Surah 74 of 114 · Makki
سُورَةُ المُدَّثِّرِ
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
1
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلْمُدَّثِّرُ
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَاyāayyuhāO youٱلْمُدَّثِّرُl-mudathiruwho covers himself
O you who covers himself [with a garment]
⤳ Link
74:1
2
3
وَرَبَّكَ فَكَبِّرْ
وَرَبَّكَwarabbakaAnd your Lordفَكَبِّرْfakabbirmagnify
And your Lord glorify

74:3
4
وَثِيَابَكَ فَطَهِّرْ
وَثِيَابَكَwathiyābakaAnd your clothingفَطَهِّرْfaṭahhirpurify
And your clothing purify
⤳ Link
74:4
5
وَٱلرُّجْزَ فَٱهْجُرْ
وَٱلرُّجْزَwal-ruj'zaAnd uncleanlinessفَٱهْجُرْfa-uh'juravoid
And uncleanliness avoid
⤳ Link
74:5
6
وَلَا تَمْنُن تَسْتَكْثِرُ
وَلَاwalāAnd (do) notتَمْنُنtamnunconfer favorتَسْتَكْثِرُtastakthiru(to) acquire more
And do not confer favor to acquire more

74:6
7
وَلِرَبِّكَ فَٱصْبِرْ
وَلِرَبِّكَwalirabbikaAnd for your Lordفَٱصْبِرْfa-iṣ'birbe patient
But for your Lord be patient

74:7
8
فَإِذَا نُقِرَ فِى ٱلنَّاقُورِ
فَإِذَاfa-idhāThen whenنُقِرَnuqirais blownفِىfīinٱلنَّاقُورِl-nāqūrithe trumpet
And when the trumpet is blown
⤳ Link
74:8
9
فَذَٰلِكَ يَوْمَئِذٍۢ يَوْمٌ عَسِيرٌ
فَذَٰلِكَfadhālikaThatيَوْمَئِذٍۢyawma-idhinDayيَوْمٌyawmun(will be) a Dayعَسِيرٌʿasīrundifficult
That Day will be a difficult day

10
عَلَى ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ غَيْرُ يَسِيرٍۢ
عَلَىʿalāForٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَl-kāfirīnathe disbelievers غَيْرُghayrunotيَسِيرٍۢyasīrineasy
For the disbelievers - not easy
⤳ Link
74:10
11
ذَرْنِى وَمَنْ خَلَقْتُ وَحِيدًۭا
ذَرْنِىdharnīLeave Meوَمَنْwamanand whomخَلَقْتُkhalaqtuI createdوَحِيدًۭاwaḥīdanalone
Leave Me with the one I created alone

74:11
12
وَجَعَلْتُ لَهُۥ مَالًۭا مَّمْدُودًۭا
وَجَعَلْتُwajaʿaltuAnd I grantedلَهُۥlahuto himمَالًۭاmālanwealthمَّمْدُودًۭاmamdūdanextensive
And to whom I granted extensive wealth

74:12
13
وَبَنِينَ شُهُودًۭا
وَبَنِينَwabanīnaAnd childrenشُهُودًۭاshuhūdanpresent
And children present [with him]
⤳ Link
74:13
14
وَمَهَّدتُّ لَهُۥ تَمْهِيدًۭا
وَمَهَّدتُّwamahhadttuAnd I spreadلَهُۥlahufor himتَمْهِيدًۭاtamhīdanease
And spread [everything] before him, easing [his life]

74:14
15
ثُمَّ يَطْمَعُ أَنْ أَزِيدَ
ثُمَّthummaThenيَطْمَعُyaṭmaʿuhe desiresأَنْanthatأَزِيدَazīdaI (should) add more
Then he desires that I should add more

74:15
16
كَلَّآ ۖ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ لِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا عَنِيدًۭا
كَلَّآ ۖkallāBy no meansإِنَّهُۥinnahuIndeed, heكَانَkānahas beenلِـَٔايَـٰتِنَاliāyātināto Our Versesعَنِيدًۭاʿanīdanstubborn
No! Indeed, he has been toward Our verses obstinate

17
سَأُرْهِقُهُۥ صَعُودًا
سَأُرْهِقُهُۥsa-ur'hiquhuSoon I will cover Himصَعُودًاṣaʿūdan(with) a laborious punishment
I will cover him with arduous torment

74:17
18
إِنَّهُۥ فَكَّرَ وَقَدَّرَ
إِنَّهُۥinnahuIndeed, heفَكَّرَfakkarathoughtوَقَدَّرَwaqaddaraand plotted
Indeed, he thought and deliberated

74:18
19
فَقُتِلَ كَيْفَ قَدَّرَ
فَقُتِلَfaqutilaSo may he be destroyedكَيْفَkayfahowقَدَّرَqaddarahe plotted
So may he be destroyed [for] how he deliberated

74:19
20
ثُمَّ قُتِلَ كَيْفَ قَدَّرَ
ثُمَّthummaThenقُتِلَqutilamay he be destroyedكَيْفَkayfahowقَدَّرَqaddarahe plotted
Then may he be destroyed [for] how he deliberated

21
22
ثُمَّ عَبَسَ وَبَسَرَ
ثُمَّthummaThenعَبَسَʿabasahe frownedوَبَسَرَwabasaraand scowled
Then he frowned and scowled
⤳ Link
74:22
23
ثُمَّ أَدْبَرَ وَٱسْتَكْبَرَ
ثُمَّthummaThenأَدْبَرَadbarahe turned backوَٱسْتَكْبَرَwa-is'takbaraand was proud
Then he turned back and was arrogant

74:23
24
فَقَالَ إِنْ هَـٰذَآ إِلَّا سِحْرٌۭ يُؤْثَرُ
فَقَالَfaqālaThen he saidإِنْinNotهَـٰذَآhādhā(is) thisإِلَّاillābutسِحْرٌۭsiḥ'runmagicيُؤْثَرُyu'tharuimitated
And said, "This is not but magic imitated [from others]

74:24
25
إِنْ هَـٰذَآ إِلَّا قَوْلُ ٱلْبَشَرِ
إِنْinNotهَـٰذَآhādhā(is) thisإِلَّاillābutقَوْلُqawlu(the) wordٱلْبَشَرِl-bashari(of) a human being
This is not but the word of a human being

74:25
26
سَأُصْلِيهِ سَقَرَ
سَأُصْلِيهِsa-uṣ'līhiSoon I will drive himسَقَرَsaqara(into) Hell
I will drive him into Saqar

74:26
27
وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا سَقَرُ
وَمَآwamāAnd whatأَدْرَىٰكَadrākacan make you knowمَاmāwhatسَقَرُsaqaru(is) Hell
And what can make you know what is Saqar

74:27
28
لَا تُبْقِى وَلَا تَذَرُ
لَاlāNotتُبْقِىtub'qīit lets remainوَلَاwalāand notتَذَرُtadharuit leaves
It lets nothing remain and leaves nothing [unburned]

29
لَوَّاحَةٌۭ لِّلْبَشَرِ
لَوَّاحَةٌۭlawwāḥatunScorchingلِّلْبَشَرِlil'basharithe human (skin)
Blackening the skins
⤳ Link
74:29
30
عَلَيْهَا تِسْعَةَ عَشَرَ
عَلَيْهَاʿalayhāOver itتِسْعَةَtis'ʿata(are) nineعَشَرَʿasharateen
Over it are nineteen [angels]

31
وَمَا جَعَلْنَآ أَصْحَـٰبَ ٱلنَّارِ إِلَّا مَلَـٰٓئِكَةًۭ ۙ وَمَا جَعَلْنَا عِدَّتَهُمْ إِلَّا فِتْنَةًۭ لِّلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ لِيَسْتَيْقِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ وَيَزْدَادَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓا۟ إِيمَـٰنًۭا ۙ وَلَا يَرْتَابَ ٱلَّذِينَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ وَٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ ۙ وَلِيَقُولَ ٱلَّذِينَ فِى قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضٌۭ وَٱلْكَـٰفِرُونَ مَاذَآ أَرَادَ ٱللَّهُ بِهَـٰذَا مَثَلًۭا ۚ كَذَٰلِكَ يُضِلُّ ٱللَّهُ مَن يَشَآءُ وَيَهْدِى مَن يَشَآءُ ۚ وَمَا يَعْلَمُ جُنُودَ رَبِّكَ إِلَّا هُوَ ۚ وَمَا هِىَ إِلَّا ذِكْرَىٰ لِلْبَشَرِ
وَمَاwamāAnd notجَعَلْنَآjaʿalnāWe have madeأَصْحَـٰبَaṣḥābakeepersٱلنَّارِl-nāri(of) the Fireإِلَّاillāexceptمَلَـٰٓئِكَةًۭ ۙmalāikatanAngelsوَمَاwamāAnd notجَعَلْنَاjaʿalnāWe have madeعِدَّتَهُمْʿiddatahumtheir numberإِلَّاillāexceptفِتْنَةًۭfit'natan(as) a trialلِّلَّذِينَlilladhīnafor those whoكَفَرُوا۟kafarūdisbelieve لِيَسْتَيْقِنَliyastayqinathat may be certainٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose whoأُوتُوا۟ūtūwere givenٱلْكِتَـٰبَl-kitābathe Scriptureوَيَزْدَادَwayazdādaand may increaseٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose whoءَامَنُوٓا۟āmanūbelieveإِيمَـٰنًۭا ۙīmānan(in) faithوَلَاwalāand notيَرْتَابَyartābamay doubtٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose whoأُوتُوا۟ūtūwere givenٱلْكِتَـٰبَl-kitābathe Scriptureوَٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ ۙwal-mu'minūnaand the believersوَلِيَقُولَwaliyaqūlaand that may sayٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathoseفِىfīinقُلُوبِهِمqulūbihimtheir heartsمَّرَضٌۭmaraḍun(is) a diseaseوَٱلْكَـٰفِرُونَwal-kāfirūnaand the disbelieversمَاذَآmādhāWhatأَرَادَarāda(does) intendٱللَّهُl-lahuAllahبِهَـٰذَاbihādhāby thisمَثَلًۭا ۚmathalanexampleكَذَٰلِكَkadhālikaThusيُضِلُّyuḍilludoes let go astrayٱللَّهُl-lahuAllahمَنmanwhomيَشَآءُyashāuHe willsوَيَهْدِىwayahdīand guidesمَنmanwhomيَشَآءُ ۚyashāuHe willsوَمَاwamāAnd noneيَعْلَمُyaʿlamuknowsجُنُودَjunūda(the) hostsرَبِّكَrabbika(of) your Lordإِلَّاillāexceptهُوَ ۚhuwaHimوَمَاwamāAnd notهِىَhiyaitإِلَّاillā(is) butذِكْرَىٰdhik'rāa reminderلِلْبَشَرِlil'basharito (the) human beings
And We have not made the keepers of the Fire except angels. And We have not made their number except as a trial for those who disbelieve - that those who were given the Scripture will be convinced and those who have believed will increase in faith and those who were given the Scripture and the believers will not doubt and that those in whose hearts is hypocrisy and the disbelievers will say, "What does Allah intend by this as an example?" Thus does Allah leave astray whom He wills and guides whom He wills. And none knows the soldiers of your Lord except Him. And mention of the Fire is not but a reminder to humanity

33
وَٱلَّيْلِ إِذْ أَدْبَرَ
وَٱلَّيْلِwa-al-layliAnd the nightإِذْidhwhenأَدْبَرَadbarait departs
And [by] the night when it departs
⤳ Link
74:33
34
وَٱلصُّبْحِ إِذَآ أَسْفَرَ
وَٱلصُّبْحِwal-ṣub'ḥiAnd the morningإِذَآidhāwhenأَسْفَرَasfarait brightens
And [by] the morning when it brightens
⤳ Link
74:34
35
إِنَّهَا لَإِحْدَى ٱلْكُبَرِ
إِنَّهَاinnahāIndeed, itلَإِحْدَىla-iḥ'dā(is) surely oneٱلْكُبَرِl-kubari(of) the greatest
Indeed, the Fire is of the greatest [afflictions]

36
نَذِيرًۭا لِّلْبَشَرِ
نَذِيرًۭاnadhīranA warningلِّلْبَشَرِlil'basharito (the) human being
As a warning to humanity
⤳ Link
74:36
37
لِمَن شَآءَ مِنكُمْ أَن يَتَقَدَّمَ أَوْ يَتَأَخَّرَ
لِمَنlimanTo whoeverشَآءَshāawillsمِنكُمْminkumamong youأَنantoيَتَقَدَّمَyataqaddamaproceedأَوْaworيَتَأَخَّرَyata-akharastay behind
To whoever wills among you to proceed or stay behind

74:37
38
كُلُّ نَفْسٍۭ بِمَا كَسَبَتْ رَهِينَةٌ
كُلُّkulluEveryنَفْسٍۭnafsinsoulبِمَاbimāfor whatكَسَبَتْkasabatit has earnedرَهِينَةٌrahīnatun(is) pledged
Every soul, for what it has earned, will be retained

74:38
39
إِلَّآ أَصْحَـٰبَ ٱلْيَمِينِ
إِلَّآillāExceptأَصْحَـٰبَaṣḥāba(the) companionsٱلْيَمِينِl-yamīni(of) the right
Except the companions of the right

74:39
40
فِى جَنَّـٰتٍۢ يَتَسَآءَلُونَ
فِىfīInجَنَّـٰتٍۢjannātinGardensيَتَسَآءَلُونَyatasāalūnaasking each other
[Who will be] in gardens, questioning each other
⤳ Link
74:40
41
عَنِ ٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ
عَنِʿaniAboutٱلْمُجْرِمِينَl-muj'rimīnathe criminals
About the criminals
⤳ Link
74:41
42
مَا سَلَكَكُمْ فِى سَقَرَ
مَاmāWhatسَلَكَكُمْsalakakumled youفِىfīintoسَقَرَsaqaraHell
[And asking them], "What put you into Saqar
⤳ Link
74:42
43
قَالُوا۟ لَمْ نَكُ مِنَ ٱلْمُصَلِّينَ
قَالُوا۟qālūThey will sayلَمْlamNotنَكُnakuwe wereمِنَminaofٱلْمُصَلِّينَl-muṣalīnathose who prayed
They will say, "We were not of those who prayed

74:43
44
وَلَمْ نَكُ نُطْعِمُ ٱلْمِسْكِينَ
وَلَمْwalamAnd notنَكُnakuwe used toنُطْعِمُnuṭ'ʿimufeedٱلْمِسْكِينَl-mis'kīnathe poor
Nor did we used to feed the poor

74:44
45
وَكُنَّا نَخُوضُ مَعَ ٱلْخَآئِضِينَ
وَكُنَّاwakunnāAnd we used toنَخُوضُnakhūḍuindulge in vain talkمَعَmaʿawithٱلْخَآئِضِينَl-khāiḍīnathe vain talkers
And we used to enter into vain discourse with those who engaged [in it]

74:45
46
وَكُنَّا نُكَذِّبُ بِيَوْمِ ٱلدِّينِ
وَكُنَّاwakunnāAnd we used toنُكَذِّبُnukadhibudenyبِيَوْمِbiyawmi(the) Dayٱلدِّينِl-dīni(of) the Judgment
And we used to deny the Day of Recompense

74:46
47
حَتَّىٰٓ أَتَىٰنَا ٱلْيَقِينُ
حَتَّىٰٓḥattāUntilأَتَىٰنَاatānācame to usٱلْيَقِينُl-yaqīnuthe certainty
Until there came to us the certainty
⤳ Link
74:47
48
فَمَا تَنفَعُهُمْ شَفَـٰعَةُ ٱلشَّـٰفِعِينَ
فَمَاfamāThen notتَنفَعُهُمْtanfaʿuhumwill benefit themشَفَـٰعَةُshafāʿatuintercessionٱلشَّـٰفِعِينَl-shāfiʿīna(of) the intercessors
So there will not benefit them the intercession of [any] intercessors

74:48
49
فَمَا لَهُمْ عَنِ ٱلتَّذْكِرَةِ مُعْرِضِينَ
فَمَاfamāThen whatلَهُمْlahum(is) for themعَنِʿani(that) fromٱلتَّذْكِرَةِl-tadhkiratithe Reminderمُعْرِضِينَmuʿ'riḍīnathey (are) turning away
Then what is [the matter] with them that they are, from the reminder, turning away

74:49
50
كَأَنَّهُمْ حُمُرٌۭ مُّسْتَنفِرَةٌۭ
كَأَنَّهُمْka-annahumAs if they (were)حُمُرٌۭḥumurundonkeysمُّسْتَنفِرَةٌۭmus'tanfiratunfrightened
As if they were alarmed donkeys

74:50
51
فَرَّتْ مِن قَسْوَرَةٍۭ
فَرَّتْfarratFleeingمِنminfromقَسْوَرَةٍۭqaswaratina lion
Fleeing from a lion
⤳ Link
74:51
52
بَلْ يُرِيدُ كُلُّ ٱمْرِئٍۢ مِّنْهُمْ أَن يُؤْتَىٰ صُحُفًۭا مُّنَشَّرَةًۭ
بَلْbalNayيُرِيدُyurīduDesiresكُلُّkullueveryٱمْرِئٍۢim'ri-inpersonمِّنْهُمْmin'humof themأَنanthatيُؤْتَىٰyu'tāhe may be givenصُحُفًۭاṣuḥufanpagesمُّنَشَّرَةًۭmunasharatanspread out
Rather, every person among them desires that he would be given scriptures spread about

74:52
53
كَلَّا ۖ بَل لَّا يَخَافُونَ ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةَ
كَلَّا ۖkallāNayبَلbalButلَّاlānotيَخَافُونَyakhāfūnathey fearٱلْـَٔاخِرَةَl-ākhiratathe Hereafter
No! But they do not fear the Hereafter

74:53
54
كَلَّآ إِنَّهُۥ تَذْكِرَةٌۭ
كَلَّآkallāNayإِنَّهُۥinnahuIndeed, itتَذْكِرَةٌۭtadhkiratun(is) a Reminder
No! Indeed, the Qur'an is a reminder

74:54
55
فَمَن شَآءَ ذَكَرَهُۥ
فَمَنfamanSo whoeverشَآءَshāawillsذَكَرَهُۥdhakarahu(may) pay heed to it
Then whoever wills will remember it
⤳ Link
74:55
56
وَمَا يَذْكُرُونَ إِلَّآ أَن يَشَآءَ ٱللَّهُ ۚ هُوَ أَهْلُ ٱلتَّقْوَىٰ وَأَهْلُ ٱلْمَغْفِرَةِ
وَمَاwamāAnd notيَذْكُرُونَyadhkurūnawill pay heedإِلَّآillāexceptأَنanthatيَشَآءَyashāawillsٱللَّهُ ۚl-lahuAllahهُوَhuwaHeأَهْلُahlu(is) worthyٱلتَّقْوَىٰl-taqwāto be fearedوَأَهْلُwa-ahluand worthyٱلْمَغْفِرَةِl-maghfiratito forgive
And they will not remember except that Allah wills. He is worthy of fear and adequate for [granting] forgiveness
