Surah 91 of 114 · Makki
سُورَةُ الشَّمۡسِ
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
1
وَٱلشَّمْسِ وَضُحَىٰهَا
وَٱلشَّمْسِwal-shamsiBy the sunوَضُحَىٰهَاwaḍuḥāhāand its brightness
By the sun and its brightness
⤳ Link
91:1
2
وَٱلْقَمَرِ إِذَا تَلَىٰهَا
وَٱلْقَمَرِwal-qamariAnd the moonإِذَاidhāwhenتَلَىٰهَاtalāhāit follows it
And [by] the moon when it follows it
⤳ Link
91:2
3
وَٱلنَّهَارِ إِذَا جَلَّىٰهَا
وَٱلنَّهَارِwal-nahāriAnd the dayإِذَاidhāwhenجَلَّىٰهَاjallāhāit displays it
And [by] the day when it displays it
⤳ Link
91:3
4
وَٱلَّيْلِ إِذَا يَغْشَىٰهَا
وَٱلَّيْلِwa-al-layliAnd the nightإِذَاidhāwhenيَغْشَىٰهَاyaghshāhāit covers it
And [by] the night when it covers it
⤳ Link
91:4
5
وَٱلسَّمَآءِ وَمَا بَنَىٰهَا
وَٱلسَّمَآءِwal-samāiAnd the heavenوَمَاwamāand (He) Whoبَنَىٰهَاbanāhāconstructed it
And [by] the sky and He who constructed it

91:5
6
وَٱلْأَرْضِ وَمَا طَحَىٰهَا
وَٱلْأَرْضِwal-arḍiAnd the earthوَمَاwamāand by (He) Whoطَحَىٰهَاṭaḥāhāspread it
And [by] the earth and He who spread it
⤳ Link
91:6
7
وَنَفْسٍۢ وَمَا سَوَّىٰهَا
وَنَفْسٍۢwanafsinAnd (the) soulوَمَاwamāand (He) Whoسَوَّىٰهَاsawwāhāproportioned it
And [by] the soul and He who proportioned it

91:7
8
فَأَلْهَمَهَا فُجُورَهَا وَتَقْوَىٰهَا
فَأَلْهَمَهَاfa-alhamahāAnd He inspired itفُجُورَهَاfujūrahā(to distinguish) its wickednessوَتَقْوَىٰهَاwataqwāhāand its righteousness
And inspired it [with discernment of] its wickedness and its righteousness

91:8
9
قَدْ أَفْلَحَ مَن زَكَّىٰهَا
قَدْqadIndeedأَفْلَحَaflaḥahe succeedsمَنmanwhoزَكَّىٰهَاzakkāhāpurifies it
He has succeeded who purifies it
⤳ Link
91:9
10
وَقَدْ خَابَ مَن دَسَّىٰهَا
وَقَدْwaqadAnd indeedخَابَkhābahe failsمَنmanwhoدَسَّىٰهَاdassāhāburies it
And he has failed who instills it [with corruption]

91:10
11
كَذَّبَتْ ثَمُودُ بِطَغْوَىٰهَآ
كَذَّبَتْkadhabatDeniedثَمُودُthamūduThamudبِطَغْوَىٰهَآbiṭaghwāhāby their transgression
Thamud denied [their prophet] by reason of their transgression

91:11
12
إِذِ ٱنۢبَعَثَ أَشْقَىٰهَا
إِذِidhiWhenٱنۢبَعَثَinbaʿatha(was) sent forthأَشْقَىٰهَاashqāhā(the) most wicked of them
When the most wretched of them was sent forth

91:12
13
فَقَالَ لَهُمْ رَسُولُ ٱللَّهِ نَاقَةَ ٱللَّهِ وَسُقْيَـٰهَا
فَقَالَfaqālaBut saidلَهُمْlahumto themرَسُولُrasūlu(the) Messengerٱللَّهِl-lahi(of) Allahنَاقَةَnāqata(It is the) she-camelٱللَّهِl-lahi(of) Allahوَسُقْيَـٰهَاwasuq'yāhāand her drink
And the messenger of Allah [Salih] said to them, "[Do not harm] the she-camel of Allah or [prevent her from] her drink

91:13
14
فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَعَقَرُوهَا فَدَمْدَمَ عَلَيْهِمْ رَبُّهُم بِذَنۢبِهِمْ فَسَوَّىٰهَا
فَكَذَّبُوهُfakadhabūhuBut they denied himفَعَقَرُوهَاfaʿaqarūhāand they hamstrung herفَدَمْدَمَfadamdamaSo destroyedعَلَيْهِمْʿalayhimthemرَبُّهُمrabbuhumtheir Lordبِذَنۢبِهِمْbidhanbihimfor their sinفَسَوَّىٰهَاfasawwāhāand leveled them
But they denied him and hamstrung her. So their Lord brought down upon them destruction for their sin and made it equal [upon all of them]

91:14
15
وَلَا يَخَافُ عُقْبَـٰهَا
وَلَاwalāAnd notيَخَافُyakhāfuHe fearsعُقْبَـٰهَاʿuq'bāhāits consequences
And He does not fear the consequence thereof
