهُدَىٰٓ ءَامَنَّا بِهِۦ ۖ فَمَن يُؤْمِنۢ بِرَبِّهِۦ فَلَا يَخَافُ بَخْسًۭا وَلَا رَهَقًۭا
وَأَنَّاwa-annāAnd that [we]لَمَّاlammāwhenسَمِعْنَاsamiʿ'nāwe heardٱلْهُدَىٰٓl-hudāthe Guidanceءَامَنَّاāmannāwe believedبِهِۦ ۖbihiin itفَمَنfamanAnd whoeverيُؤْمِنۢyu'minbelievesبِرَبِّهِۦbirabbihiin his Lordفَلَاfalāthen notيَخَافُyakhāfuhe will fearبَخْسًۭاbakhsanany lossوَلَاwalāand notرَهَقًۭاrahaqanany burden
And when we heard the guidance, we believed in it. And whoever believes in his Lord will not fear deprivation or burden

72:13
14
وَأَنَّا مِنَّا ٱلْمُسْلِمُونَ وَمِنَّا ٱلْقَـٰسِطُونَ ۖ فَمَنْ أَسْلَمَ فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ تَحَرَّوْا۟ رَشَدًۭا
وَأَنَّاwa-annāAnd that weمِنَّاminnāamong usٱلْمُسْلِمُونَl-mus'limūna(are) Muslimsوَمِنَّاwaminnāand among usٱلْقَـٰسِطُونَ ۖl-qāsiṭūna(are) unjustفَمَنْfamanAnd whoeverأَسْلَمَaslamasubmitsفَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَfa-ulāikathen thoseتَحَرَّوْا۟taḥarrawhave soughtرَشَدًۭاrashadan(the) right path
And among us are Muslims [in submission to Allah], and among us are the unjust. And whoever has become Muslim - those have sought out the right course

72:14
15
وَأَمَّا ٱلْقَـٰسِطُونَ فَكَانُوا۟ لِجَهَنَّمَ حَطَبًۭا
وَأَمَّاwa-ammāAnd as forٱلْقَـٰسِطُونَl-qāsiṭūnathe unjustفَكَانُوا۟fakānūthey will beلِجَهَنَّمَlijahannamafor Hellحَطَبًۭاḥaṭabanfirewood
But as for the unjust, they will be, for Hell, firewood

72:15
16
وَأَلَّوِ ٱسْتَقَـٰمُوا۟ عَلَى ٱلطَّرِيقَةِ لَأَسْقَيْنَـٰهُم مَّآءً غَدَقًۭا
وَأَلَّوِwa-allawiAnd that ifٱسْتَقَـٰمُوا۟is'taqāmūthey had remainedعَلَىʿalāonٱلطَّرِيقَةِl-ṭarīqatithe Wayلَأَسْقَيْنَـٰهُمla-asqaynāhumsurely We (would) have given them to drinkمَّآءًmāanwaterغَدَقًۭاghadaqan(in) abundance
And [Allah revealed] that if they had remained straight on the way, We would have given them abundant provision

72:16
17
لِّنَفْتِنَهُمْ فِيهِ ۚ وَمَن يُعْرِضْ عَن ذِكْرِ رَبِّهِۦ يَسْلُكْهُ عَذَابًۭا صَعَدًۭا
لِّنَفْتِنَهُمْlinaftinahumThat We might test themفِيهِ ۚfīhithereinوَمَنwamanAnd whoeverيُعْرِضْyuʿ'riḍturns awayعَنʿanfromذِكْرِdhik'rithe Remembranceرَبِّهِۦrabbihi(of) his Lordيَسْلُكْهُyasluk'huHe will make him enterعَذَابًۭاʿadhābana punishmentصَعَدًۭاṣaʿadansevere
So We might test them therein. And whoever turns away from the remembrance of his Lord He will put into arduous punishment

72:17
18
وَأَنَّ ٱلْمَسَـٰجِدَ لِلَّهِ فَلَا تَدْعُوا۟ مَعَ ٱللَّهِ أَحَدًۭا
وَأَنَّwa-annaAnd thatٱلْمَسَـٰجِدَl-masājidathe masjidsلِلَّهِlillahi(are) for Allahفَلَاfalāso (do) notتَدْعُوا۟tadʿūcallمَعَmaʿawithٱللَّهِl-lahiAllahأَحَدًۭاaḥadananyone
And [He revealed] that the masjids are for Allah, so do not invoke with Allah anyone

72:18
19
وَأَنَّهُۥ لَمَّا قَامَ عَبْدُ ٱللَّهِ يَدْعُوهُ كَادُوا۟ يَكُونُونَ عَلَيْهِ لِبَدًۭا
وَأَنَّهُۥwa-annahuAnd thatلَمَّاlammāwhenقَامَqāmastood upعَبْدُʿabdu(the) slaveٱللَّهِl-lahi(of) Allahيَدْعُوهُyadʿūhucalling (upon) Himكَادُوا۟kādūthey almostيَكُونُونَyakūnūnabecameعَلَيْهِʿalayhiaround himلِبَدًۭاlibadana compacted mass
And that when the Servant of Allah stood up supplicating Him, they almost became about him a compacted mass

72:19
20
قُلْ إِنَّمَآ أَدْعُوا۟ رَبِّى وَلَآ أُشْرِكُ بِهِۦٓ أَحَدًۭا
قُلْqulSayإِنَّمَآinnamāOnlyأَدْعُوا۟adʿūI call uponرَبِّىrabbīmy Lordوَلَآwalāand notأُشْرِكُush'rikuI associateبِهِۦٓbihiwith Himأَحَدًۭاaḥadananyone
Say, [O Muhammad], "I only invoke my Lord and do not associate with Him anyone

72:20
21
قُلْ إِنِّى لَآ أَمْلِكُ لَكُمْ ضَرًّۭا وَلَا رَشَدًۭا
قُلْqulSayإِنِّىinnīIndeed, Iلَآlā(do) notأَمْلِكُamlikupossessلَكُمْlakumfor youضَرًّۭاḍarranany harmوَلَاwalāand notرَشَدًۭاrashadanright path
Say, "Indeed, I do not possess for you [the power of] harm or right direction

72:21
22
قُلْ إِنِّى لَن يُجِيرَنِى مِنَ ٱللَّهِ أَحَدٌۭ وَلَنْ أَجِدَ مِن دُونِهِۦ مُلْتَحَدًا
قُلْqulSayإِنِّىinnīIndeed Iلَنlanneverيُجِيرَنِىyujīranīcan protect meمِنَminafromٱللَّهِl-lahiAllahأَحَدٌۭaḥadunanyoneوَلَنْwalanand neverأَجِدَajidacan I findمِنminfromدُونِهِۦdūnihibesides Himمُلْتَحَدًاmul'taḥadanany refuge
Say, "Indeed, there will never protect me from Allah anyone [if I should disobey], nor will I find in other than Him a refuge

72:22
23
إِلَّا بَلَـٰغًۭا مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ وَرِسَـٰلَـٰتِهِۦ ۚ وَمَن يَعْصِ ٱللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُۥ فَإِنَّ لَهُۥ نَارَ جَهَنَّمَ خَـٰلِدِينَ فِيهَآ أَبَدًا
إِلَّاillāButبَلَـٰغًۭاbalāghan(the) notificationمِّنَminafromٱللَّهِl-lahiAllahوَرِسَـٰلَـٰتِهِۦ ۚwarisālātihiand His MessagesوَمَنwamanAnd whoeverيَعْصِyaʿṣidisobeysٱللَّهَl-lahaAllahوَرَسُولَهُۥwarasūlahuand His Messengerفَإِنَّfa-innathen indeedلَهُۥlahufor himنَارَnāra(is the) Fireجَهَنَّمَjahannama(of) Hellخَـٰلِدِينَkhālidīna(they will) abideفِيهَآfīhāthereinأَبَدًاabadanforever
But [I have for you] only notification from Allah, and His messages." And whoever disobeys Allah and His Messenger - then indeed, for him is the fire of Hell; they will abide therein forever

72:23
24
حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَا رَأَوْا۟ مَا يُوعَدُونَ فَسَيَعْلَمُونَ مَنْ أَضْعَفُ نَاصِرًۭا وَأَقَلُّ عَدَدًۭا
حَتَّىٰٓḥattāUntilإِذَاidhāwhenرَأَوْا۟ra-awthey seeمَاmāwhatيُوعَدُونَyūʿadūnathey are promisedفَسَيَعْلَمُونَfasayaʿlamūnathen they will knowمَنْmanwhoأَضْعَفُaḍʿafu(is) weakerنَاصِرًۭاnāṣiran(in) helpersوَأَقَلُّwa-aqalluand fewerعَدَدًۭاʿadadan(in) number
[The disbelievers continue] until, when they see that which they are promised, then they will know who is weaker in helpers and less in number

72:24
25
قُلْ إِنْ أَدْرِىٓ أَقَرِيبٌۭ مَّا تُوعَدُونَ أَمْ يَجْعَلُ لَهُۥ رَبِّىٓ أَمَدًا
قُلْqulSayإِنْinNotأَدْرِىٓadrīI knowأَقَرِيبٌۭaqarībunwhether is nearمَّاmāwhatتُوعَدُونَtūʿadūnayou are promisedأَمْamor (whether)يَجْعَلُyajʿaluwill appointلَهُۥlahufor itرَبِّىٓrabbīmy Lordأَمَدًاamadana (distant) term
Say, "I do not know if what you are promised is near or if my Lord will grant for it a [long] period

72:25
26
عَـٰلِمُ ٱلْغَيْبِ فَلَا يُظْهِرُ عَلَىٰ غَيْبِهِۦٓ أَحَدًا
عَـٰلِمُʿālimu(The) All-Knowerٱلْغَيْبِl-ghaybi(of) the unseenفَلَاfalāso notيُظْهِرُyuẓ'hiruHe revealsعَلَىٰʿalāfromغَيْبِهِۦٓghaybihiHis unseenأَحَدًاaḥadan(to) anyone
[He is] Knower of the unseen, and He does not disclose His [knowledge of the] unseen to anyone

72:26
27
إِلَّا مَنِ ٱرْتَضَىٰ مِن رَّسُولٍۢ فَإِنَّهُۥ يَسْلُكُ مِنۢ بَيْنِ يَدَيْهِ وَمِنْ خَلْفِهِۦ رَصَدًۭا
إِلَّاillāExceptمَنِmaniwhomٱرْتَضَىٰir'taḍāHe has approvedمِنminofرَّسُولٍۢrasūlina Messengerفَإِنَّهُۥfa-innahuand indeed, Heيَسْلُكُyaslukumakes to marchمِنۢminfromبَيْنِbaynibeforeيَدَيْهِyadayhihimوَمِنْwaminand fromخَلْفِهِۦkhalfihibehind himرَصَدًۭاraṣadana guard
Except whom He has approved of messengers, and indeed, He sends before each messenger and behind him observers

72:27
28
لِّيَعْلَمَ أَن قَدْ أَبْلَغُوا۟ رِسَـٰلَـٰتِ رَبِّهِمْ وَأَحَاطَ بِمَا لَدَيْهِمْ وَأَحْصَىٰ كُلَّ شَىْءٍ عَدَدًۢا
لِّيَعْلَمَliyaʿlamaThat He may make evidentأَنanthatقَدْqadindeedأَبْلَغُوا۟ablaghūthey have conveyedرِسَـٰلَـٰتِrisālāti(the) Messagesرَبِّهِمْrabbihim(of) their Lordوَأَحَاطَwa-aḥāṭaand He has encompassedبِمَاbimāwhatلَدَيْهِمْladayhim(is) with themوَأَحْصَىٰwa-aḥṣāand He takes accountكُلَّkulla(of) allشَىْءٍshayinthingsعَدَدًۢاʿadadan(in) number
That he may know that they have conveyed the messages of their Lord; and He has encompassed whatever is with them and has enumerated all things in number
