Surah 88 of 114 · Makki
سُورَةُ الغَاشِيَةِ
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
1
هَلْ أَتَىٰكَ حَدِيثُ ٱلْغَـٰشِيَةِ
هَلْhalHasأَتَىٰكَatāka(there) come to youحَدِيثُḥadīthu(the) newsٱلْغَـٰشِيَةِl-ghāshiyati(of) the Overwhelming
Has there reached you the report of the Overwhelming [event]

88:1
2
وُجُوهٌۭ يَوْمَئِذٍ خَـٰشِعَةٌ
وُجُوهٌۭwujūhunFacesيَوْمَئِذٍyawma-idhinthat Dayخَـٰشِعَةٌkhāshiʿatun(will be) humbled
[Some] faces, that Day, will be humbled

88:2
3
عَامِلَةٌۭ نَّاصِبَةٌۭ
عَامِلَةٌۭʿāmilatunLaboringنَّاصِبَةٌۭnāṣibatunexhausted
Working [hard] and exhausted
⤳ Link
88:3
4
تَصْلَىٰ نَارًا حَامِيَةًۭ
تَصْلَىٰtaṣlāThey will burnنَارًاnāran(in) a Fireحَامِيَةًۭḥāmiyatanintensely hot
They will [enter to] burn in an intensely hot Fire

88:4
5
تُسْقَىٰ مِنْ عَيْنٍ ءَانِيَةٍۢ
تُسْقَىٰtus'qāThey will be given to drinkمِنْminfromعَيْنٍʿaynina springءَانِيَةٍۢāniyatinboiling
They will be given drink from a boiling spring

6
لَّيْسَ لَهُمْ طَعَامٌ إِلَّا مِن ضَرِيعٍۢ
لَّيْسَlaysaNot isلَهُمْlahumfor themطَعَامٌṭaʿāmunfoodإِلَّاillāexceptمِنminfromضَرِيعٍۢḍarīʿina bitter thorny plant
For them there will be no food except from a poisonous, thorny plant

7
لَّا يُسْمِنُ وَلَا يُغْنِى مِن جُوعٍۢ
لَّاlāNotيُسْمِنُyus'minuit nourishesوَلَاwalāand notيُغْنِىyugh'nīit availsمِنminfromجُوعٍۢjūʿinhunger
Which neither nourishes nor avails against hunger

88:7
8
وُجُوهٌۭ يَوْمَئِذٍۢ نَّاعِمَةٌۭ
وُجُوهٌۭwujūhunFacesيَوْمَئِذٍۢyawma-idhinthat Dayنَّاعِمَةٌۭnāʿimatun(will be) joyful
[Other] faces, that Day, will show pleasure

9
لِّسَعْيِهَا رَاضِيَةٌۭ
لِّسَعْيِهَاlisaʿyihāWith their effortرَاضِيَةٌۭrāḍiyatunsatisfied
With their effort [they are] satisfied

88:9
10
فِى جَنَّةٍ عَالِيَةٍۢ
فِىfīInجَنَّةٍjannatina gardenعَالِيَةٍۢʿāliyatinelevated
In an elevated garden
⤳ Link
88:10
11
لَّا تَسْمَعُ فِيهَا لَـٰغِيَةًۭ
لَّاlāNotتَسْمَعُtasmaʿuthey will hearفِيهَاfīhāthereinلَـٰغِيَةًۭlāghiyatanvain talk
Wherein they will hear no unsuitable speech

88:11
12
فِيهَا عَيْنٌۭ جَارِيَةٌۭ
فِيهَاfīhāThereinعَيْنٌۭʿaynun(will be) a springجَارِيَةٌۭjāriyatunflowing
Within it is a flowing spring

88:12
13
فِيهَا سُرُرٌۭ مَّرْفُوعَةٌۭ
فِيهَاfīhāThereinسُرُرٌۭsururun(will be) thronesمَّرْفُوعَةٌۭmarfūʿatunraised high
Within it are couches raised high

88:13
14
وَأَكْوَابٌۭ مَّوْضُوعَةٌۭ
وَأَكْوَابٌۭwa-akwābunAnd cupsمَّوْضُوعَةٌۭmawḍūʿatunput in place
And cups put in place

88:14
15
وَنَمَارِقُ مَصْفُوفَةٌۭ
وَنَمَارِقُwanamāriquAnd cushionsمَصْفُوفَةٌۭmaṣfūfatunlined up
And cushions lined up
⤳ Link
88:15
16
وَزَرَابِىُّ مَبْثُوثَةٌ
وَزَرَابِىُّwazarābiyyuAnd carpetsمَبْثُوثَةٌmabthūthatunspread out
And carpets spread around
⤳ Link
88:16
17
أَفَلَا يَنظُرُونَ إِلَى ٱلْإِبِلِ كَيْفَ خُلِقَتْ
أَفَلَاafalāThen do notيَنظُرُونَyanẓurūnathey lookإِلَىilātowardsٱلْإِبِلِl-ibilithe camelsكَيْفَkayfahowخُلِقَتْkhuliqatthey are created
Then do they not look at the camels - how they are created

88:17
18
وَإِلَى ٱلسَّمَآءِ كَيْفَ رُفِعَتْ
وَإِلَىwa-ilāAnd towardsٱلسَّمَآءِl-samāithe skyكَيْفَkayfahowرُفِعَتْrufiʿatit is raised
And at the sky - how it is raised

88:18
19
وَإِلَى ٱلْجِبَالِ كَيْفَ نُصِبَتْ
وَإِلَىwa-ilāAnd towardsٱلْجِبَالِl-jibālithe mountainsكَيْفَkayfahowنُصِبَتْnuṣibatthey are fixed
And at the mountains - how they are erected

20
وَإِلَى ٱلْأَرْضِ كَيْفَ سُطِحَتْ
وَإِلَىwa-ilāAnd towardsٱلْأَرْضِl-arḍithe earthكَيْفَkayfahowسُطِحَتْsuṭiḥatit is spread out
And at the earth - how it is spread out
⤳ Link
88:20
21
فَذَكِّرْ إِنَّمَآ أَنتَ مُذَكِّرٌۭ
فَذَكِّرْfadhakkirSo remindإِنَّمَآinnamāonlyأَنتَantayouمُذَكِّرٌۭmudhakkirun(are) a reminder
So remind, [O Muhammad]; you are only a reminder

88:21
22
لَّسْتَ عَلَيْهِم بِمُصَيْطِرٍ
لَّسْتَlastaYou are notعَلَيْهِمʿalayhimover themبِمُصَيْطِرٍbimuṣayṭirina controller
You are not over them a controller

88:22
23
إِلَّا مَن تَوَلَّىٰ وَكَفَرَ
إِلَّاillāButمَنmanwhoeverتَوَلَّىٰtawallāturns awayوَكَفَرَwakafaraand disbelieves
However, he who turns away and disbelieves
⤳ Link
88:23
24
فَيُعَذِّبُهُ ٱللَّهُ ٱلْعَذَابَ ٱلْأَكْبَرَ
فَيُعَذِّبُهُfayuʿadhibuhuThen will punish himٱللَّهُl-lahuAllahٱلْعَذَابَl-ʿadhāba(with) the punishmentٱلْأَكْبَرَl-akbaragreatest
Then Allah will punish him with the greatest punishment

88:24
25
إِنَّ إِلَيْنَآ إِيَابَهُمْ
إِنَّinnaIndeedإِلَيْنَآilaynāto Usإِيَابَهُمْiyābahum(will be) their return
Indeed, to Us is their return
⤳ Link
88:25
26
ثُمَّ إِنَّ عَلَيْنَا حِسَابَهُم
ثُمَّthummaThenإِنَّinnaindeedعَلَيْنَاʿalaynāupon Usحِسَابَهُمḥisābahum(is) their account
Then indeed, upon Us is their account
