Surah 63 of 114 · Madani
سُورَةُ المُنَافِقُونَ
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
1
إِذَا جَآءَكَ ٱلْمُنَـٰفِقُونَ قَالُوا۟ نَشْهَدُ إِنَّكَ لَرَسُولُ ٱللَّهِ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ يَعْلَمُ إِنَّكَ لَرَسُولُهُۥ وَٱللَّهُ يَشْهَدُ إِنَّ ٱلْمُنَـٰفِقِينَ لَكَـٰذِبُونَ
إِذَاidhāWhenجَآءَكَjāakacome to youٱلْمُنَـٰفِقُونَl-munāfiqūnathe hypocritesقَالُوا۟qālūthey sayنَشْهَدُnashhaduWe testifyإِنَّكَinnakathat youلَرَسُولُlarasūlu(are) surely (the) Messengerٱللَّهِ ۗl-lahi(of) Allahوَٱللَّهُwal-lahuAnd Allahيَعْلَمُyaʿlamuknowsإِنَّكَinnakathat youلَرَسُولُهُۥlarasūluhu(are) surely His Messengerوَٱللَّهُwal-lahuand Allahيَشْهَدُyashhadutestifiesإِنَّinnathatٱلْمُنَـٰفِقِينَl-munāfiqīnathe hypocritesلَكَـٰذِبُونَlakādhibūna(are) surely liars
When the hypocrites come to you, [O Muhammad], they say, "We testify that you are the Messenger of Allah." And Allah knows that you are His Messenger, and Allah testifies that the hypocrites are liars

63:1
2
ٱتَّخَذُوٓا۟ أَيْمَـٰنَهُمْ جُنَّةًۭ فَصَدُّوا۟ عَن سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ ۚ إِنَّهُمْ سَآءَ مَا كَانُوا۟ يَعْمَلُونَ
ٱتَّخَذُوٓا۟ittakhadhūThey takeأَيْمَـٰنَهُمْaymānahumtheir oathsجُنَّةًۭjunnatan(as) a coverفَصَدُّوا۟faṣaddūso they turn awayعَنʿanfromسَبِيلِsabīli(the) Wayٱللَّهِ ۚl-lahi(of) AllahإِنَّهُمْinnahumIndeed, [they]سَآءَsāaevil isمَاmāwhatكَانُوا۟kānūthey used toيَعْمَلُونَyaʿmalūnado
They have taken their oaths as a cover, so they averted [people] from the way of Allah. Indeed, it was evil that they were doing

63:2
3
ذَٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمْ ءَامَنُوا۟ ثُمَّ كَفَرُوا۟ فَطُبِعَ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِمْ فَهُمْ لَا يَفْقَهُونَ
ذَٰلِكَdhālikaThatبِأَنَّهُمْbi-annahum(is) becauseءَامَنُوا۟āmanūthey believedثُمَّthummathenكَفَرُوا۟kafarūthey disbelievedفَطُبِعَfaṭubiʿaso were sealedعَلَىٰʿalā[upon]قُلُوبِهِمْqulūbihimtheir heartsفَهُمْfahumso theyلَاlā(do) notيَفْقَهُونَyafqahūnaunderstand
That is because they believed, and then they disbelieved; so their hearts were sealed over, and they do not understand

63:3

۞ وَإِذَا رَأَيْتَهُمْ تُعْجِبُكَ أَجْسَامُهُمْ ۖ وَإِن يَقُولُوا۟ تَسْمَعْ لِقَوْلِهِمْ ۖ كَأَنَّهُمْ خُشُبٌۭ مُّسَنَّدَةٌۭ ۖ يَحْسَبُونَ كُلَّ صَيْحَةٍ عَلَيْهِمْ ۚ هُمُ ٱلْعَدُوُّ فَٱحْذَرْهُمْ ۚ قَـٰتَلَهُمُ ٱللَّهُ ۖ أَنَّىٰ يُؤْفَكُونَ
۞ وَإِذَاwa-idhāAnd whenرَأَيْتَهُمْra-aytahumyou see themتُعْجِبُكَtuʿ'jibukapleases youأَجْسَامُهُمْ ۖajsāmuhumtheir bodiesوَإِنwa-inand ifيَقُولُوا۟yaqūlūthey speakتَسْمَعْtasmaʿyou listenلِقَوْلِهِمْ ۖliqawlihimto their speechكَأَنَّهُمْka-annahumas if they (were)خُشُبٌۭkhushubunpieces of woodمُّسَنَّدَةٌۭ ۖmusannadatunpropped upيَحْسَبُونَyaḥsabūnaThey thinkكُلَّkullaeveryصَيْحَةٍṣayḥatinshoutعَلَيْهِمْ ۚʿalayhim(is) against themهُمُhumuTheyٱلْعَدُوُّl-ʿaduwu(are) the enemyفَٱحْذَرْهُمْ ۚfa-iḥ'dharhumso beware of themقَـٰتَلَهُمُqātalahumuMay destroy themٱللَّهُ ۖl-lahuAllahأَنَّىٰannāHowيُؤْفَكُونَyu'fakūnaare they deluded
And when you see them, their forms please you, and if they speak, you listen to their speech. [They are] as if they were pieces of wood propped up - they think that every shout is against them. They are the enemy, so beware of them. May Allah destroy them; how are they deluded

63:4
5
وَإِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمْ تَعَالَوْا۟ يَسْتَغْفِرْ لَكُمْ رَسُولُ ٱللَّهِ لَوَّوْا۟ رُءُوسَهُمْ وَرَأَيْتَهُمْ يَصُدُّونَ وَهُم مُّسْتَكْبِرُونَ
وَإِذَاwa-idhāAnd whenقِيلَqīlait is saidلَهُمْlahumto themتَعَالَوْا۟taʿālawComeيَسْتَغْفِرْyastaghfirwill ask forgivenessلَكُمْlakumfor youرَسُولُrasūlu(the) Messengerٱللَّهِl-lahi(of) Allahلَوَّوْا۟lawwawThey turn asideرُءُوسَهُمْruūsahumtheir headsوَرَأَيْتَهُمْwara-aytahumand you see themيَصُدُّونَyaṣuddūnaturning awayوَهُمwahumwhile theyمُّسْتَكْبِرُونَmus'takbirūna(are) arrogant
And when it is said to them, "Come, the Messenger of Allah will ask forgiveness for you," they turn their heads aside and you see them evading while they are arrogant

63:5
6
سَوَآءٌ عَلَيْهِمْ أَسْتَغْفَرْتَ لَهُمْ أَمْ لَمْ تَسْتَغْفِرْ لَهُمْ لَن يَغْفِرَ ٱللَّهُ لَهُمْ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا يَهْدِى ٱلْقَوْمَ ٱلْفَـٰسِقِينَ
سَوَآءٌsawāon(It) is sameعَلَيْهِمْʿalayhimfor themأَسْتَغْفَرْتَastaghfartawhether you ask forgivenessلَهُمْlahumfor themأَمْamorلَمْlam(do) notتَسْتَغْفِرْtastaghfirask forgivenessلَهُمْlahumfor themلَنlanNeverيَغْفِرَyaghfirawill forgiveٱللَّهُl-lahuAllahلَهُمْ ۚlahum[to] themإِنَّinnaIndeedٱللَّهَl-lahaAllahلَاlā(does) notيَهْدِىyahdīguideٱلْقَوْمَl-qawmathe peopleٱلْفَـٰسِقِينَl-fāsiqīnathe defiantly disobedient
It is all the same for them whether you ask forgiveness for them or do not ask forgiveness for them; never will Allah forgive them. Indeed, Allah does not guide the defiantly disobedient people

63:6
7
هُمُ ٱلَّذِينَ يَقُولُونَ لَا تُنفِقُوا۟ عَلَىٰ مَنْ عِندَ رَسُولِ ٱللَّهِ حَتَّىٰ يَنفَضُّوا۟ ۗ وَلِلَّهِ خَزَآئِنُ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ وَلَـٰكِنَّ ٱلْمُنَـٰفِقِينَ لَا يَفْقَهُونَ
هُمُhumuTheyٱلَّذِينَalladhīna(are) those whoيَقُولُونَyaqūlūnasayلَاlā(Do) notتُنفِقُوا۟tunfiqūspendعَلَىٰʿalāonمَنْman(those) whoعِندَʿinda(are) withرَسُولِrasūli(the) Messengerٱللَّهِl-lahi(of) Allahحَتَّىٰḥattāuntilيَنفَضُّوا۟ ۗyanfaḍḍūthey disbandوَلِلَّهِwalillahiAnd for Allahخَزَآئِنُkhazāinu(are the) treasuresٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِl-samāwāti(of) the heavensوَٱلْأَرْضِwal-arḍiand the earthوَلَـٰكِنَّwalākinnabutٱلْمُنَـٰفِقِينَl-munāfiqīnathe hypocritesلَاlā(do) notيَفْقَهُونَyafqahūnaunderstand
They are the ones who say, "Do not spend on those who are with the Messenger of Allah until they disband." And to Allah belongs the depositories of the heavens and the earth, but the hypocrites do not understand

63:7
8
يَقُولُونَ لَئِن رَّجَعْنَآ إِلَى ٱلْمَدِينَةِ لَيُخْرِجَنَّ ٱلْأَعَزُّ مِنْهَا ٱلْأَذَلَّ ۚ وَلِلَّهِ ٱلْعِزَّةُ وَلِرَسُولِهِۦ وَلِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَلَـٰكِنَّ ٱلْمُنَـٰفِقِينَ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ
يَقُولُونَyaqūlūnaThey sayلَئِنla-inIfرَّجَعْنَآrajaʿnāwe returnإِلَىilātoٱلْمَدِينَةِl-madīnatiAl-Madinahلَيُخْرِجَنَّlayukh'rijannasurely, will expelٱلْأَعَزُّl-aʿazuthe more honorableمِنْهَاmin'hāfrom itٱلْأَذَلَّ ۚl-adhalathe more humbleوَلِلَّهِwalillahiBut for Allahٱلْعِزَّةُl-ʿizatu(is) the honorوَلِرَسُولِهِۦwalirasūlihiand for His Messengerوَلِلْمُؤْمِنِينَwalil'mu'minīnaand for the believersوَلَـٰكِنَّwalākinnabutٱلْمُنَـٰفِقِينَl-munāfiqīnathe hypocritesلَاlā(do) notيَعْلَمُونَyaʿlamūnaknow
They say, "If we return to al-Madinah, the more honored [for power] will surely expel therefrom the more humble." And to Allah belongs [all] honor, and to His Messenger, and to the believers, but the hypocrites do not know

63:8
9
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ لَا تُلْهِكُمْ أَمْوَٰلُكُمْ وَلَآ أَوْلَـٰدُكُمْ عَن ذِكْرِ ٱللَّهِ ۚ وَمَن يَفْعَلْ ذَٰلِكَ فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْخَـٰسِرُونَ
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَاyāayyuhāOٱلَّذِينَalladhīnayou (who)ءَامَنُوا۟āmanūbelieveلَاlā(Let) notتُلْهِكُمْtul'hikumdivert youأَمْوَٰلُكُمْamwālukumyour wealthوَلَآwalāand notأَوْلَـٰدُكُمْawlādukumyour childrenعَنʿanfromذِكْرِdhik'ri(the) remembranceٱللَّهِ ۚl-lahi(of) AllahوَمَنwamanAnd whoeverيَفْعَلْyafʿaldoesذَٰلِكَdhālikathatفَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَfa-ulāikathen thoseهُمُhumu[they]ٱلْخَـٰسِرُونَl-khāsirūna(are) the losers
O you who have believed, let not your wealth and your children divert you from remembrance of Allah. And whoever does that - then those are the losers

63:9
10
وَأَنفِقُوا۟ مِن مَّا رَزَقْنَـٰكُم مِّن قَبْلِ أَن يَأْتِىَ أَحَدَكُمُ ٱلْمَوْتُ فَيَقُولَ رَبِّ لَوْلَآ أَخَّرْتَنِىٓ إِلَىٰٓ أَجَلٍۢ قَرِيبٍۢ فَأَصَّدَّقَ وَأَكُن مِّنَ ٱلصَّـٰلِحِينَ
وَأَنفِقُوا۟wa-anfiqūAnd spendمِنminfromمَّاmāwhatرَزَقْنَـٰكُمrazaqnākumWe have provided youمِّنminfromقَبْلِqablibeforeأَنan[that]يَأْتِىَyatiyacomesأَحَدَكُمُaḥadakumu(to) one of youٱلْمَوْتُl-mawtuthe deathفَيَقُولَfayaqūlaand he saysرَبِّrabbiMy LordلَوْلَآlawlāWhy notأَخَّرْتَنِىٓakhartanīYou delay meإِلَىٰٓilāforأَجَلٍۢajalina termقَرِيبٍۢqarībinnearفَأَصَّدَّقَfa-aṣṣaddaqaso I would give charityوَأَكُنwa-akunand beمِّنَminaamongٱلصَّـٰلِحِينَl-ṣāliḥīnathe righteous
And spend [in the way of Allah] from what We have provided you before death approaches one of you and he says, "My Lord, if only You would delay me for a brief term so I would give charity and be among the righteous

63:10
11
وَلَن يُؤَخِّرَ ٱللَّهُ نَفْسًا إِذَا جَآءَ أَجَلُهَا ۚ وَٱللَّهُ خَبِيرٌۢ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ
وَلَنwalanBut neverيُؤَخِّرَyu-akhirawill (be) delayedٱللَّهُl-lahu(by) Allahنَفْسًاnafsana soulإِذَاidhāwhenجَآءَjāahas comeأَجَلُهَا ۚajaluhāits termوَٱللَّهُwal-lahuAnd Allahخَبِيرٌۢkhabīrun(is) All-Awareبِمَاbimāof whatتَعْمَلُونَtaʿmalūnayou do
But never will Allah delay a soul when its time has come. And Allah is Acquainted with what you do
