Surah 85 of 114 · Makki
سُورَةُ البُرُوجِ
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
1
وَٱلسَّمَآءِ ذَاتِ ٱلْبُرُوجِ
وَٱلسَّمَآءِwal-samāiBy the skyذَاتِdhāticontainingٱلْبُرُوجِl-burūjithe constellations
By the sky containing great stars

85:1
2
وَٱلْيَوْمِ ٱلْمَوْعُودِ
وَٱلْيَوْمِwal-yawmiAnd the Dayٱلْمَوْعُودِl-mawʿūdiPromised
And [by] the promised Day

85:2
3
وَشَاهِدٍۢ وَمَشْهُودٍۢ
وَشَاهِدٍۢwashāhidinAnd (the) witnessوَمَشْهُودٍۢwamashhūdinand what is witnessed
And [by] the witness and what is witnessed

85:3
4
قُتِلَ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْأُخْدُودِ
قُتِلَqutilaDestroyed wereأَصْحَـٰبُaṣḥābu(the) companionsٱلْأُخْدُودِl-ukh'dūdi(of) the pit
Cursed were the companions of the trench

85:4
5
ٱلنَّارِ ذَاتِ ٱلْوَقُودِ
ٱلنَّارِal-nāri(Of) the fireذَاتِdhātifullٱلْوَقُودِl-waqūdi(of) the fuel
[Containing] the fire full of fuel

85:5
6
إِذْ هُمْ عَلَيْهَا قُعُودٌۭ
إِذْidhWhenهُمْhumtheyعَلَيْهَاʿalayhāby itقُعُودٌۭquʿūdun(were) sitting
When they were sitting near it

85:6
7
وَهُمْ عَلَىٰ مَا يَفْعَلُونَ بِٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ شُهُودٌۭ
وَهُمْwahumAnd theyعَلَىٰʿalāoverمَاmāwhatيَفْعَلُونَyafʿalūnathey were doingبِٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَbil-mu'minīnato the believersشُهُودٌۭshuhūdunwitnesses
And they, to what they were doing against the believers, were witnesses

85:7
8
وَمَا نَقَمُوا۟ مِنْهُمْ إِلَّآ أَن يُؤْمِنُوا۟ بِٱللَّهِ ٱلْعَزِيزِ ٱلْحَمِيدِ
وَمَاwamāAnd notنَقَمُوا۟naqamūthey resentedمِنْهُمْmin'hum[of] themإِلَّآillāexceptأَنanthatيُؤْمِنُوا۟yu'minūthey believedبِٱللَّهِbil-lahiin Allahٱلْعَزِيزِl-ʿazīzithe All-Mightyٱلْحَمِيدِl-ḥamīdithe Praiseworthy
And they resented them not except because they believed in Allah, the Exalted in Might, the Praiseworthy

9
ٱلَّذِى لَهُۥ مُلْكُ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ ۚ وَٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَىْءٍۢ شَهِيدٌ
ٱلَّذِىalladhīThe One Whoلَهُۥlahufor Himمُلْكُmul'ku(is) the dominionٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِl-samāwāti(of) the heavensوَٱلْأَرْضِ ۚwal-arḍiand the earthوَٱللَّهُwal-lahuand Allahعَلَىٰʿalāonكُلِّkullieveryشَىْءٍۢshayinthingشَهِيدٌshahīdun(is) a Witness
To whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth. And Allah, over all things, is Witness

85:9
10
إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ فَتَنُوا۟ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَٱلْمُؤْمِنَـٰتِ ثُمَّ لَمْ يَتُوبُوا۟ فَلَهُمْ عَذَابُ جَهَنَّمَ وَلَهُمْ عَذَابُ ٱلْحَرِيقِ
إِنَّinnaIndeedٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose whoفَتَنُوا۟fatanūpersecutedٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَl-mu'minīnathe believing menوَٱلْمُؤْمِنَـٰتِwal-mu'minātiand the believing womenثُمَّthummathenلَمْlamnotيَتُوبُوا۟yatūbūthey repentedفَلَهُمْfalahumthen for themعَذَابُʿadhābu(is the) punishmentجَهَنَّمَjahannama(of) Hellوَلَهُمْwalahumand for themعَذَابُʿadhābu(is the) punishmentٱلْحَرِيقِl-ḥarīqi(of) the Burning Fire
Indeed, those who have tortured the believing men and believing women and then have not repented will have the punishment of Hell, and they will have the punishment of the Burning Fire

85:10
11
إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ لَهُمْ جَنَّـٰتٌۭ تَجْرِى مِن تَحْتِهَا ٱلْأَنْهَـٰرُ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ ٱلْفَوْزُ ٱلْكَبِيرُ
إِنَّinnaIndeedٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose whoءَامَنُوا۟āmanūbelieveوَعَمِلُوا۟waʿamilūand doٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِl-ṣāliḥātithe righteous deedsلَهُمْlahumfor themجَنَّـٰتٌۭjannātun(will be) Gardensتَجْرِىtajrīflowمِنminfromتَحْتِهَاtaḥtihāunderneath itٱلْأَنْهَـٰرُ ۚl-anhāruthe riversذَٰلِكَdhālikaThatٱلْفَوْزُl-fawzu(is) the successٱلْكَبِيرُl-kabīruthe great
Indeed, those who have believed and done righteous deeds will have gardens beneath which rivers flow. That is the great attainment

85:11
12
إِنَّ بَطْشَ رَبِّكَ لَشَدِيدٌ
إِنَّinnaIndeedبَطْشَbaṭsha(the) Gripرَبِّكَrabbika(of) your Lordلَشَدِيدٌlashadīdun(is) surely strong
Indeed, the vengeance of your Lord is severe

85:12
13
إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ يُبْدِئُ وَيُعِيدُ
إِنَّهُۥinnahuIndeed HeهُوَhuwaHeيُبْدِئُyub'di-uoriginatesوَيُعِيدُwayuʿīduand repeats
Indeed, it is He who originates [creation] and repeats

14
وَهُوَ ٱلْغَفُورُ ٱلْوَدُودُ
وَهُوَwahuwaAnd Heٱلْغَفُورُl-ghafūru(is) the Oft-Forgivingٱلْوَدُودُl-wadūduthe Most Loving
And He is the Forgiving, the Affectionate

15
ذُو ٱلْعَرْشِ ٱلْمَجِيدُ
ذُوdhūOwner (of)ٱلْعَرْشِl-ʿarshithe Throneٱلْمَجِيدُl-majīduthe Glorious
Honorable Owner of the Throne

16
فَعَّالٌۭ لِّمَا يُرِيدُ
فَعَّالٌۭfaʿʿālunDoerلِّمَاlimāof whatيُرِيدُyurīduHe intends
Effecter of what He intends

85:16
17
هَلْ أَتَىٰكَ حَدِيثُ ٱلْجُنُودِ
هَلْhalHasأَتَىٰكَatākacome to youحَدِيثُḥadīthu(the) storyٱلْجُنُودِl-junūdi(of) the hosts
Has there reached you the story of the soldiers

85:17
18
فِرْعَوْنَ وَثَمُودَ
فِرْعَوْنَfir'ʿawnaFiraunوَثَمُودَwathamūdaand Thamud
[Those of] Pharaoh and Thamud

85:18
19
بَلِ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ فِى تَكْذِيبٍۢ
بَلِbaliNayٱلَّذِينَalladhīnaThose whoكَفَرُوا۟kafarūdisbelieveفِىfī(are) inتَكْذِيبٍۢtakdhībindenial
But they who disbelieve are in [persistent] denial

85:19
20
وَٱللَّهُ مِن وَرَآئِهِم مُّحِيطٌۢ
وَٱللَّهُwal-lahuBut Allahمِنminfromوَرَآئِهِمwarāihimbehind themمُّحِيطٌۢmuḥīṭunencompasses
While Allah encompasses them from behind

21
بَلْ هُوَ قُرْءَانٌۭ مَّجِيدٌۭ
بَلْbalNayهُوَhuwaItقُرْءَانٌۭqur'ānun(is) a QuranمَّجِيدٌۭmajīdunGlorious
But this is an honored Qur'an

22
فِى لَوْحٍۢ مَّحْفُوظٍۭ
فِىfīInلَوْحٍۢlawḥina TabletمَّحْفُوظٍۭmaḥfūẓinGuarded
[Inscribed] in a Preserved Slate
