Surah 96 of 114 · Makki
Surah Al-Alaq (The Clot)
سُورَةُ العَلَقِ
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
1
ٱقْرَأْ بِٱسْمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَ
ٱقْرَأْiq'raReadبِٱسْمِbi-is'miin (the) nameرَبِّكَrabbika(of) your Lordٱلَّذِىalladhīthe One Whoخَلَقَkhalaqacreated
Recite in the name of your Lord who created
2
خَلَقَ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ مِنْ عَلَقٍ
خَلَقَkhalaqaHe createdٱلْإِنسَـٰنَl-insānamanمِنْminfromعَلَقٍʿalaqina clinging substance
Created man from a clinging substance
3
ٱقْرَأْ وَرَبُّكَ ٱلْأَكْرَمُ
ٱقْرَأْiq'raReadوَرَبُّكَwarabbukaand your Lordٱلْأَكْرَمُl-akramu(is) the Most Generous
Recite, and your Lord is the most Generous
4
ٱلَّذِى عَلَّمَ بِٱلْقَلَمِ
ٱلَّذِىalladhīThe One Whoعَلَّمَʿallamataughtبِٱلْقَلَمِbil-qalamiby the pen
Who taught by the pen
5
عَلَّمَ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ مَا لَمْ يَعْلَمْ
عَلَّمَʿallamaTaughtٱلْإِنسَـٰنَl-insānamanمَاmāwhatلَمْlamnotيَعْلَمْyaʿlamhe knew
Taught man that which he knew not
6
كَلَّآ إِنَّ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ لَيَطْغَىٰٓ
كَلَّآkallāNayإِنَّinnaIndeedٱلْإِنسَـٰنَl-insānamanلَيَطْغَىٰٓlayaṭghāsurely transgresses
No! [But] indeed, man transgresses
7
أَن رَّءَاهُ ٱسْتَغْنَىٰٓ
أَنanThatرَّءَاهُraāhuhe sees himselfٱسْتَغْنَىٰٓis'taghnāself-sufficient
Because he sees himself self-sufficient
8
إِنَّ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ ٱلرُّجْعَىٰٓ
إِنَّinnaIndeedإِلَىٰilātoرَبِّكَrabbikayour Lordٱلرُّجْعَىٰٓl-ruj'ʿā(is) the return
Indeed, to your Lord is the return
9
أَرَءَيْتَ ٱلَّذِى يَنْهَىٰ
أَرَءَيْتَara-aytaHave you seenٱلَّذِىalladhīthe one whoيَنْهَىٰyanhāforbids
Have you seen the one who forbids
10
عَبْدًا إِذَا صَلَّىٰٓ
عَبْدًاʿabdanA slaveإِذَاidhāwhenصَلَّىٰٓṣallāhe prays
A servant when he prays
11
أَرَءَيْتَ إِن كَانَ عَلَى ٱلْهُدَىٰٓ
أَرَءَيْتَara-aytaHave you seenإِنinifكَانَkānahe isعَلَىʿalāuponٱلْهُدَىٰٓl-hudā[the] guidance
Have you seen if he is upon guidance
12
أَوْ أَمَرَ بِٱلتَّقْوَىٰٓ
أَوْawOrأَمَرَamarahe enjoinsبِٱلتَّقْوَىٰٓbil-taqwā[of the] righteousness
Or enjoins righteousness
13
أَرَءَيْتَ إِن كَذَّبَ وَتَوَلَّىٰٓ
أَرَءَيْتَara-aytaHave you seenإِنinifكَذَّبَkadhabahe deniesوَتَوَلَّىٰٓwatawallāand turns away
Have you seen if he denies and turns away
14
أَلَمْ يَعْلَم بِأَنَّ ٱللَّهَ يَرَىٰ
أَلَمْalamDoes notيَعْلَمyaʿlamhe knowبِأَنَّbi-annathatٱللَّهَl-lahaAllahيَرَىٰyarāsees
Does he not know that Allah sees
15
كَلَّا لَئِن لَّمْ يَنتَهِ لَنَسْفَعًۢا بِٱلنَّاصِيَةِ
كَلَّاkallāNayلَئِنla-inIfلَّمْlamnotيَنتَهِyantahihe desistsلَنَسْفَعًۢاlanasfaʿansurely We will drag himبِٱلنَّاصِيَةِbil-nāṣiyatiby the forelock
No! If he does not desist, We will surely drag him by the forelock
16
نَاصِيَةٍۢ كَـٰذِبَةٍ خَاطِئَةٍۢ
نَاصِيَةٍۢnāṣiyatinA forelockكَـٰذِبَةٍkādhibatinlyingخَاطِئَةٍۢkhāṭi-atinsinful
A lying, sinning forelock
17
فَلْيَدْعُ نَادِيَهُۥ
فَلْيَدْعُfalyadʿuThen let him callنَادِيَهُۥnādiyahuhis associates
Then let him call his associates
18
سَنَدْعُ ٱلزَّبَانِيَةَ
سَنَدْعُsanadʿuWe will callٱلزَّبَانِيَةَl-zabāniyatathe Angels of Hell
We will call the angels of Hell
19
كَلَّا لَا تُطِعْهُ وَٱسْجُدْ وَٱقْتَرِب ۩
كَلَّاkallāNayلَاlā(Do) notتُطِعْهُtuṭiʿ'huobey himوَٱسْجُدْwa-us'judBut prostrateوَٱقْتَرِب ۩wa-iq'tariband draw near (to Allah)
No! Do not obey him. But prostrate and draw near [to Allah]
