Surah 90 of 114 · Makki
سُورَةُ البَلَدِ
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
1
لَآ أُقْسِمُ بِهَـٰذَا ٱلْبَلَدِ
لَآlāNayأُقْسِمُuq'simuI swearبِهَـٰذَاbihādhāby thisٱلْبَلَدِl-baladicity
I swear by this city, Makkah
⤳ Link
90:1
2
وَأَنتَ حِلٌّۢ بِهَـٰذَا ٱلْبَلَدِ
وَأَنتَwa-antaAnd youحِلٌّۢḥillun(are) free (to dwell)بِهَـٰذَاbihādhāin thisٱلْبَلَدِl-baladicity
And you, [O Muhammad], are free of restriction in this city

90:2
3
وَوَالِدٍۢ وَمَا وَلَدَ
وَوَالِدٍۢwawālidinAnd the begetterوَمَاwamāand whatوَلَدَwaladahe begot
And [by] the father and that which was born [of him]

90:3
4
لَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ فِى كَبَدٍ
لَقَدْlaqadCertainlyخَلَقْنَاkhalaqnāWe have createdٱلْإِنسَـٰنَl-insānamanفِىfī(to be) inكَبَدٍkabadinhardship
We have certainly created man into hardship

90:4
5
أَيَحْسَبُ أَن لَّن يَقْدِرَ عَلَيْهِ أَحَدٌۭ
أَيَحْسَبُayaḥsabuDoes he thinkأَنanthatلَّنlannotيَقْدِرَyaqdirahas powerعَلَيْهِʿalayhiover himأَحَدٌۭaḥadunanyone
Does he think that never will anyone overcome him

6
يَقُولُ أَهْلَكْتُ مَالًۭا لُّبَدًا
يَقُولُyaqūluHe will sayأَهْلَكْتُahlaktuI have squanderedمَالًۭاmālanwealthلُّبَدًاlubadanabundant
He says, "I have spent wealth in abundance

7
أَيَحْسَبُ أَن لَّمْ يَرَهُۥٓ أَحَدٌ
أَيَحْسَبُayaḥsabuDoes he thinkأَنanthatلَّمْlamnotيَرَهُۥٓyarahusees himأَحَدٌaḥadunanyone
Does he think that no one has seen him

8
أَلَمْ نَجْعَل لَّهُۥ عَيْنَيْنِ
أَلَمْalamHave notنَجْعَلnajʿalWe madeلَّهُۥlahufor himعَيْنَيْنِʿaynaynitwo eyes
Have We not made for him two eyes

9
وَلِسَانًۭا وَشَفَتَيْنِ
وَلِسَانًۭاwalisānanAnd a tongueوَشَفَتَيْنِwashafatayniand two lips
And a tongue and two lips
⤳ Link
90:9
10
وَهَدَيْنَـٰهُ ٱلنَّجْدَيْنِ
وَهَدَيْنَـٰهُwahadaynāhuAnd shown himٱلنَّجْدَيْنِl-najdaynithe two ways
And have shown him the two ways

90:10
11
فَلَا ٱقْتَحَمَ ٱلْعَقَبَةَ
فَلَاfalāBut notٱقْتَحَمَiq'taḥamahe has attemptedٱلْعَقَبَةَl-ʿaqabatathe steep path
But he has not broken through the difficult pass

90:11
12
وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا ٱلْعَقَبَةُ
وَمَآwamāAnd whatأَدْرَىٰكَadrākacan make you knowمَاmāwhatٱلْعَقَبَةُl-ʿaqabatuthe steep path (is)
And what can make you know what is [breaking through] the difficult pass

90:12
13
فَكُّ رَقَبَةٍ
فَكُّfakku(It is) freeingرَقَبَةٍraqabatina neck
It is the freeing of a slave

14
أَوْ إِطْعَـٰمٌۭ فِى يَوْمٍۢ ذِى مَسْغَبَةٍۢ
أَوْawOrإِطْعَـٰمٌۭiṭ'ʿāmunfeedingفِىfīinيَوْمٍۢyawmina dayذِىdhīofمَسْغَبَةٍۢmasghabatinsevere hunger
Or feeding on a day of severe hunger

15
يَتِيمًۭا ذَا مَقْرَبَةٍ
يَتِيمًۭاyatīmanAn orphanذَاdhāofمَقْرَبَةٍmaqrabatinnear relationship
An orphan of near relationship

90:15
16
أَوْ مِسْكِينًۭا ذَا مَتْرَبَةٍۢ
أَوْawOrمِسْكِينًۭاmis'kīnana needy personذَاdhāinمَتْرَبَةٍۢmatrabatinmisery
Or a needy person in misery

90:16
17
ثُمَّ كَانَ مِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَتَوَاصَوْا۟ بِٱلصَّبْرِ وَتَوَاصَوْا۟ بِٱلْمَرْحَمَةِ
ثُمَّthummaThenكَانَkānahe isمِنَminaofٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose whoءَامَنُوا۟āmanūbelieveوَتَوَاصَوْا۟watawāṣawand enjoin (each other)بِٱلصَّبْرِbil-ṣabrito patienceوَتَوَاصَوْا۟watawāṣawand enjoin (each other)بِٱلْمَرْحَمَةِbil-marḥamatito compassion
And then being among those who believed and advised one another to patience and advised one another to compassion

90:17
18
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْمَيْمَنَةِ
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَulāikaThoseأَصْحَـٰبُaṣḥābu(are the) companionsٱلْمَيْمَنَةِl-maymanati(of) the right (hand)
Those are the companions of the right

90:18
19
وَٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا هُمْ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْمَشْـَٔمَةِ
وَٱلَّذِينَwa-alladhīnaBut those whoكَفَرُوا۟kafarūdisbelieveبِـَٔايَـٰتِنَاbiāyātināin Our Versesهُمْhumtheyأَصْحَـٰبُaṣḥābu(are the) companionsٱلْمَشْـَٔمَةِl-mashamati(of) the left (hand)
But they who disbelieved in Our signs - those are the companions of the left

20
عَلَيْهِمْ نَارٌۭ مُّؤْصَدَةٌۢ
عَلَيْهِمْʿalayhimOver themنَارٌۭnārun(will be the) Fireمُّؤْصَدَةٌۢmu'ṣadatunclosed in
Over them will be fire closed in
