In short

Laylat al-Qadr is better than a thousand months (Qur’an 97:3). Look for it in the odd nights of the last ten of Ramadan (Sahih al-Bukhari 2017). Many keep the night of the 27th, which begins at sunset on Friday 5 March 2027. Scholars differ on the exact night, so keep all of them.

How this works and sources

  • The night. “The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months” (Qur’an 97:3, read Surah Al-Qadr).
  • Which night. “Seek it in the odd nights of the last ten of Ramadan” (Sahih al-Bukhari 2017, Sahih Muslim 1169).
  • Reward. “Whoever stands in prayer on Laylat al-Qadr with faith and seeking reward, his past sins are forgiven” (Sahih al-Bukhari 1901, Sahih Muslim 760).
  • Effort. The Prophet ﷺ woke his family and gave himself to worship in the last ten (Sahih al-Bukhari 2024, Sahih Muslim 1174) and kept I’tikaf (Sahih al-Bukhari 2026).
  • Dua. Jami’ at-Tirmidhi 3513, the same dua you see above.
  • Dates. Night 21 begins at sunset on Saturday 27 February 2027; night 23 on Monday 1 March; night 25 on Wednesday 3 March; night 27 on Friday 5 March; night 29 on Sunday 7 March. Night 30 only if Ramadan has 30 days. All by the Umm al-Qura estimate; follow your local moon sighting.
Where scholars differ

Many scholars hold that Laylat al-Qadr moves among the odd nights; others hold it is fixed, most often on the 27th, the 21st or the 23rd. Shia Muslims keep the 19th, 21st and 23rd. All agree it lies in Ramadan, and most in the last ten.

How to spend the last ten nights

  1. Look for the night. Seek Laylat al-Qadr in the odd nights of the last ten: 21, 23, 25, 27 and 29.
  2. Keep the night alive. Pray the night prayer, read the Qur’an, and make dua. Rest by day if you need to.
  3. Say the Qadr dua. Say: Allahumma innaka ‘afuwwun tuhibbul-‘afwa fa’fu ‘anni.
  4. Give and forgive. Give sadaqah, ask forgiveness, and make peace with those you have wronged.
  5. Consider I’tikaf. If you can, stay in the mosque for worship, as the Prophet did in these ten nights.

Frequently asked questions

When are the last ten nights of Ramadan 2027?

They begin at sunset on Saturday 27 February 2027, the night of 21 Ramadan 1448, by the Umm al-Qura estimate. The night comes before its day: the night of the 27th begins at sunset on Friday 5 March 2027. Your local moon sighting may move this by a day.

When is Laylat al-Qadr 2027?

Nobody knows for sure. The Prophet ﷺ told us to look for it in the odd nights of the last ten (Sahih al-Bukhari 2017). The night of the 27th is the one many people keep, and scholars differ. Our Laylat al-Qadr 2027 page has the full dates.

What should I say on Laylat al-Qadr?

‘A’ishah asked the Prophet ﷺ what to say if she found it. He taught: Allahumma innaka ‘afuwwun tuhibbul-‘afwa fa’fu ‘anni, “O Allah, You are the Pardoner, You love to pardon, so pardon me” (Jami’ at-Tirmidhi 3513).

What is I’tikaf and do I need it?

I’tikaf is staying in the mosque for worship. The Prophet ﷺ kept it in the last ten nights every year (Sahih al-Bukhari 2026, Sahih Muslim 1172). It is a sunnah, not required of everyone. Schools differ on the shortest stay and on the details for women; ask a scholar you trust.

What did the Prophet ﷺ do in these nights?

‘A’ishah said that when the last ten began he kept his night alive, woke his family, and tied his waist-wrapper, meaning he gave himself fully to worship (Sahih al-Bukhari 2024, Sahih Muslim 1174).
