Surah 89 of 114 · Makki
سُورَةُ الفَجۡرِ
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
1
2
3
وَٱلشَّفْعِ وَٱلْوَتْرِ
وَٱلشَّفْعِwal-shafʿiAnd the evenوَٱلْوَتْرِwal-watriand the odd
And [by] the even [number] and the odd
⤳ Link
89:3
4
وَٱلَّيْلِ إِذَا يَسْرِ
وَٱلَّيْلِwa-al-layliAnd the nightإِذَاidhāwhenيَسْرِyasriit passes
And [by] the night when it passes
⤳ Link
89:4
5
هَلْ فِى ذَٰلِكَ قَسَمٌۭ لِّذِى حِجْرٍ
هَلْhalIsفِىfīinذَٰلِكَdhālikathatقَسَمٌۭqasamun(not) an oathلِّذِىlidhīfor thoseحِجْرٍḥij'rinwho understand
Is there [not] in [all] that an oath [sufficient] for one of perception

89:5
6
أَلَمْ تَرَ كَيْفَ فَعَلَ رَبُّكَ بِعَادٍ
أَلَمْalamDid notتَرَtarayou seeكَيْفَkayfahowفَعَلَfaʿaladealtرَبُّكَrabbukayour Lordبِعَادٍbiʿādinwith Aad
Have you not considered how your Lord dealt with 'Aad

89:6
7
إِرَمَ ذَاتِ ٱلْعِمَادِ
إِرَمَiramaIramذَاتِdhātipossessors (of)ٱلْعِمَادِl-ʿimādilofty pillars
[With] Iram - who had lofty pillars

89:7
8
ٱلَّتِى لَمْ يُخْلَقْ مِثْلُهَا فِى ٱلْبِلَـٰدِ
ٱلَّتِىallatīWhichلَمْlamnotيُخْلَقْyukh'laqhad been createdمِثْلُهَاmith'luhālike themفِىfīinٱلْبِلَـٰدِl-bilādithe cities
The likes of whom had never been created in the land

89:8
9
وَثَمُودَ ٱلَّذِينَ جَابُوا۟ ٱلصَّخْرَ بِٱلْوَادِ
وَثَمُودَwathamūdaAnd Thamudٱلَّذِينَalladhīnawhoجَابُوا۟jābūcarved outٱلصَّخْرَl-ṣakhrathe rocksبِٱلْوَادِbil-wādiin the valley
And [with] Thamud, who carved out the rocks in the valley

89:9
10
وَفِرْعَوْنَ ذِى ٱلْأَوْتَادِ
وَفِرْعَوْنَwafir'ʿawnaAnd Firaunذِىdhīowner ofٱلْأَوْتَادِl-awtādistakes
And [with] Pharaoh, owner of the stakes

89:10
11
ٱلَّذِينَ طَغَوْا۟ فِى ٱلْبِلَـٰدِ
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnaWhoطَغَوْا۟ṭaghawtransgressedفِىfīinٱلْبِلَـٰدِl-bilādithe lands
[All of] whom oppressed within the lands
⤳ Link
89:11
12
فَأَكْثَرُوا۟ فِيهَا ٱلْفَسَادَ
فَأَكْثَرُوا۟fa-aktharūAnd (made) muchفِيهَاfīhāthereinٱلْفَسَادَl-fasādacorruption
And increased therein the corruption

89:12
13
فَصَبَّ عَلَيْهِمْ رَبُّكَ سَوْطَ عَذَابٍ
فَصَبَّfaṣabbaSo pouredعَلَيْهِمْʿalayhimon themرَبُّكَrabbukayour Lordسَوْطَsawṭascourgeعَذَابٍʿadhābin(of) punishment
So your Lord poured upon them a scourge of punishment

89:13
14
إِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَبِٱلْمِرْصَادِ
إِنَّinnaIndeedرَبَّكَrabbakayour Lordلَبِٱلْمِرْصَادِlabil-mir'ṣādi(is) surely Ever Watchful
Indeed, your Lord is in observation

89:14
15
فَأَمَّا ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ إِذَا مَا ٱبْتَلَىٰهُ رَبُّهُۥ فَأَكْرَمَهُۥ وَنَعَّمَهُۥ فَيَقُولُ رَبِّىٓ أَكْرَمَنِ
فَأَمَّاfa-ammāAnd as forٱلْإِنسَـٰنُl-insānumanإِذَاidhāwhenمَاmādoesٱبْتَلَىٰهُib'talāhutry himرَبُّهُۥrabbuhuhis Lordفَأَكْرَمَهُۥfa-akramahuand is generous to himوَنَعَّمَهُۥwanaʿʿamahuand favors himفَيَقُولُfayaqūluhe saysرَبِّىٓrabbīMy Lordأَكْرَمَنِakramanihas honored me
And as for man, when his Lord tries him and [thus] is generous to him and favors him, he says, "My Lord has honored me

89:15
16
وَأَمَّآ إِذَا مَا ٱبْتَلَىٰهُ فَقَدَرَ عَلَيْهِ رِزْقَهُۥ فَيَقُولُ رَبِّىٓ أَهَـٰنَنِ
وَأَمَّآwa-ammāButإِذَاidhāwhenمَاmādoesٱبْتَلَىٰهُib'talāhuHe try himفَقَدَرَfaqadaraand restrictsعَلَيْهِʿalayhifor himرِزْقَهُۥriz'qahuhis provisionفَيَقُولُfayaqūluthen he saysرَبِّىٓrabbīMy Lordأَهَـٰنَنِahānani(has) humiliated me
But when He tries him and restricts his provision, he says, "My Lord has humiliated me

89:16
17
كَلَّا ۖ بَل لَّا تُكْرِمُونَ ٱلْيَتِيمَ
كَلَّا ۖkallāNayبَلbalButلَّاlānotتُكْرِمُونَtuk'rimūnayou honorٱلْيَتِيمَl-yatīmathe orphan
No! But you do not honor the orphan

89:17
18
وَلَا تَحَـٰٓضُّونَ عَلَىٰ طَعَامِ ٱلْمِسْكِينِ
وَلَاwalāAnd notتَحَـٰٓضُّونَtaḥāḍḍūnayou feel the urgeعَلَىٰʿalātoطَعَامِṭaʿāmifeedٱلْمِسْكِينِl-mis'kīnithe poor
And you do not encourage one another to feed the poor

89:18
19
وَتَأْكُلُونَ ٱلتُّرَاثَ أَكْلًۭا لَّمًّۭا
وَتَأْكُلُونَwatakulūnaAnd you consumeٱلتُّرَاثَl-turāthathe inheritanceأَكْلًۭاaklandevouringلَّمًّۭاlammanaltogether
And you consume inheritance, devouring [it] altogether

89:19
20
وَتُحِبُّونَ ٱلْمَالَ حُبًّۭا جَمًّۭا
وَتُحِبُّونَwatuḥibbūnaAnd you loveٱلْمَالَl-mālawealthحُبًّۭاḥubban(with) loveجَمًّۭاjammanimmense
And you love wealth with immense love

89:20
21
كَلَّآ إِذَا دُكَّتِ ٱلْأَرْضُ دَكًّۭا دَكًّۭا
كَلَّآkallāNayإِذَاidhāWhenدُكَّتِdukkatiis leveledٱلْأَرْضُl-arḍuthe earthدَكًّۭاdakkanpoundedدَكًّۭاdakkan(and) crushed
No! When the earth has been leveled - pounded and crushed

89:21
22
وَجَآءَ رَبُّكَ وَٱلْمَلَكُ صَفًّۭا صَفًّۭا
وَجَآءَwajāaAnd comesرَبُّكَrabbukayour Lordوَٱلْمَلَكُwal-malakuand the Angelsصَفًّۭاṣaffanrankصَفًّۭاṣaffan(upon) rank
And your Lord has come and the angels, rank upon rank

89:22
23
وَجِا۟ىٓءَ يَوْمَئِذٍۭ بِجَهَنَّمَ ۚ يَوْمَئِذٍۢ يَتَذَكَّرُ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ وَأَنَّىٰ لَهُ ٱلذِّكْرَىٰ
وَجِا۟ىٓءَwajīaAnd is broughtيَوْمَئِذٍۭyawma-idhinthat Dayبِجَهَنَّمَ ۚbijahannamaHellيَوْمَئِذٍۢyawma-idhinThat Dayيَتَذَكَّرُyatadhakkaruwill rememberٱلْإِنسَـٰنُl-insānumanوَأَنَّىٰwa-annābut howلَهُlahu(will be) for himٱلذِّكْرَىٰl-dhik'rāthe remembrance
And brought [within view], that Day, is Hell - that Day, man will remember, but what good to him will be the remembrance

89:23
24
يَقُولُ يَـٰلَيْتَنِى قَدَّمْتُ لِحَيَاتِى
يَقُولُyaqūluHe will sayيَـٰلَيْتَنِىyālaytanīO I wishقَدَّمْتُqaddamtuI had sent forthلِحَيَاتِىliḥayātīfor my life
He will say, "Oh, I wish I had sent ahead [some good] for my life

89:24
25
فَيَوْمَئِذٍۢ لَّا يُعَذِّبُ عَذَابَهُۥٓ أَحَدٌۭ
فَيَوْمَئِذٍۢfayawma-idhinSo that Dayلَّاlānotيُعَذِّبُyuʿadhibuwill punishعَذَابَهُۥٓʿadhābahu(as) His punishmentأَحَدٌۭaḥadunanyone
So on that Day, none will punish [as severely] as His punishment

89:25
26
وَلَا يُوثِقُ وَثَاقَهُۥٓ أَحَدٌۭ
وَلَاwalāAnd notيُوثِقُyūthiquwill bindوَثَاقَهُۥٓwathāqahu(as) His bindingأَحَدٌۭaḥadunanyone
And none will bind [as severely] as His binding [of the evildoers]

89:26
27
يَـٰٓأَيَّتُهَا ٱلنَّفْسُ ٱلْمُطْمَئِنَّةُ
يَـٰٓأَيَّتُهَاyāayyatuhāOٱلنَّفْسُl-nafsusoulٱلْمُطْمَئِنَّةُl-muṭ'ma-inatuwho is satisfied
[To the righteous it will be said], "O reassured soul

89:27
28
ٱرْجِعِىٓ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكِ رَاضِيَةًۭ مَّرْضِيَّةًۭ
ٱرْجِعِىٓir'jiʿīReturnإِلَىٰilātoرَبِّكِrabbikiyour Lordرَاضِيَةًۭrāḍiyatanwell pleasedمَّرْضِيَّةًۭmarḍiyyatanand pleasing
Return to your Lord, well-pleased and pleasing [to Him]

89:28
29
فَٱدْخُلِى فِى عِبَـٰدِى
فَٱدْخُلِىfa-ud'khulīSo enterفِىfīamongعِبَـٰدِىʿibādīMy slaves
And enter among My [righteous] servants
⤳ Link
89:29
30
وَٱدْخُلِى جَنَّتِى
وَٱدْخُلِىwa-ud'khulīAnd enterجَنَّتِىjannatīMy Paradise
And enter My Paradise
