سُورَةُ يُوسُفَ

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
1
الٓر ۚ تِلْكَ ءَايَـٰتُ ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ ٱلْمُبِينِ
الٓر ۚalif-lam-raAlif Laam Raتِلْكَtil'kaTheseءَايَـٰتُāyātu(are the) Versesٱلْكِتَـٰبِl-kitābi(of) the Bookٱلْمُبِينِl-mubīni[the] clear
Alif, Lam, Ra. These are the verses of the clear Book
⤳ Link 12:1
2
إِنَّآ أَنزَلْنَـٰهُ قُرْءَٰنًا عَرَبِيًّۭا لَّعَلَّكُمْ تَعْقِلُونَ
إِنَّآinnāIndeed, WeأَنزَلْنَـٰهُanzalnāhuWe have sent it downقُرْءَٰنًاqur'ānan(as) a Quran in Arabicعَرَبِيًّۭاʿarabiyyan(as) a Quran in Arabicلَّعَلَّكُمْlaʿallakumso that you mayتَعْقِلُونَtaʿqilūnaunderstand
Indeed, We have sent it down as an Arabic Qur'an that you might understand
⤳ Link 12:2
3
نَحْنُ نَقُصُّ عَلَيْكَ أَحْسَنَ ٱلْقَصَصِ بِمَآ أَوْحَيْنَآ إِلَيْكَ هَـٰذَا ٱلْقُرْءَانَ وَإِن كُنتَ مِن قَبْلِهِۦ لَمِنَ ٱلْغَـٰفِلِينَ
نَحْنُnaḥnuWeنَقُصُّnaquṣṣurelateعَلَيْكَʿalaykato youأَحْسَنَaḥsanathe bestٱلْقَصَصِl-qaṣaṣiof the narrationsبِمَآbimāin whatأَوْحَيْنَآawḥaynāWe have revealedإِلَيْكَilaykato youهَـٰذَاhādhā(of) thisٱلْقُرْءَانَl-qur'ānathe Quranوَإِنwa-inalthoughكُنتَkuntayou wereمِنminbefore itقَبْلِهِۦqablihibefore itلَمِنَlaminasurely amongٱلْغَـٰفِلِينَl-ghāfilīnathe unaware
We relate to you, [O Muhammad], the best of stories in what We have revealed to you of this Qur'an although you were, before it, among the unaware
⤳ Link 12:3
4
إِذْ قَالَ يُوسُفُ لِأَبِيهِ يَـٰٓأَبَتِ إِنِّى رَأَيْتُ أَحَدَ عَشَرَ كَوْكَبًۭا وَٱلشَّمْسَ وَٱلْقَمَرَ رَأَيْتُهُمْ لِى سَـٰجِدِينَ
إِذْidhWhenقَالَqālasaidيُوسُفُyūsufuYusufلِأَبِيهِli-abīhito his fatherيَـٰٓأَبَتِyāabatiO my fatherإِنِّىinnīIndeed, Iرَأَيْتُra-aytuI sawأَحَدَaḥadaelevenعَشَرَʿasharaelevenكَوْكَبًۭاkawkabanstarsوَٱلشَّمْسَwal-shamsaand the sunوَٱلْقَمَرَwal-qamaraand the moonرَأَيْتُهُمْra-aytuhumI saw themلِىto meسَـٰجِدِينَsājidīnaprostrating
[Of these stories mention] when Joseph said to his father, "O my father, indeed I have seen [in a dream] eleven stars and the sun and the moon; I saw them prostrating to me
⤳ Link 12:4
5
قَالَ يَـٰبُنَىَّ لَا تَقْصُصْ رُءْيَاكَ عَلَىٰٓ إِخْوَتِكَ فَيَكِيدُوا۟ لَكَ كَيْدًا ۖ إِنَّ ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنَ لِلْإِنسَـٰنِ عَدُوٌّۭ مُّبِينٌۭ
قَالَqālaHe saidيَـٰبُنَىَّyābunayyaO my sonلَا(Do) notتَقْصُصْtaqṣuṣrelateرُءْيَاكَru'yākayour visionعَلَىٰٓʿalātoإِخْوَتِكَikh'watikayour brothersفَيَكِيدُوا۟fayakīdūlest they planلَكَlakaagainst youكَيْدًا ۖkaydana plotإِنَّinnaIndeedٱلشَّيْطَـٰنَl-shayṭānathe Shaitaanلِلْإِنسَـٰنِlil'insāni(is) to manعَدُوٌّۭʿaduwwunan enemyمُّبِينٌۭmubīnunopen
He said, "O my son, do not relate your vision to your brothers or they will contrive against you a plan. Indeed Satan, to man, is a manifest enemy
⤳ Link 12:5
6
وَكَذَٰلِكَ يَجْتَبِيكَ رَبُّكَ وَيُعَلِّمُكَ مِن تَأْوِيلِ ٱلْأَحَادِيثِ وَيُتِمُّ نِعْمَتَهُۥ عَلَيْكَ وَعَلَىٰٓ ءَالِ يَعْقُوبَ كَمَآ أَتَمَّهَا عَلَىٰٓ أَبَوَيْكَ مِن قَبْلُ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ وَإِسْحَـٰقَ ۚ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ عَلِيمٌ حَكِيمٌۭ
وَكَذَٰلِكَwakadhālikaAnd thusيَجْتَبِيكَyajtabīkawill choose youرَبُّكَrabbukayour Lordوَيُعَلِّمُكَwayuʿallimukaand will teach youمِنminofتَأْوِيلِtawīli(the) interpretationٱلْأَحَادِيثِl-aḥādīthi(of) the narrativesوَيُتِمُّwayutimmuand completeنِعْمَتَهُۥniʿ'matahuHis Favorعَلَيْكَʿalaykaon youوَعَلَىٰٓwaʿalāand onءَالِāli(the) familyيَعْقُوبَyaʿqūba(of) YaqubكَمَآkamāasأَتَمَّهَاatammahāHe completed itعَلَىٰٓʿalāonأَبَوَيْكَabawaykayour two forefathersمِنminbefore قَبْلُqablubefore إِبْرَٰهِيمَib'rāhīmaIbrahimوَإِسْحَـٰقَ ۚwa-is'ḥāqaand IsaacإِنَّinnaIndeedرَبَّكَrabbakayour Lordعَلِيمٌʿalīmun(is) All-KnowerحَكِيمٌۭḥakīmunAll-Wise
And thus will your Lord choose you and teach you the interpretation of narratives and complete His favor upon you and upon the family of Jacob, as He completed it upon your fathers before, Abraham and Isaac. Indeed, your Lord is Knowing and Wise

7
۞ لَّقَدْ كَانَ فِى يُوسُفَ وَإِخْوَتِهِۦٓ ءَايَـٰتٌۭ لِّلسَّآئِلِينَ
۞ لَّقَدْlaqadCertainlyكَانَkānawereفِىinيُوسُفَyūsufaYusufوَإِخْوَتِهِۦٓwa-ikh'watihiand his brothersءَايَـٰتٌۭāyātunsignsلِّلسَّآئِلِينَlilssāilīnafor those who ask
Certainly were there in Joseph and his brothers signs for those who ask
⤳ Link 12:7
8
إِذْ قَالُوا۟ لَيُوسُفُ وَأَخُوهُ أَحَبُّ إِلَىٰٓ أَبِينَا مِنَّا وَنَحْنُ عُصْبَةٌ إِنَّ أَبَانَا لَفِى ضَلَـٰلٍۢ مُّبِينٍ
إِذْidhWhenقَالُوا۟qālūthey saidلَيُوسُفُlayūsufuSurely Yusufوَأَخُوهُwa-akhūhuand his brotherأَحَبُّaḥabbu(are) more belovedإِلَىٰٓilātoأَبِينَاabīnāour fatherمِنَّاminnāthan weوَنَحْنُwanaḥnuwhile weعُصْبَةٌʿuṣ'batun(are) a groupإِنَّinnaIndeedأَبَانَاabānāour fatherلَفِىlafī(is) surely inضَلَـٰلٍۢḍalālinan errorمُّبِينٍmubīninclear
When they said, "Joseph and his brother are more beloved to our father than we, while we are a clan. Indeed, our father is in clear error
⤳ Link 12:8
9
ٱقْتُلُوا۟ يُوسُفَ أَوِ ٱطْرَحُوهُ أَرْضًۭا يَخْلُ لَكُمْ وَجْهُ أَبِيكُمْ وَتَكُونُوا۟ مِنۢ بَعْدِهِۦ قَوْمًۭا صَـٰلِحِينَ
ٱقْتُلُوا۟uq'tulūKillيُوسُفَyūsufaYusufأَوِawiorٱطْرَحُوهُiṭ'raḥūhucast himأَرْضًۭاarḍan(to) a landيَخْلُyakhluso will be freeلَكُمْlakumfor youوَجْهُwajhu(the) faceأَبِيكُمْabīkum(of) your fatherوَتَكُونُوا۟watakūnūand you will beمِنۢminafter thatبَعْدِهِۦbaʿdihiafter thatقَوْمًۭاqawmana peopleصَـٰلِحِينَṣāliḥīnarighteous
Kill Joseph or cast him out to [another] land; the countenance of your father will [then] be only for you, and you will be after that a righteous people
⤳ Link 12:9
10
قَالَ قَآئِلٌۭ مِّنْهُمْ لَا تَقْتُلُوا۟ يُوسُفَ وَأَلْقُوهُ فِى غَيَـٰبَتِ ٱلْجُبِّ يَلْتَقِطْهُ بَعْضُ ٱلسَّيَّارَةِ إِن كُنتُمْ فَـٰعِلِينَ
قَالَqālaSaidقَآئِلٌۭqāiluna speakerمِّنْهُمْmin'humamong themلَا(Do) notتَقْتُلُوا۟taqtulūkillيُوسُفَyūsufaYusufوَأَلْقُوهُwa-alqūhubut throw himفِىinغَيَـٰبَتِghayābatithe bottomٱلْجُبِّl-jubi(of) the wellيَلْتَقِطْهُyaltaqiṭ'huwill pick himبَعْضُbaʿḍusomeٱلسَّيَّارَةِl-sayārati[the] caravanإِنinifكُنتُمْkuntumyou areفَـٰعِلِينَfāʿilīnadoing
Said a speaker among them, "Do not kill Joseph but throw him into the bottom of the well; some travelers will pick him up - if you would do [something]
⤳ Link 12:10
11
قَالُوا۟ يَـٰٓأَبَانَا مَا لَكَ لَا تَأْمَ۫نَّا عَلَىٰ يُوسُفَ وَإِنَّا لَهُۥ لَنَـٰصِحُونَ
قَالُوا۟qālūThey saidيَـٰٓأَبَانَاyāabānāO our fatherمَاWhyلَكَlaka(do) youلَاnotتَأْمَ۫نَّاtamannātrust usعَلَىٰʿalāwithيُوسُفَyūsufaYusufوَإِنَّاwa-innāwhile indeed, weلَهُۥlahu(are) for himلَنَـٰصِحُونَlanāṣiḥūnasurely well-wishers
They said, "O our father, why do you not entrust us with Joseph while indeed, we are to him sincere counselors
⤳ Link 12:11
12
أَرْسِلْهُ مَعَنَا غَدًۭا يَرْتَعْ وَيَلْعَبْ وَإِنَّا لَهُۥ لَحَـٰفِظُونَ
أَرْسِلْهُarsil'huSend himمَعَنَاmaʿanāwith usغَدًۭاghadantomorrowيَرْتَعْyartaʿ(to) enjoyوَيَلْعَبْwayalʿaband playوَإِنَّاwa-innāAnd indeed, weلَهُۥlahufor himلَحَـٰفِظُونَlaḥāfiẓūna(will) surely (be) guardians
Send him with us tomorrow that he may eat well and play. And indeed, we will be his guardians
⤳ Link 12:12
13
قَالَ إِنِّى لَيَحْزُنُنِىٓ أَن تَذْهَبُوا۟ بِهِۦ وَأَخَافُ أَن يَأْكُلَهُ ٱلذِّئْبُ وَأَنتُمْ عَنْهُ غَـٰفِلُونَ
قَالَqālaHe saidإِنِّىinnīIndeed, [I]لَيَحْزُنُنِىٓlayaḥzununīit surely saddens meأَنanthatتَذْهَبُوا۟tadhhabūyou should take himبِهِۦbihiyou should take himوَأَخَافُwa-akhāfuand I fearأَنanthatيَأْكُلَهُyakulahuwould eat himٱلذِّئْبُl-dhi'bua wolfوَأَنتُمْwa-antumwhile youعَنْهُʿanhuof himغَـٰفِلُونَghāfilūna(are) unaware
[Jacob] said, "Indeed, it saddens me that you should take him, and I fear that a wolf would eat him while you are of him unaware
⤳ Link 12:13
14
قَالُوا۟ لَئِنْ أَكَلَهُ ٱلذِّئْبُ وَنَحْنُ عُصْبَةٌ إِنَّآ إِذًۭا لَّخَـٰسِرُونَ
قَالُوا۟qālūThey saidلَئِنْla-inIfأَكَلَهُakalahueats himٱلذِّئْبُl-dhi'buthe wolfوَنَحْنُwanaḥnuwhile weعُصْبَةٌʿuṣ'batun(are) a groupإِنَّآinnāindeed, weإِذًۭاidhanthenلَّخَـٰسِرُونَlakhāsirūnasurely (would be) losers
They said, "If a wolf should eat him while we are a [strong] clan, indeed, we would then be losers
⤳ Link 12:14
15
فَلَمَّا ذَهَبُوا۟ بِهِۦ وَأَجْمَعُوٓا۟ أَن يَجْعَلُوهُ فِى غَيَـٰبَتِ ٱلْجُبِّ ۚ وَأَوْحَيْنَآ إِلَيْهِ لَتُنَبِّئَنَّهُم بِأَمْرِهِمْ هَـٰذَا وَهُمْ لَا يَشْعُرُونَ
فَلَمَّاfalammāSo whenذَهَبُوا۟dhahabūthey took himبِهِۦbihithey took himوَأَجْمَعُوٓا۟wa-ajmaʿūand agreedأَنanthatيَجْعَلُوهُyajʿalūhuthey put himفِىinغَيَـٰبَتِghayābati(the) bottomٱلْجُبِّ ۚl-jubi(of) the wellوَأَوْحَيْنَآwa-awḥaynāBut We inspiredإِلَيْهِilayhito himلَتُنَبِّئَنَّهُمlatunabbi-annahumSurely, you will inform themبِأَمْرِهِمْbi-amrihimabout this affairهَـٰذَاhādhāabout this affairوَهُمْwahumwhile theyلَا(do) notيَشْعُرُونَyashʿurūnaperceive
So when they took him [out] and agreed to put him into the bottom of the well... But We inspired to him, "You will surely inform them [someday] about this affair of theirs while they do not perceive [your identity]
⤳ Link 12:15
16
وَجَآءُوٓ أَبَاهُمْ عِشَآءًۭ يَبْكُونَ
وَجَآءُوٓwajāūAnd they cameأَبَاهُمْabāhum(to) their fatherعِشَآءًۭʿishāanearly at nightيَبْكُونَyabkūnaweeping
And they came to their father at night, weeping
⤳ Link 12:16
17
قَالُوا۟ يَـٰٓأَبَانَآ إِنَّا ذَهَبْنَا نَسْتَبِقُ وَتَرَكْنَا يُوسُفَ عِندَ مَتَـٰعِنَا فَأَكَلَهُ ٱلذِّئْبُ ۖ وَمَآ أَنتَ بِمُؤْمِنٍۢ لَّنَا وَلَوْ كُنَّا صَـٰدِقِينَ
قَالُوا۟qālūThey saidيَـٰٓأَبَانَآyāabānāO our fatherإِنَّاinnāIndeed, weذَهَبْنَاdhahabnā[we] wentنَسْتَبِقُnastabiquracing each otherوَتَرَكْنَاwataraknāand we leftيُوسُفَyūsufaYusufعِندَʿindawithمَتَـٰعِنَاmatāʿināour possessionsفَأَكَلَهُfa-akalahuand ate himٱلذِّئْبُ ۖl-dhi'buthe wolfوَمَآwamāBut notأَنتَantayouبِمُؤْمِنٍۢbimu'minin(will) believeلَّنَاlanāusوَلَوْwalaweven ifكُنَّاkunnāwe areصَـٰدِقِينَṣādiqīnatruthful
They said, "O our father, indeed we went racing each other and left Joseph with our possessions, and a wolf ate him. But you would not believe us, even if we were truthful
⤳ Link 12:17
18
وَجَآءُو عَلَىٰ قَمِيصِهِۦ بِدَمٍۢ كَذِبٍۢ ۚ قَالَ بَلْ سَوَّلَتْ لَكُمْ أَنفُسُكُمْ أَمْرًۭا ۖ فَصَبْرٌۭ جَمِيلٌۭ ۖ وَٱللَّهُ ٱلْمُسْتَعَانُ عَلَىٰ مَا تَصِفُونَ
وَجَآءُوwajāūAnd they broughtعَلَىٰʿalāuponقَمِيصِهِۦqamīṣihihis shirtبِدَمٍۢbidaminwith false bloodكَذِبٍۢ ۚkadhibinwith false bloodقَالَqālaHe saidبَلْbalNayسَوَّلَتْsawwalathas enticed youلَكُمْlakumhas enticed youأَنفُسُكُمْanfusukumyour soulsأَمْرًۭا ۖamran(to) a matterفَصَبْرٌۭfaṣabrunso patienceجَمِيلٌۭ ۖjamīlun(is) beautifulوَٱللَّهُwal-lahuAnd Allahٱلْمُسْتَعَانُl-mus'taʿānu(is) the One sought for helpعَلَىٰʿalāagainstمَاwhatتَصِفُونَtaṣifūnayou describe
And they brought upon his shirt false blood. [Jacob] said, "Rather, your souls have enticed you to something, so patience is most fitting. And Allah is the one sought for help against that which you describe
⤳ Link 12:18
19
وَجَآءَتْ سَيَّارَةٌۭ فَأَرْسَلُوا۟ وَارِدَهُمْ فَأَدْلَىٰ دَلْوَهُۥ ۖ قَالَ يَـٰبُشْرَىٰ هَـٰذَا غُلَـٰمٌۭ ۚ وَأَسَرُّوهُ بِضَـٰعَةًۭ ۚ وَٱللَّهُ عَلِيمٌۢ بِمَا يَعْمَلُونَ
وَجَآءَتْwajāatAnd there cameسَيَّارَةٌۭsayyāratuna caravanفَأَرْسَلُوا۟fa-arsalūand they sentوَارِدَهُمْwāridahumtheir water drawerفَأَدْلَىٰfa-adlāthen he let downدَلْوَهُۥ ۖdalwahuhis bucketقَالَqālaHe saidيَـٰبُشْرَىٰyābush'rāO good newsهَـٰذَاhādhāThisغُلَـٰمٌۭ ۚghulāmun(is) a boyوَأَسَرُّوهُwa-asarrūhuAnd they hid himبِضَـٰعَةًۭ ۚbiḍāʿatan(as) a merchandiseوَٱللَّهُwal-lahuAnd Allahعَلِيمٌۢʿalīmun(is) All-Knowerبِمَاbimāof whatيَعْمَلُونَyaʿmalūnathey do
And there came a company of travelers; then they sent their water drawer, and he let down his bucket. He said, "Good news! Here is a boy." And they concealed him, [taking him] as merchandise; and Allah was knowing of what they did
⤳ Link 12:19
20
وَشَرَوْهُ بِثَمَنٍۭ بَخْسٍۢ دَرَٰهِمَ مَعْدُودَةٍۢ وَكَانُوا۟ فِيهِ مِنَ ٱلزَّٰهِدِينَ
وَشَرَوْهُwasharawhuAnd they sold himبِثَمَنٍۭbithamaninfor a priceبَخْسٍۢbakhsinvery lowدَرَٰهِمَdarāhimadirhamsمَعْدُودَةٍۢmaʿdūdatinfewوَكَانُوا۟wakānūand they wereفِيهِfīhiabout himمِنَminaofٱلزَّٰهِدِينَl-zāhidīnathose keen to give up
And they sold him for a reduced price - a few dirhams - and they were, concerning him, of those content with little
⤳ Link 12:20
21
وَقَالَ ٱلَّذِى ٱشْتَرَىٰهُ مِن مِّصْرَ لِٱمْرَأَتِهِۦٓ أَكْرِمِى مَثْوَىٰهُ عَسَىٰٓ أَن يَنفَعَنَآ أَوْ نَتَّخِذَهُۥ وَلَدًۭا ۚ وَكَذَٰلِكَ مَكَّنَّا لِيُوسُفَ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ وَلِنُعَلِّمَهُۥ مِن تَأْوِيلِ ٱلْأَحَادِيثِ ۚ وَٱللَّهُ غَالِبٌ عَلَىٰٓ أَمْرِهِۦ وَلَـٰكِنَّ أَكْثَرَ ٱلنَّاسِ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ
وَقَالَwaqālaAnd saidٱلَّذِىalladhīthe one whoٱشْتَرَىٰهُish'tarāhubought himمِنminofمِّصْرَmiṣ'raEgyptلِٱمْرَأَتِهِۦٓli-im'ra-atihito his wifeأَكْرِمِىakrimīMake comfortableمَثْوَىٰهُmathwāhuhis stayعَسَىٰٓʿasāPerhapsأَنanthatيَنفَعَنَآyanfaʿanā(he) will benefit usأَوْaworنَتَّخِذَهُۥnattakhidhahuwe will take himوَلَدًۭا ۚwaladan(as) a sonوَكَذَٰلِكَwakadhālikaAnd thusمَكَّنَّاmakkannāWe establishedلِيُوسُفَliyūsufaYusufفِىinٱلْأَرْضِl-arḍithe landوَلِنُعَلِّمَهُۥwalinuʿallimahuthat We might teach himمِنmin(the) interpretation ofتَأْوِيلِtawīli(the) interpretation ofٱلْأَحَادِيثِ ۚl-aḥādīthithe eventsوَٱللَّهُwal-lahuAnd Allahغَالِبٌghālibun(is) PredominantعَلَىٰٓʿalāoverأَمْرِهِۦamrihiHis affairsوَلَـٰكِنَّwalākinnabutأَكْثَرَaktharamostٱلنَّاسِl-nāsi(of) the peopleلَا(do) notيَعْلَمُونَyaʿlamūnaknow
And the one from Egypt who bought him said to his wife, "Make his residence comfortable. Perhaps he will benefit us, or we will adopt him as a son." And thus, We established Joseph in the land that We might teach him the interpretation of events. And Allah is predominant over His affair, but most of the people do not know
⤳ Link 12:21
22
وَلَمَّا بَلَغَ أَشُدَّهُۥٓ ءَاتَيْنَـٰهُ حُكْمًۭا وَعِلْمًۭا ۚ وَكَذَٰلِكَ نَجْزِى ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ
وَلَمَّاwalammāAnd whenبَلَغَbalaghahe reachedأَشُدَّهُۥٓashuddahuhis maturityءَاتَيْنَـٰهُātaynāhuWe gave himحُكْمًۭاḥuk'manwisdomوَعِلْمًۭا ۚwaʿil'manand knowledgeوَكَذَٰلِكَwakadhālikaAnd thusنَجْزِىnajzīWe rewardٱلْمُحْسِنِينَl-muḥ'sinīnathe good-doers
And when Joseph reached maturity, We gave him judgment and knowledge. And thus We reward the doers of good
⤳ Link 12:22
23
وَرَٰوَدَتْهُ ٱلَّتِى هُوَ فِى بَيْتِهَا عَن نَّفْسِهِۦ وَغَلَّقَتِ ٱلْأَبْوَٰبَ وَقَالَتْ هَيْتَ لَكَ ۚ قَالَ مَعَاذَ ٱللَّهِ ۖ إِنَّهُۥ رَبِّىٓ أَحْسَنَ مَثْوَاىَ ۖ إِنَّهُۥ لَا يُفْلِحُ ٱلظَّـٰلِمُونَ
وَرَٰوَدَتْهُwarāwadathuAnd sought to seduce himٱلَّتِىallatīshe whoهُوَhuwahe (was)فِىinبَيْتِهَاbaytihāher houseعَنʿanfromنَّفْسِهِۦnafsihihis selfوَغَلَّقَتِwaghallaqatiAnd she closedٱلْأَبْوَٰبَl-abwābathe doorsوَقَالَتْwaqālatand she saidهَيْتَhaytaCome onلَكَ ۚlakayouقَالَqālaHe saidمَعَاذَmaʿādhaI seek refuge in Allahٱللَّهِ ۖl-lahiI seek refuge in AllahإِنَّهُۥinnahuIndeed, heرَبِّىٓrabbī(is) my lordأَحْسَنَaḥsana(who has) made goodمَثْوَاىَ ۖmathwāyamy stayإِنَّهُۥinnahuIndeedلَاnotيُفْلِحُyuf'liḥuwill succeedٱلظَّـٰلِمُونَl-ẓālimūnathe wrongdoers
And she, in whose house he was, sought to seduce him. She closed the doors and said, "Come, you." He said, "[I seek] the refuge of Allah. Indeed, he is my master, who has made good my residence. Indeed, wrongdoers will not succeed

وَلَقَدْ هَمَّتْ بِهِۦ ۖ وَهَمَّ بِهَا لَوْلَآ أَن رَّءَا بُرْهَـٰنَ رَبِّهِۦ ۚ كَذَٰلِكَ لِنَصْرِفَ عَنْهُ ٱلسُّوٓءَ وَٱلْفَحْشَآءَ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ مِنْ عِبَادِنَا ٱلْمُخْلَصِينَ
وَلَقَدْwalaqadAnd certainlyهَمَّتْhammatshe did desireبِهِۦ ۖbihihimوَهَمَّwahammaand he would have desiredبِهَاbihāherلَوْلَآlawlāif notأَنanthatرَّءَاraāhe sawبُرْهَـٰنَbur'hānathe proofرَبِّهِۦ ۚrabbihi(of) his LordكَذَٰلِكَkadhālikaThusلِنَصْرِفَlinaṣrifathat We might avertعَنْهُʿanhufrom himٱلسُّوٓءَl-sūathe evilوَٱلْفَحْشَآءَ ۚwal-faḥshāaand the immoralityإِنَّهُۥinnahuIndeed, heمِنْmin(was) ofعِبَادِنَاʿibādināOur slavesٱلْمُخْلَصِينَl-mukh'laṣīnathe sincere
And she certainly determined [to seduce] him, and he would have inclined to her had he not seen the proof of his Lord. And thus [it was] that We should avert from him evil and immorality. Indeed, he was of Our chosen servants

وَٱسْتَبَقَا ٱلْبَابَ وَقَدَّتْ قَمِيصَهُۥ مِن دُبُرٍۢ وَأَلْفَيَا سَيِّدَهَا لَدَا ٱلْبَابِ ۚ قَالَتْ مَا جَزَآءُ مَنْ أَرَادَ بِأَهْلِكَ سُوٓءًا إِلَّآ أَن يُسْجَنَ أَوْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌۭ
وَٱسْتَبَقَاwa-is'tabaqāAnd they both racedٱلْبَابَl-bāba(to) the doorوَقَدَّتْwaqaddatand she toreقَمِيصَهُۥqamīṣahuhis shirtمِنminfromدُبُرٍۢduburinthe backوَأَلْفَيَاwa-alfayāand they both foundسَيِّدَهَاsayyidahāher husbandلَدَاladāatٱلْبَابِ ۚl-bābithe doorقَالَتْqālatShe saidمَاWhatجَزَآءُjazāu(is) the recompenseمَنْman(of one) whoأَرَادَarādaintendedبِأَهْلِكَbi-ahlikafor your wifeسُوٓءًاsūanevilإِلَّآillāexceptأَنanthatيُسْجَنَyus'janahe be imprisonedأَوْaworعَذَابٌʿadhābuna punishmentأَلِيمٌۭalīmunpainful
And they both raced to the door, and she tore his shirt from the back, and they found her husband at the door. She said, "What is the recompense of one who intended evil for your wife but that he be imprisoned or a painful punishment

قَالَ هِىَ رَٰوَدَتْنِى عَن نَّفْسِى ۚ وَشَهِدَ شَاهِدٌۭ مِّنْ أَهْلِهَآ إِن كَانَ قَمِيصُهُۥ قُدَّ مِن قُبُلٍۢ فَصَدَقَتْ وَهُوَ مِنَ ٱلْكَـٰذِبِينَ
قَالَqālaHe saidهِىَhiyaSheرَٰوَدَتْنِىrāwadatnīsought to seduce meعَنʿanaboutنَّفْسِى ۚnafsīmyselfوَشَهِدَwashahidaAnd testifiedشَاهِدٌۭshāhiduna witnessمِّنْminofأَهْلِهَآahlihāher familyإِنinIfكَانَkāna[is]قَمِيصُهُۥqamīṣuhuhis shirtقُدَّqudda(is) tornمِنminfromقُبُلٍۢqubulinthe frontفَصَدَقَتْfaṣadaqatthen she has spoken the truthوَهُوَwahuwaand heمِنَmina(is) ofٱلْكَـٰذِبِينَl-kādhibīnathe liars
[Joseph] said, "It was she who sought to seduce me." And a witness from her family testified. "If his shirt is torn from the front, then she has told the truth, and he is of the liars

وَإِن كَانَ قَمِيصُهُۥ قُدَّ مِن دُبُرٍۢ فَكَذَبَتْ وَهُوَ مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰدِقِينَ
وَإِنwa-inBut ifكَانَkāna[is]قَمِيصُهُۥqamīṣuhuhis shirtقُدَّqudda(is) tornمِنminfromدُبُرٍۢduburin(the) backفَكَذَبَتْfakadhabatthen she has liedوَهُوَwahuwaand heمِنَmina(is) ofٱلصَّـٰدِقِينَl-ṣādiqīnathe truthful
But if his shirt is torn from the back, then she has lied, and he is of the truthful

28
فَلَمَّا رَءَا قَمِيصَهُۥ قُدَّ مِن دُبُرٍۢ قَالَ إِنَّهُۥ مِن كَيْدِكُنَّ ۖ إِنَّ كَيْدَكُنَّ عَظِيمٌۭ
فَلَمَّاfalammāSo whenرَءَاraāhe sawقَمِيصَهُۥqamīṣahuhis shirtقُدَّquddatornمِنminfromدُبُرٍۢduburin(the) backقَالَqālahe saidإِنَّهُۥinnahuIndeed, itمِنmin(is) ofكَيْدِكُنَّ ۖkaydikunnayour plotإِنَّinnaIndeedكَيْدَكُنَّkaydakunnayour plotعَظِيمٌۭʿaẓīmun(is) great
So when her husband saw his shirt torn from the back, he said, "Indeed, it is of the women's plan. Indeed, your plan is great

يُوسُفُ أَعْرِضْ عَنْ هَـٰذَا ۚ وَٱسْتَغْفِرِى لِذَنۢبِكِ ۖ إِنَّكِ كُنتِ مِنَ ٱلْخَاطِـِٔينَ
يُوسُفُyūsufuYusufأَعْرِضْaʿriḍturn awayعَنْʿanfromهَـٰذَا ۚhādhāthisوَٱسْتَغْفِرِىwa-is'taghfirīAnd ask forgivenessلِذَنۢبِكِ ۖlidhanbikifor your sinإِنَّكِinnakiIndeed, youكُنتِkuntiareمِنَminaofٱلْخَاطِـِٔينَl-khāṭiīnathe sinful
Joseph, ignore this. And, [my wife], ask forgiveness for your sin. Indeed, you were of the sinful

۞ وَقَالَ نِسْوَةٌۭ فِى ٱلْمَدِينَةِ ٱمْرَأَتُ ٱلْعَزِيزِ تُرَٰوِدُ فَتَىٰهَا عَن نَّفْسِهِۦ ۖ قَدْ شَغَفَهَا حُبًّا ۖ إِنَّا لَنَرَىٰهَا فِى ضَلَـٰلٍۢ مُّبِينٍۢ
۞ وَقَالَwaqālaAnd saidنِسْوَةٌۭnis'watunwomenفِىinٱلْمَدِينَةِl-madīnatithe cityٱمْرَأَتُim'ra-atuThe wife ofٱلْعَزِيزِl-ʿazīziAzizتُرَٰوِدُturāwidu(is) seeking to seduceفَتَىٰهَاfatāhāher slave boyعَنʿanaboutنَّفْسِهِۦ ۖnafsihihimselfقَدْqadindeedشَغَفَهَاshaghafahāhe has impassioned herحُبًّا ۖḥubban(with) loveإِنَّاinnāIndeed, weلَنَرَىٰهَاlanarāhā[we] surely see herفِىinضَلَـٰلٍۢḍalālinan errorمُّبِينٍۢmubīninclear
And women in the city said, "The wife of al-'Azeez is seeking to seduce her slave boy; he has impassioned her with love. Indeed, we see her [to be] in clear error

فَلَمَّا سَمِعَتْ بِمَكْرِهِنَّ أَرْسَلَتْ إِلَيْهِنَّ وَأَعْتَدَتْ لَهُنَّ مُتَّكَـًۭٔا وَءَاتَتْ كُلَّ وَٰحِدَةٍۢ مِّنْهُنَّ سِكِّينًۭا وَقَالَتِ ٱخْرُجْ عَلَيْهِنَّ ۖ فَلَمَّا رَأَيْنَهُۥٓ أَكْبَرْنَهُۥ وَقَطَّعْنَ أَيْدِيَهُنَّ وَقُلْنَ حَـٰشَ لِلَّهِ مَا هَـٰذَا بَشَرًا إِنْ هَـٰذَآ إِلَّا مَلَكٌۭ كَرِيمٌۭ
فَلَمَّاfalammāSo whenسَمِعَتْsamiʿatshe heardبِمَكْرِهِنَّbimakrihinnaof their schemingأَرْسَلَتْarsalatshe sentإِلَيْهِنَّilayhinnafor themوَأَعْتَدَتْwa-aʿtadatand she preparedلَهُنَّlahunnafor themمُتَّكَـًۭٔاmuttaka-ana banquetوَءَاتَتْwaātatand she gaveكُلَّkullaeachوَٰحِدَةٍۢwāḥidatinoneمِّنْهُنَّmin'hunnaof themسِكِّينًۭاsikkīnana knifeوَقَالَتِwaqālatiand she saidٱخْرُجْukh'rujCome outعَلَيْهِنَّ ۖʿalayhinnabefore themفَلَمَّاfalammāThen whenرَأَيْنَهُۥٓra-aynahuthey saw himأَكْبَرْنَهُۥakbarnahuthey greatly admired himوَقَطَّعْنَwaqaṭṭaʿnaand cutأَيْدِيَهُنَّaydiyahunnatheir handsوَقُلْنَwaqul'nathey saidحَـٰشَḥāshaForbidلِلَّهِlillahiAllahمَاnotهَـٰذَاhādhā(is) thisبَشَرًاbasharana manإِنْinnotهَـٰذَآhādhā(is) thisإِلَّاillābutمَلَكٌۭmalakunan angelكَرِيمٌۭkarīmunnoble
So when she heard of their scheming, she sent for them and prepared for them a banquet and gave each one of them a knife and said [to Joseph], "Come out before them." And when they saw him, they greatly admired him and cut their hands and said, "Perfect is Allah! This is not a man; this is none but a noble angel

قَالَتْ فَذَٰلِكُنَّ ٱلَّذِى لُمْتُنَّنِى فِيهِ ۖ وَلَقَدْ رَٰوَدتُّهُۥ عَن نَّفْسِهِۦ فَٱسْتَعْصَمَ ۖ وَلَئِن لَّمْ يَفْعَلْ مَآ ءَامُرُهُۥ لَيُسْجَنَنَّ وَلَيَكُونًۭا مِّنَ ٱلصَّـٰغِرِينَ
قَالَتْqālatShe saidفَذَٰلِكُنَّfadhālikunnaThatٱلَّذِىalladhī(is) the oneلُمْتُنَّنِىlum'tunnanīyou blamed meفِيهِ ۖfīhiabout himوَلَقَدْwalaqadAnd certainlyرَٰوَدتُّهُۥrāwadttuhuI sought to seduce himعَنʿan[from]نَّفْسِهِۦnafsihi[himself]فَٱسْتَعْصَمَ ۖfa-is'taʿṣamabut he saved himselfوَلَئِنwala-inand ifلَّمْlamnotيَفْعَلْyafʿalhe doesمَآwhatءَامُرُهُۥāmuruhuI order himلَيُسْجَنَنَّlayus'janannasurely, he will be imprisonedوَلَيَكُونًۭاwalayakūnanand certainly will beمِّنَminaofٱلصَّـٰغِرِينَl-ṣāghirīnathose who are disgraced
She said, "That is the one about whom you blamed me. And I certainly sought to seduce him, but he firmly refused; and if he will not do what I order him, he will surely be imprisoned and will be of those debased

33
قَالَ رَبِّ ٱلسِّجْنُ أَحَبُّ إِلَىَّ مِمَّا يَدْعُونَنِىٓ إِلَيْهِ ۖ وَإِلَّا تَصْرِفْ عَنِّى كَيْدَهُنَّ أَصْبُ إِلَيْهِنَّ وَأَكُن مِّنَ ٱلْجَـٰهِلِينَ
قَالَqālaHe saidرَبِّrabbiMy Lordٱلسِّجْنُl-sij'nuthe prisonأَحَبُّaḥabbu(is) dearerإِلَىَّilayyato meمِمَّاmimmāthan whatيَدْعُونَنِىٓyadʿūnanīthey invite meإِلَيْهِ ۖilayhito itوَإِلَّاwa-illāAnd unlessتَصْرِفْtaṣrifYou turn awayعَنِّىʿannīfrom meكَيْدَهُنَّkaydahunnatheir plotأَصْبُaṣbuI might inclineإِلَيْهِنَّilayhinnatowards themوَأَكُنwa-akunand [I] beمِّنَminaofٱلْجَـٰهِلِينَl-jāhilīnathe ignorant
He said, "My Lord, prison is more to my liking than that to which they invite me. And if You do not avert from me their plan, I might incline toward them and [thus] be of the ignorant

34
فَٱسْتَجَابَ لَهُۥ رَبُّهُۥ فَصَرَفَ عَنْهُ كَيْدَهُنَّ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ ٱلسَّمِيعُ ٱلْعَلِيمُ
فَٱسْتَجَابَfa-is'tajābaSo respondedلَهُۥlahuto himرَبُّهُۥrabbuhuhis Lordفَصَرَفَfaṣarafaand turned awayعَنْهُʿanhufrom himكَيْدَهُنَّ ۚkaydahunnatheir plotإِنَّهُۥinnahuIndeed, [He]هُوَhuwaHeٱلسَّمِيعُl-samīʿu(is) All-Hearerٱلْعَلِيمُl-ʿalīmuAll-Knower
So his Lord responded to him and averted from him their plan. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Knowing

ثُمَّ بَدَا لَهُم مِّنۢ بَعْدِ مَا رَأَوُا۟ ٱلْـَٔايَـٰتِ لَيَسْجُنُنَّهُۥ حَتَّىٰ حِينٍۢ
ثُمَّthummaThenبَدَاbadā(it) appearedلَهُمlahumto themمِّنۢminafterبَعْدِbaʿdiafterمَا[what]رَأَوُا۟ra-awūthey had seenٱلْـَٔايَـٰتِl-āyātithe signsلَيَسْجُنُنَّهُۥlayasjununnahusurely they should imprison himحَتَّىٰḥattāuntilحِينٍۢḥīnina time
Then it appeared to them after they had seen the signs that al-'Azeez should surely imprison him for a time

36
وَدَخَلَ مَعَهُ ٱلسِّجْنَ فَتَيَانِ ۖ قَالَ أَحَدُهُمَآ إِنِّىٓ أَرَىٰنِىٓ أَعْصِرُ خَمْرًۭا ۖ وَقَالَ ٱلْـَٔاخَرُ إِنِّىٓ أَرَىٰنِىٓ أَحْمِلُ فَوْقَ رَأْسِى خُبْزًۭا تَأْكُلُ ٱلطَّيْرُ مِنْهُ ۖ نَبِّئْنَا بِتَأْوِيلِهِۦٓ ۖ إِنَّا نَرَىٰكَ مِنَ ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ
وَدَخَلَwadakhalaAnd enteredمَعَهُmaʿahuwith himٱلسِّجْنَl-sij'na(in) the prisonفَتَيَانِ ۖfatayānitwo young menقَالَqālaSaidأَحَدُهُمَآaḥaduhumāone of themإِنِّىٓinnīIndeed, Iأَرَىٰنِىٓarānī[I] see myselfأَعْصِرُaʿṣirupressingخَمْرًۭا ۖkhamranwineوَقَالَwaqālaAnd saidٱلْـَٔاخَرُl-ākharuthe otherإِنِّىٓinnīIndeed, Iأَرَىٰنِىٓarānī[I] see myselfأَحْمِلُaḥmilu[I am] carryingفَوْقَfawqaoverرَأْسِىrasīmy headخُبْزًۭاkhub'zanbreadتَأْكُلُtakulu(were) eatingٱلطَّيْرُl-ṭayruthe birdsمِنْهُ ۖmin'hufrom itنَبِّئْنَاnabbi'nāInform usبِتَأْوِيلِهِۦٓ ۖbitawīlihiof its interpretationإِنَّاinnāindeed, weنَرَىٰكَnarāka[we] see youمِنَminaofٱلْمُحْسِنِينَl-muḥ'sinīnathe good-doers
And there entered the prison with him two young men. One of them said, "Indeed, I have seen myself [in a dream] pressing wine." The other said, "Indeed, I have seen myself carrying upon my head [some] bread, from which the birds were eating. Inform us of its interpretation; indeed, we see you to be of those who do good

قَالَ لَا يَأْتِيكُمَا طَعَامٌۭ تُرْزَقَانِهِۦٓ إِلَّا نَبَّأْتُكُمَا بِتَأْوِيلِهِۦ قَبْلَ أَن يَأْتِيَكُمَا ۚ ذَٰلِكُمَا مِمَّا عَلَّمَنِى رَبِّىٓ ۚ إِنِّى تَرَكْتُ مِلَّةَ قَوْمٍۢ لَّا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِٱللَّهِ وَهُم بِٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ هُمْ كَـٰفِرُونَ
قَالَqālaHe saidلَاNotيَأْتِيكُمَاyatīkumā(will) come to both of youطَعَامٌۭṭaʿāmunfoodتُرْزَقَانِهِۦٓtur'zaqānihiyou are provided withإِلَّاillābutنَبَّأْتُكُمَاnabbatukumāI will inform both of youبِتَأْوِيلِهِۦbitawīlihiof its interpretationقَبْلَqablabeforeأَنan[that]يَأْتِيَكُمَا ۚyatiyakumā[it] comes to both of youذَٰلِكُمَاdhālikumāThatمِمَّاmimmā(is) of whatعَلَّمَنِىʿallamanīhas taught meرَبِّىٓ ۚrabbīmy LordإِنِّىinnīIndeed, Iتَرَكْتُtaraktu[I] abandonمِلَّةَmillata(the) religionقَوْمٍۢqawmin(of) a peopleلَّاnotيُؤْمِنُونَyu'minūnathey believeبِٱللَّهِbil-lahiin Allahوَهُمwahumand theyبِٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِbil-ākhiratiin the Hereafterهُمْhum[they]كَـٰفِرُونَkāfirūna(are) disbelievers
He said, "You will not receive food that is provided to you except that I will inform you of its interpretation before it comes to you. That is from what my Lord has taught me. Indeed, I have left the religion of a people who do not believe in Allah, and they, in the Hereafter, are disbelievers

38
وَٱتَّبَعْتُ مِلَّةَ ءَابَآءِىٓ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ وَإِسْحَـٰقَ وَيَعْقُوبَ ۚ مَا كَانَ لَنَآ أَن نُّشْرِكَ بِٱللَّهِ مِن شَىْءٍۢ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ مِن فَضْلِ ٱللَّهِ عَلَيْنَا وَعَلَى ٱلنَّاسِ وَلَـٰكِنَّ أَكْثَرَ ٱلنَّاسِ لَا يَشْكُرُونَ
وَٱتَّبَعْتُwa-ittabaʿtuAnd I followمِلَّةَmillata(the) religionءَابَآءِىٓābāī(of) my forefathersإِبْرَٰهِيمَib'rāhīmaIbrahimوَإِسْحَـٰقَwa-is'ḥāqaand Isaacوَيَعْقُوبَ ۚwayaʿqūbaand YaqubمَاNotكَانَkānawasلَنَآlanāfor usأَنanthatنُّشْرِكَnush'rikawe associateبِٱللَّهِbil-lahiwith Allahمِنminanyشَىْءٍۢ ۚshayinthingذَٰلِكَdhālikaThatمِنmin(is) fromفَضْلِfaḍli(the) Graceٱللَّهِl-lahi(of) Allahعَلَيْنَاʿalaynāupon usوَعَلَىwaʿalāand uponٱلنَّاسِl-nāsithe mankindوَلَـٰكِنَّwalākinnabutأَكْثَرَaktharamostٱلنَّاسِl-nāsi(of) the menلَا(are) notيَشْكُرُونَyashkurūnagrateful
And I have followed the religion of my fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. And it was not for us to associate anything with Allah. That is from the favor of Allah upon us and upon the people, but most of the people are not grateful

39
يَـٰصَـٰحِبَىِ ٱلسِّجْنِ ءَأَرْبَابٌۭ مُّتَفَرِّقُونَ خَيْرٌ أَمِ ٱللَّهُ ٱلْوَٰحِدُ ٱلْقَهَّارُ
يَـٰصَـٰحِبَىِyāṣāḥibayiO my two companionsٱلسِّجْنِl-sij'ni(of) the prisonءَأَرْبَابٌۭa-arbābunAre lordsمُّتَفَرِّقُونَmutafarriqūnaseparateخَيْرٌkhayrunbetterأَمِamiorٱللَّهُl-lahuAllahٱلْوَٰحِدُl-wāḥiduthe Oneٱلْقَهَّارُl-qahāruthe Irresistible
O [my] two companions of prison, are separate lords better or Allah, the One, the Prevailing

40
مَا تَعْبُدُونَ مِن دُونِهِۦٓ إِلَّآ أَسْمَآءًۭ سَمَّيْتُمُوهَآ أَنتُمْ وَءَابَآؤُكُم مَّآ أَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ بِهَا مِن سُلْطَـٰنٍ ۚ إِنِ ٱلْحُكْمُ إِلَّا لِلَّهِ ۚ أَمَرَ أَلَّا تَعْبُدُوٓا۟ إِلَّآ إِيَّاهُ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ ٱلدِّينُ ٱلْقَيِّمُ وَلَـٰكِنَّ أَكْثَرَ ٱلنَّاسِ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ
مَاNotتَعْبُدُونَtaʿbudūnayou worshipمِنminbesides Himدُونِهِۦٓdūnihibesides Himإِلَّآillābutأَسْمَآءًۭasmāannamesسَمَّيْتُمُوهَآsammaytumūhāwhich you have named themأَنتُمْantumyouوَءَابَآؤُكُمwaābāukumand your forefathersمَّآnotأَنزَلَanzala(has) sent downٱللَّهُl-lahuAllahبِهَاbihāfor itمِنminanyسُلْطَـٰنٍ ۚsul'ṭāninauthorityإِنِiniNotٱلْحُكْمُl-ḥuk'mu(is) the commandإِلَّاillābutلِلَّهِ ۚlillahifor AllahأَمَرَamaraHe has commandedأَلَّاallāthat notتَعْبُدُوٓا۟taʿbudūyou worshipإِلَّآillābutإِيَّاهُ ۚiyyāhuHim AloneذَٰلِكَdhālikaThatٱلدِّينُl-dīnu(is) the religionٱلْقَيِّمُl-qayimuthe rightوَلَـٰكِنَّwalākinnabutأَكْثَرَaktharamostٱلنَّاسِl-nāsi[the] menلَا(do) notيَعْلَمُونَyaʿlamūnaknow
You worship not besides Him except [mere] names you have named them, you and your fathers, for which Allah has sent down no authority. Legislation is not but for Allah. He has commanded that you worship not except Him. That is the correct religion, but most of the people do not know

41
يَـٰصَـٰحِبَىِ ٱلسِّجْنِ أَمَّآ أَحَدُكُمَا فَيَسْقِى رَبَّهُۥ خَمْرًۭا ۖ وَأَمَّا ٱلْـَٔاخَرُ فَيُصْلَبُ فَتَأْكُلُ ٱلطَّيْرُ مِن رَّأْسِهِۦ ۚ قُضِىَ ٱلْأَمْرُ ٱلَّذِى فِيهِ تَسْتَفْتِيَانِ
يَـٰصَـٰحِبَىِyāṣāḥibayiO my two companionsٱلسِّجْنِl-sij'ni(of) the prisonأَمَّآammāAs forأَحَدُكُمَاaḥadukumāone of youفَيَسْقِىfayasqīhe will give drinkرَبَّهُۥrabbahu(to) his masterخَمْرًۭا ۖkhamranwineوَأَمَّاwa-ammāand as forٱلْـَٔاخَرُl-ākharuthe otherفَيُصْلَبُfayuṣ'labuhe will be crucifiedفَتَأْكُلُfatakuluand will eatٱلطَّيْرُl-ṭayruthe birdsمِنminfromرَّأْسِهِۦ ۚrasihihis headقُضِىَquḍiyaHas been decreedٱلْأَمْرُl-amruthe matterٱلَّذِىalladhīabout whichفِيهِfīhiabout whichتَسْتَفْتِيَانِtastaftiyāniyou both inquire
O two companions of prison, as for one of you, he will give drink to his master of wine; but as for the other, he will be crucified, and the birds will eat from his head. The matter has been decreed about which you both inquire

42
وَقَالَ لِلَّذِى ظَنَّ أَنَّهُۥ نَاجٍۢ مِّنْهُمَا ٱذْكُرْنِى عِندَ رَبِّكَ فَأَنسَىٰهُ ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنُ ذِكْرَ رَبِّهِۦ فَلَبِثَ فِى ٱلسِّجْنِ بِضْعَ سِنِينَ
وَقَالَwaqālaAnd he saidلِلَّذِىlilladhīto the one whomظَنَّẓannahe thoughtأَنَّهُۥannahuthat heنَاجٍۢnājin(would be) savedمِّنْهُمَاmin'humāof both of themٱذْكُرْنِىudh'kur'nīMention meعِندَʿindatoرَبِّكَrabbikayour masterفَأَنسَىٰهُfa-ansāhuBut made him forgetٱلشَّيْطَـٰنُl-shayṭānuthe Shaitaanذِكْرَdhik'ra(the) mentionرَبِّهِۦrabbihi(to) his masterفَلَبِثَfalabithaso he remainedفِىinٱلسِّجْنِl-sij'nithe prisonبِضْعَbiḍ'ʿaseveralسِنِينَsinīnayears
And he said to the one whom he knew would go free, "Mention me before your master." But Satan made him forget the mention [to] his master, and Joseph remained in prison several years

43
وَقَالَ ٱلْمَلِكُ إِنِّىٓ أَرَىٰ سَبْعَ بَقَرَٰتٍۢ سِمَانٍۢ يَأْكُلُهُنَّ سَبْعٌ عِجَافٌۭ وَسَبْعَ سُنۢبُلَـٰتٍ خُضْرٍۢ وَأُخَرَ يَابِسَـٰتٍۢ ۖ يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلْمَلَأُ أَفْتُونِى فِى رُءْيَـٰىَ إِن كُنتُمْ لِلرُّءْيَا تَعْبُرُونَ
وَقَالَwaqālaAnd saidٱلْمَلِكُl-malikuthe kingإِنِّىٓinnīIndeed, Iأَرَىٰarā[I] have seenسَبْعَsabʿasevenبَقَرَٰتٍۢbaqarātincowsسِمَانٍۢsimāninfatيَأْكُلُهُنَّyakuluhunnaeating themسَبْعٌsabʿunsevenعِجَافٌۭʿijāfunlean onesوَسَبْعَwasabʿaand sevenسُنۢبُلَـٰتٍsunbulātinears (of corn)خُضْرٍۢkhuḍ'ringreenوَأُخَرَwa-ukharaand othersيَابِسَـٰتٍۢ ۖyābisātindryيَـٰٓأَيُّهَاyāayyuhāOٱلْمَلَأُl-mala-uchiefsأَفْتُونِىaftūnīExplain to meفِىaboutرُءْيَـٰىَru'yāyamy visionإِنinifكُنتُمْkuntumyou canلِلرُّءْيَاlilrru'yāof visionsتَعْبُرُونَtaʿburūnainterpret
And [subsequently] the king said, "Indeed, I have seen [in a dream] seven fat cows being eaten by seven [that were] lean, and seven green spikes [of grain] and others [that were] dry. O eminent ones, explain to me my vision, if you should interpret visions

44
قَالُوٓا۟ أَضْغَـٰثُ أَحْلَـٰمٍۢ ۖ وَمَا نَحْنُ بِتَأْوِيلِ ٱلْأَحْلَـٰمِ بِعَـٰلِمِينَ
قَالُوٓا۟qālūThey saidأَضْغَـٰثُaḍghāthuConfusedأَحْلَـٰمٍۢ ۖaḥlāmindreamsوَمَاwamāand notنَحْنُnaḥnuweبِتَأْوِيلِbitawīli(are) in the interpretationٱلْأَحْلَـٰمِl-aḥlāmi(of) the dreamsبِعَـٰلِمِينَbiʿālimīnalearned
They said, "[It is but] a mixture of false dreams, and we are not learned in the interpretation of dreams

45
وَقَالَ ٱلَّذِى نَجَا مِنْهُمَا وَٱدَّكَرَ بَعْدَ أُمَّةٍ أَنَا۠ أُنَبِّئُكُم بِتَأْوِيلِهِۦ فَأَرْسِلُونِ
وَقَالَwaqālaBut saidٱلَّذِىalladhīthe one whoنَجَاnajāwas savedمِنْهُمَاmin'humāof the twoوَٱدَّكَرَwa-iddakaraand rememberedبَعْدَbaʿdaafterأُمَّةٍummatina periodأَنَا۠anāIأُنَبِّئُكُمunabbi-ukum[I] will inform youبِتَأْوِيلِهِۦbitawīlihiof its interpretationفَأَرْسِلُونِfa-arsilūniso send me forth
But the one who was freed and remembered after a time said, "I will inform you of its interpretation, so send me forth

يُوسُفُ أَيُّهَا ٱلصِّدِّيقُ أَفْتِنَا فِى سَبْعِ بَقَرَٰتٍۢ سِمَانٍۢ يَأْكُلُهُنَّ سَبْعٌ عِجَافٌۭ وَسَبْعِ سُنۢبُلَـٰتٍ خُضْرٍۢ وَأُخَرَ يَابِسَـٰتٍۢ لَّعَلِّىٓ أَرْجِعُ إِلَى ٱلنَّاسِ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَعْلَمُونَ
يُوسُفُyūsufuYusufأَيُّهَاayyuhāOٱلصِّدِّيقُl-ṣidīquthe truthful oneأَفْتِنَاaftināExplain to usفِىaboutسَبْعِsabʿi(the) sevenبَقَرَٰتٍۢbaqarātincowsسِمَانٍۢsimāninfatيَأْكُلُهُنَّyakuluhunnaeating themسَبْعٌsabʿunsevenعِجَافٌۭʿijāfunlean onesوَسَبْعِwasabʿiand sevenسُنۢبُلَـٰتٍsunbulātinears (of corn)خُضْرٍۢkhuḍ'ringreenوَأُخَرَwa-ukharaand otherيَابِسَـٰتٍۢyābisātindryلَّعَلِّىٓlaʿallīthat I mayأَرْجِعُarjiʿureturnإِلَىilātoٱلنَّاسِl-nāsithe peopleلَعَلَّهُمْlaʿallahumso that they mayيَعْلَمُونَyaʿlamūnaknow
[He said], "Joseph, O man of truth, explain to us about seven fat cows eaten by seven [that were] lean, and seven green spikes [of grain] and others [that were] dry - that I may return to the people; perhaps they will know [about you]

قَالَ تَزْرَعُونَ سَبْعَ سِنِينَ دَأَبًۭا فَمَا حَصَدتُّمْ فَذَرُوهُ فِى سُنۢبُلِهِۦٓ إِلَّا قَلِيلًۭا مِّمَّا تَأْكُلُونَ
قَالَqālaHe saidتَزْرَعُونَtazraʿūnaYou will sowسَبْعَsabʿa(for) sevenسِنِينَsinīnayearsدَأَبًۭاda-abanas usualفَمَاfamāand that whichحَصَدتُّمْḥaṣadttumyou reapفَذَرُوهُfadharūhuso leave itفِىinسُنۢبُلِهِۦٓsunbulihiits earsإِلَّاillāexceptقَلِيلًۭاqalīlana littleمِّمَّاmimmāfrom whichتَأْكُلُونَtakulūnayou (will) eat
[Joseph] said, "You will plant for seven years consecutively; and what you harvest leave in its spikes, except a little from which you will eat

48
ثُمَّ يَأْتِى مِنۢ بَعْدِ ذَٰلِكَ سَبْعٌۭ شِدَادٌۭ يَأْكُلْنَ مَا قَدَّمْتُمْ لَهُنَّ إِلَّا قَلِيلًۭا مِّمَّا تُحْصِنُونَ
ثُمَّthummaThenيَأْتِىyatīwill comeمِنۢminafterبَعْدِbaʿdiafterذَٰلِكَdhālikathatسَبْعٌۭsabʿunsevenشِدَادٌۭshidādunhard (years)يَأْكُلْنَyakul'na(which will) consumeمَاwhatقَدَّمْتُمْqaddamtumyou advancedلَهُنَّlahunnafor themإِلَّاillāexceptقَلِيلًۭاqalīlana littleمِّمَّاmimmāof whatتُحْصِنُونَtuḥ'ṣinūnayou (will) store
Then will come after that seven difficult [years] which will consume what you saved for them, except a little from which you will store

49
ثُمَّ يَأْتِى مِنۢ بَعْدِ ذَٰلِكَ عَامٌۭ فِيهِ يُغَاثُ ٱلنَّاسُ وَفِيهِ يَعْصِرُونَ
ثُمَّthummaThenيَأْتِىyatīwill comeمِنۢminafterبَعْدِbaʿdiafterذَٰلِكَdhālikathatعَامٌۭʿāmuna yearفِيهِfīhiin itيُغَاثُyughāthuwill be given abundant rainٱلنَّاسُl-nāsuthe peopleوَفِيهِwafīhiand in itيَعْصِرُونَyaʿṣirūnathey will press
Then will come after that a year in which the people will be given rain and in which they will press [olives and grapes]

50
وَقَالَ ٱلْمَلِكُ ٱئْتُونِى بِهِۦ ۖ فَلَمَّا جَآءَهُ ٱلرَّسُولُ قَالَ ٱرْجِعْ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ فَسْـَٔلْهُ مَا بَالُ ٱلنِّسْوَةِ ٱلَّـٰتِى قَطَّعْنَ أَيْدِيَهُنَّ ۚ إِنَّ رَبِّى بِكَيْدِهِنَّ عَلِيمٌۭ
وَقَالَwaqālaAnd saidٱلْمَلِكُl-malikuthe kingٱئْتُونِىi'tūnīBring him to meبِهِۦ ۖbihiBring him to meفَلَمَّاfalammāBut whenجَآءَهُjāahucame to himٱلرَّسُولُl-rasūluthe messengerقَالَqālahe saidٱرْجِعْir'jiʿReturnإِلَىٰilātoرَبِّكَrabbikayour lordفَسْـَٔلْهُfasalhuand ask himمَاwhatبَالُbālu(is the) caseٱلنِّسْوَةِl-nis'wati(of) the womenٱلَّـٰتِىallātīwhoقَطَّعْنَqaṭṭaʿnacutأَيْدِيَهُنَّ ۚaydiyahunnatheir handsإِنَّinnaIndeedرَبِّىrabbīmy Lordبِكَيْدِهِنَّbikaydihinnaof their plotعَلِيمٌۭʿalīmun(is) All-Knower
And the king said, "Bring him to me." But when the messenger came to him, [Joseph] said, "Return to your master and ask him what is the case of the women who cut their hands. Indeed, my Lord is Knowing of their plan

قَالَ مَا خَطْبُكُنَّ إِذْ رَٰوَدتُّنَّ يُوسُفَ عَن نَّفْسِهِۦ ۚ قُلْنَ حَـٰشَ لِلَّهِ مَا عَلِمْنَا عَلَيْهِ مِن سُوٓءٍۢ ۚ قَالَتِ ٱمْرَأَتُ ٱلْعَزِيزِ ٱلْـَٔـٰنَ حَصْحَصَ ٱلْحَقُّ أَنَا۠ رَٰوَدتُّهُۥ عَن نَّفْسِهِۦ وَإِنَّهُۥ لَمِنَ ٱلصَّـٰدِقِينَ
قَالَqālaHe saidمَاWhatخَطْبُكُنَّkhaṭbukunna(was) your affairإِذْidhwhenرَٰوَدتُّنَّrāwadttunnayou sought to seduceيُوسُفَyūsufaYusufعَنʿanfromنَّفْسِهِۦ ۚnafsihihimselfقُلْنَqul'naThey saidحَـٰشَḥāshaAllah forbidلِلَّهِlillahiAllah forbidمَاNotعَلِمْنَاʿalim'nāwe knowعَلَيْهِʿalayhiabout himمِنminanyسُوٓءٍۢ ۚsūinevilقَالَتِqālatiSaidٱمْرَأَتُim'ra-atu(the) wifeٱلْعَزِيزِl-ʿazīzi(of) Azizٱلْـَٔـٰنَl-ānaNowحَصْحَصَḥaṣḥaṣa(is) manifestٱلْحَقُّl-ḥaquthe truthأَنَا۠anāIرَٰوَدتُّهُۥrāwadttuhusought to seduce himعَنʿanfromنَّفْسِهِۦnafsihihimselfوَإِنَّهُۥwa-innahuand indeed, heلَمِنَlamina(is) surely ofٱلصَّـٰدِقِينَl-ṣādiqīnathe truthful
Said [the king to the women], "What was your condition when you sought to seduce Joseph?" They said, "Perfect is Allah! We know about him no evil." The wife of al-'Azeez said, "Now the truth has become evident. It was I who sought to seduce him, and indeed, he is of the truthful

52
ذَٰلِكَ لِيَعْلَمَ أَنِّى لَمْ أَخُنْهُ بِٱلْغَيْبِ وَأَنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا يَهْدِى كَيْدَ ٱلْخَآئِنِينَ
ذَٰلِكَdhālikaThatلِيَعْلَمَliyaʿlamahe may knowأَنِّىannīthat Iلَمْlamnotأَخُنْهُakhun'hu[I] betray himبِٱلْغَيْبِbil-ghaybiin secretوَأَنَّwa-annaand thatٱللَّهَl-lahaAllahلَا(does) notيَهْدِىyahdīguideكَيْدَkayda(the) planٱلْخَآئِنِينَl-khāinīna(of) the betrayers
That is so al-'Azeez will know that I did not betray him in [his] absence and that Allah does not guide the plan of betrayers
⤳ Link 12:52
53
۞ وَمَآ أُبَرِّئُ نَفْسِىٓ ۚ إِنَّ ٱلنَّفْسَ لَأَمَّارَةٌۢ بِٱلسُّوٓءِ إِلَّا مَا رَحِمَ رَبِّىٓ ۚ إِنَّ رَبِّى غَفُورٌۭ رَّحِيمٌۭ
۞ وَمَآwamāAnd notأُبَرِّئُubarri-uI absolveنَفْسِىٓ ۚnafsīmyselfإِنَّinnaIndeedٱلنَّفْسَl-nafsathe soulلَأَمَّارَةٌۢla-ammāratun(is) a certain enjoinerبِٱلسُّوٓءِbil-sūiof evilإِلَّاillāunlessمَا[that]رَحِمَraḥimabestows Mercyرَبِّىٓ ۚrabbīmy LordإِنَّinnaIndeedرَبِّىrabbīmy Lordغَفُورٌۭghafūrun(is) Oft-ForgivingرَّحِيمٌۭraḥīmunMost Merciful
And I do not acquit myself. Indeed, the soul is a persistent enjoiner of evil, except those upon which my Lord has mercy. Indeed, my Lord is Forgiving and Merciful

54
وَقَالَ ٱلْمَلِكُ ٱئْتُونِى بِهِۦٓ أَسْتَخْلِصْهُ لِنَفْسِى ۖ فَلَمَّا كَلَّمَهُۥ قَالَ إِنَّكَ ٱلْيَوْمَ لَدَيْنَا مَكِينٌ أَمِينٌۭ
وَقَالَwaqālaAnd saidٱلْمَلِكُl-malikuthe kingٱئْتُونِىi'tūnīBring him to meبِهِۦٓbihiBring him to meأَسْتَخْلِصْهُastakhliṣ'huI will select himلِنَفْسِى ۖlinafsīfor myselfفَلَمَّاfalammāThen whenكَلَّمَهُۥkallamahuhe spoke to himقَالَqālahe saidإِنَّكَinnakaIndeed, youٱلْيَوْمَl-yawma(are) todayلَدَيْنَاladaynāwith usمَكِينٌmakīnunfirmly establishedأَمِينٌۭamīnun(and) trusted
And the king said, "Bring him to me; I will appoint him exclusively for myself." And when he spoke to him, he said, "Indeed, you are today established [in position] and trusted

55
قَالَ ٱجْعَلْنِى عَلَىٰ خَزَآئِنِ ٱلْأَرْضِ ۖ إِنِّى حَفِيظٌ عَلِيمٌۭ
قَالَqālaHe saidٱجْعَلْنِىij'ʿalnīAppoint meعَلَىٰʿalāoverخَزَآئِنِkhazāini(the) treasuriesٱلْأَرْضِ ۖl-arḍi(of) the landإِنِّىinnīIndeed, Iحَفِيظٌḥafīẓun(will be) a guardianعَلِيمٌۭʿalīmunknowing
[Joseph] said, "Appoint me over the storehouses of the land. Indeed, I will be a knowing guardian

56
وَكَذَٰلِكَ مَكَّنَّا لِيُوسُفَ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ يَتَبَوَّأُ مِنْهَا حَيْثُ يَشَآءُ ۚ نُصِيبُ بِرَحْمَتِنَا مَن نَّشَآءُ ۖ وَلَا نُضِيعُ أَجْرَ ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ
وَكَذَٰلِكَwakadhālikaAnd thusمَكَّنَّاmakkannāWe establishedلِيُوسُفَliyūsufa[to] Yusufفِىinٱلْأَرْضِl-arḍithe landيَتَبَوَّأُyatabawwa-uto settleمِنْهَاmin'hāthereinحَيْثُḥaythuwhere everيَشَآءُ ۚyashāuhe willedنُصِيبُnuṣībuWe bestowبِرَحْمَتِنَاbiraḥmatināOur Mercyمَنman(on) whomنَّشَآءُ ۖnashāuWe willوَلَاwalāAnd notنُضِيعُnuḍīʿuWe let go wasteأَجْرَajra(the) rewardٱلْمُحْسِنِينَl-muḥ'sinīna(of) the good-doers
And thus We established Joseph in the land to settle therein wherever he willed. We touch with Our mercy whom We will, and We do not allow to be lost the reward of those who do good
⤳ Link 12:56
57
وَلَأَجْرُ ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ خَيْرٌۭ لِّلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَكَانُوا۟ يَتَّقُونَ
وَلَأَجْرُwala-ajruAnd surely (the) rewardٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِl-ākhirati(of) the Hereafterخَيْرٌۭkhayrun(is) betterلِّلَّذِينَlilladhīnafor those whoءَامَنُوا۟āmanūbelieveوَكَانُوا۟wakānūand areيَتَّقُونَyattaqūnaGod conscious
And the reward of the Hereafter is better for those who believed and were fearing Allah

58
وَجَآءَ إِخْوَةُ يُوسُفَ فَدَخَلُوا۟ عَلَيْهِ فَعَرَفَهُمْ وَهُمْ لَهُۥ مُنكِرُونَ
وَجَآءَwajāaAnd cameإِخْوَةُikh'watu(the) brothersيُوسُفَyūsufa(of) Yusufفَدَخَلُوا۟fadakhalūand they enteredعَلَيْهِʿalayhiupon himفَعَرَفَهُمْfaʿarafahumand he recognized themوَهُمْwahumbut theyلَهُۥlahuknew him notمُنكِرُونَmunkirūnaknew him not
And the brothers of Joseph came [seeking food], and they entered upon him; and he recognized them, but he was to them unknown

59
وَلَمَّا جَهَّزَهُم بِجَهَازِهِمْ قَالَ ٱئْتُونِى بِأَخٍۢ لَّكُم مِّنْ أَبِيكُمْ ۚ أَلَا تَرَوْنَ أَنِّىٓ أُوفِى ٱلْكَيْلَ وَأَنَا۠ خَيْرُ ٱلْمُنزِلِينَ
وَلَمَّاwalammāAnd whenجَهَّزَهُمjahhazahumhe had furnished themبِجَهَازِهِمْbijahāzihimwith their suppliesقَالَqālahe saidٱئْتُونِىi'tūnīBring to meبِأَخٍۢbi-akhina brotherلَّكُمlakumof yoursمِّنْminfromأَبِيكُمْ ۚabīkumyour fatherأَلَاalāDo notتَرَوْنَtarawnayou seeأَنِّىٓannīthat Iأُوفِىūfī[I] give fullٱلْكَيْلَl-kayla[the] measureوَأَنَا۠wa-anāand that I amخَيْرُkhayru(the) bestٱلْمُنزِلِينَl-munzilīna(of) the hosts
And when he had furnished them with their supplies, he said, "Bring me a brother of yours from your father. Do not you see that I give full measure and that I am the best of accommodators
⤳ Link 12:59
60
فَإِن لَّمْ تَأْتُونِى بِهِۦ فَلَا كَيْلَ لَكُمْ عِندِى وَلَا تَقْرَبُونِ
فَإِنfa-inBut ifلَّمْlamnotتَأْتُونِىtatūnīyou bring him to meبِهِۦbihiyou bring him to meفَلَاfalāthen (there will be) noكَيْلَkaylameasureلَكُمْlakumfor youعِندِىʿindīfrom meوَلَاwalāand notتَقْرَبُونِtaqrabūniyou will come near me
But if you do not bring him to me, no measure will there be [hereafter] for you from me, nor will you approach me

قَالُوا۟ سَنُرَٰوِدُ عَنْهُ أَبَاهُ وَإِنَّا لَفَـٰعِلُونَ
قَالُوا۟qālūThey saidسَنُرَٰوِدُsanurāwiduWe will try to get permissionعَنْهُʿanhufor himأَبَاهُabāhu(from) his fatherوَإِنَّاwa-innāand indeed weلَفَـٰعِلُونَlafāʿilūnasurely will do
They said, "We will attempt to dissuade his father from [keeping] him, and indeed, we will do [it]
⤳ Link 12:61
62
وَقَالَ لِفِتْيَـٰنِهِ ٱجْعَلُوا۟ بِضَـٰعَتَهُمْ فِى رِحَالِهِمْ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَعْرِفُونَهَآ إِذَا ٱنقَلَبُوٓا۟ إِلَىٰٓ أَهْلِهِمْ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَرْجِعُونَ
وَقَالَwaqālaAnd he saidلِفِتْيَـٰنِهِlifit'yānihito his servantsٱجْعَلُوا۟ij'ʿalūPutبِضَـٰعَتَهُمْbiḍāʿatahumtheir merchandiseفِىinرِحَالِهِمْriḥālihimtheir saddlebagsلَعَلَّهُمْlaʿallahumso that theyيَعْرِفُونَهَآyaʿrifūnahāmay recognize itإِذَاidhāwhenٱنقَلَبُوٓا۟inqalabūthey go backإِلَىٰٓilātoأَهْلِهِمْahlihimtheir peopleلَعَلَّهُمْlaʿallahumso that they mayيَرْجِعُونَyarjiʿūnareturn
And [Joseph] said to his servants, "Put their merchandise into their saddlebags so they might recognize it when they have gone back to their people that perhaps they will [again] return
⤳ Link 12:62
63
فَلَمَّا رَجَعُوٓا۟ إِلَىٰٓ أَبِيهِمْ قَالُوا۟ يَـٰٓأَبَانَا مُنِعَ مِنَّا ٱلْكَيْلُ فَأَرْسِلْ مَعَنَآ أَخَانَا نَكْتَلْ وَإِنَّا لَهُۥ لَحَـٰفِظُونَ
فَلَمَّاfalammāSo whenرَجَعُوٓا۟rajaʿūthey returnedإِلَىٰٓilātoأَبِيهِمْabīhimtheir fatherقَالُوا۟qālūthey saidيَـٰٓأَبَانَاyāabānāO our fatherمُنِعَmuniʿaHas been deniedمِنَّاminnāto usٱلْكَيْلُl-kayluthe measureفَأَرْسِلْfa-arsilso sendمَعَنَآmaʿanāwith usأَخَانَاakhānāour brotherنَكْتَلْnaktal(that) we will get measureوَإِنَّاwa-innāAnd indeed, weلَهُۥlahufor himلَحَـٰفِظُونَlaḥāfiẓūna(will) surely (be) guardians
So when they returned to their father, they said, "O our father, [further] measure has been denied to us, so send with us our brother [that] we will be given measure. And indeed, we will be his guardians
⤳ Link 12:63
64
قَالَ هَلْ ءَامَنُكُمْ عَلَيْهِ إِلَّا كَمَآ أَمِنتُكُمْ عَلَىٰٓ أَخِيهِ مِن قَبْلُ ۖ فَٱللَّهُ خَيْرٌ حَـٰفِظًۭا ۖ وَهُوَ أَرْحَمُ ٱلرَّٰحِمِينَ
قَالَqālaHe saidهَلْhalShouldءَامَنُكُمْāmanukumI entrust youعَلَيْهِʿalayhiwith himإِلَّاillāexceptكَمَآkamāasأَمِنتُكُمْamintukumI entrusted youعَلَىٰٓʿalāwithأَخِيهِakhīhihis brotherمِنminbeforeقَبْلُ ۖqablubeforeفَٱللَّهُfal-lahuBut Allahخَيْرٌkhayrun(is) the bestحَـٰفِظًۭا ۖḥāfiẓanGuardianوَهُوَwahuwaand Heأَرْحَمُarḥamu(is the) Most Mercifulٱلرَّٰحِمِينَl-rāḥimīna(of) the merciful
He said, "Should I entrust you with him except [under coercion] as I entrusted you with his brother before? But Allah is the best guardian, and He is the most merciful of the merciful
⤳ Link 12:64
65
وَلَمَّا فَتَحُوا۟ مَتَـٰعَهُمْ وَجَدُوا۟ بِضَـٰعَتَهُمْ رُدَّتْ إِلَيْهِمْ ۖ قَالُوا۟ يَـٰٓأَبَانَا مَا نَبْغِى ۖ هَـٰذِهِۦ بِضَـٰعَتُنَا رُدَّتْ إِلَيْنَا ۖ وَنَمِيرُ أَهْلَنَا وَنَحْفَظُ أَخَانَا وَنَزْدَادُ كَيْلَ بَعِيرٍۢ ۖ ذَٰلِكَ كَيْلٌۭ يَسِيرٌۭ
وَلَمَّاwalammāAnd whenفَتَحُوا۟fataḥūthey openedمَتَـٰعَهُمْmatāʿahumtheir baggageوَجَدُوا۟wajadūthey foundبِضَـٰعَتَهُمْbiḍāʿatahumtheir merchandiseرُدَّتْruddatreturnedإِلَيْهِمْ ۖilayhimto themقَالُوا۟qālūThey saidيَـٰٓأَبَانَاyāabānāO our fatherمَاWhatنَبْغِى ۖnabghī(could) we desireهَـٰذِهِۦhādhihiThisبِضَـٰعَتُنَاbiḍāʿatunā(is) our merchandiseرُدَّتْruddatreturnedإِلَيْنَا ۖilaynāto usوَنَمِيرُwanamīruAnd we will get provisionأَهْلَنَاahlanā(for) our familyوَنَحْفَظُwanaḥfaẓuand we will protectأَخَانَاakhānāour brotherوَنَزْدَادُwanazdāduand get an increaseكَيْلَkaylameasureبَعِيرٍۢ ۖbaʿīrin(of) a camel's (load)ذَٰلِكَdhālikaThatكَيْلٌۭkaylun(is) a measurementيَسِيرٌۭyasīruneasy
And when they opened their baggage, they found their merchandise returned to them. They said, "O our father, what [more] could we desire? This is our merchandise returned to us. And we will obtain supplies for our family and protect our brother and obtain an increase of a camel's load; that is an easy measurement

66
قَالَ لَنْ أُرْسِلَهُۥ مَعَكُمْ حَتَّىٰ تُؤْتُونِ مَوْثِقًۭا مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ لَتَأْتُنَّنِى بِهِۦٓ إِلَّآ أَن يُحَاطَ بِكُمْ ۖ فَلَمَّآ ءَاتَوْهُ مَوْثِقَهُمْ قَالَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ مَا نَقُولُ وَكِيلٌۭ
قَالَqālaHe saidلَنْlanNeverأُرْسِلَهُۥur'silahuwill I send himمَعَكُمْmaʿakumwith youحَتَّىٰḥattāuntilتُؤْتُونِtu'tūniyou give to meمَوْثِقًۭاmawthiqana promiseمِّنَminabyٱللَّهِl-lahiAllahلَتَأْتُنَّنِىlatatunnanīthat surely you will bring him to meبِهِۦٓbihithat surely you will bring him to meإِلَّآillāunlessأَنanthatيُحَاطَyuḥāṭayou are surroundedبِكُمْ ۖbikumyou are surroundedفَلَمَّآfalammāAnd whenءَاتَوْهُātawhuthey had given himمَوْثِقَهُمْmawthiqahumtheir promiseقَالَqālahe saidٱللَّهُl-lahuAllahعَلَىٰʿalāoverمَاwhatنَقُولُnaqūluwe sayوَكِيلٌۭwakīlun(is) a Guardian
[Jacob] said, "Never will I send him with you until you give me a promise by Allah that you will bring him [back] to me, unless you should be surrounded by enemies." And when they had given their promise, he said, "Allah, over what we say, is Witness

67
وَقَالَ يَـٰبَنِىَّ لَا تَدْخُلُوا۟ مِنۢ بَابٍۢ وَٰحِدٍۢ وَٱدْخُلُوا۟ مِنْ أَبْوَٰبٍۢ مُّتَفَرِّقَةٍۢ ۖ وَمَآ أُغْنِى عَنكُم مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ مِن شَىْءٍ ۖ إِنِ ٱلْحُكْمُ إِلَّا لِلَّهِ ۖ عَلَيْهِ تَوَكَّلْتُ ۖ وَعَلَيْهِ فَلْيَتَوَكَّلِ ٱلْمُتَوَكِّلُونَ
وَقَالَwaqālaAnd he saidيَـٰبَنِىَّyābaniyyaO my sonsلَا(Do) notتَدْخُلُوا۟tadkhulūenterمِنۢminfromبَابٍۢbābinone gateوَٰحِدٍۢwāḥidinone gateوَٱدْخُلُوا۟wa-ud'khulūbut enterمِنْminfromأَبْوَٰبٍۢabwābingatesمُّتَفَرِّقَةٍۢ ۖmutafarriqatindifferentوَمَآwamāAnd notأُغْنِىugh'nīI can availعَنكُمʿankumyouمِّنَminaagainstٱللَّهِl-lahiAllahمِنminanyشَىْءٍ ۖshayinthingإِنِiniNotٱلْحُكْمُl-ḥuk'mu(is) the decisionإِلَّاillāexceptلِلَّهِ ۖlillahiwith Allahعَلَيْهِʿalayhiupon Himتَوَكَّلْتُ ۖtawakkaltuI put my trustوَعَلَيْهِwaʿalayhiand upon Himفَلْيَتَوَكَّلِfalyatawakkalilet put (their) trustٱلْمُتَوَكِّلُونَl-mutawakilūnathe ones who put trust
And he said, "O my sons, do not enter from one gate but enter from different gates; and I cannot avail you against [the decree of] Allah at all. The decision is only for Allah; upon Him I have relied, and upon Him let those who would rely [indeed] rely
⤳ Link 12:67
68
وَلَمَّا دَخَلُوا۟ مِنْ حَيْثُ أَمَرَهُمْ أَبُوهُم مَّا كَانَ يُغْنِى عَنْهُم مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ مِن شَىْءٍ إِلَّا حَاجَةًۭ فِى نَفْسِ يَعْقُوبَ قَضَىٰهَا ۚ وَإِنَّهُۥ لَذُو عِلْمٍۢ لِّمَا عَلَّمْنَـٰهُ وَلَـٰكِنَّ أَكْثَرَ ٱلنَّاسِ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ
وَلَمَّاwalammāAnd whenدَخَلُوا۟dakhalūthey enteredمِنْminfromحَيْثُḥaythuwhereأَمَرَهُمْamarahumordered themأَبُوهُمabūhumtheir fatherمَّاnotكَانَkānaitيُغْنِىyugh'nīavail(ed)عَنْهُمʿanhumthemمِّنَminaagainstٱللَّهِl-lahiAllahمِنminanyشَىْءٍshayinthingإِلَّاillābutحَاجَةًۭḥājatan(it was) a needفِىofنَفْسِnafsiYaqub's soulيَعْقُوبَyaʿqūbaYaqub's soulقَضَىٰهَا ۚqaḍāhāwhich he carried outوَإِنَّهُۥwa-innahuAnd indeed, heلَذُوladhū(was) a possessorعِلْمٍۢʿil'min(of) knowledgeلِّمَاlimābecauseعَلَّمْنَـٰهُʿallamnāhuWe had taught himوَلَـٰكِنَّwalākinnabutأَكْثَرَaktharamostٱلنَّاسِl-nāsi(of) the peopleلَا(do) notيَعْلَمُونَyaʿlamūnaknow
And when they entered from where their father had ordered them, it did not avail them against Allah at all except [it was] a need within the soul of Jacob, which he satisfied. And indeed, he was a possessor of knowledge because of what We had taught him, but most of the people do not know
⤳ Link 12:68
69
وَلَمَّا دَخَلُوا۟ عَلَىٰ يُوسُفَ ءَاوَىٰٓ إِلَيْهِ أَخَاهُ ۖ قَالَ إِنِّىٓ أَنَا۠ أَخُوكَ فَلَا تَبْتَئِسْ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ يَعْمَلُونَ
وَلَمَّاwalammāAnd whenدَخَلُوا۟dakhalūthey enteredعَلَىٰʿalāuponيُوسُفَyūsufaYusufءَاوَىٰٓāwāhe tookإِلَيْهِilayhito himselfأَخَاهُ ۖakhāhuhis brotherقَالَqālaHe saidإِنِّىٓinnīIndeed, Iأَنَا۠anā[I] amأَخُوكَakhūkayour brotherفَلَاfalāso (do) notتَبْتَئِسْtabta-isgrieveبِمَاbimāfor whatكَانُوا۟kānūthey used (to)يَعْمَلُونَyaʿmalūnado
And when they entered upon Joseph, he took his brother to himself; he said, "Indeed, I am your brother, so do not despair over what they used to do [to me]
⤳ Link 12:69
70
فَلَمَّا جَهَّزَهُم بِجَهَازِهِمْ جَعَلَ ٱلسِّقَايَةَ فِى رَحْلِ أَخِيهِ ثُمَّ أَذَّنَ مُؤَذِّنٌ أَيَّتُهَا ٱلْعِيرُ إِنَّكُمْ لَسَـٰرِقُونَ
فَلَمَّاfalammāSo whenجَهَّزَهُمjahhazahumhe had furnished themبِجَهَازِهِمْbijahāzihimwith their suppliesجَعَلَjaʿalahe putٱلسِّقَايَةَl-siqāyatathe drinking cupفِىinرَحْلِraḥlithe bagأَخِيهِakhīhi(of) his brotherثُمَّthummaThenأَذَّنَadhanacalled outمُؤَذِّنٌmu-adhinunan announcerأَيَّتُهَاayyatuhāO youٱلْعِيرُl-ʿīru(in) the caravanإِنَّكُمْinnakumIndeed, youلَسَـٰرِقُونَlasāriqūnasurely (are) thieves
So when he had furnished them with their supplies, he put the [gold measuring] bowl into the bag of his brother. Then an announcer called out, "O caravan, indeed you are thieves
⤳ Link 12:70
71
قَالُوا۟ وَأَقْبَلُوا۟ عَلَيْهِم مَّاذَا تَفْقِدُونَ
قَالُوا۟qālūThey saidوَأَقْبَلُوا۟wa-aqbalūturning towardsعَلَيْهِمʿalayhimthemمَّاذَاmādhāWhat (is it)تَفْقِدُونَtafqidūnayou miss
They said while approaching them, "What is it you are missing
⤳ Link 12:71
72
قَالُوا۟ نَفْقِدُ صُوَاعَ ٱلْمَلِكِ وَلِمَن جَآءَ بِهِۦ حِمْلُ بَعِيرٍۢ وَأَنَا۠ بِهِۦ زَعِيمٌۭ
قَالُوا۟qālūThey saidنَفْقِدُnafqiduWe are missingصُوَاعَṣuwāʿa(the) cupٱلْمَلِكِl-maliki(of) the kingوَلِمَنwalimanAnd for (one) whoجَآءَjāabringsبِهِۦbihiitحِمْلُḥim'lu(is) a loadبَعِيرٍۢbaʿīrin(of) a camelوَأَنَا۠wa-anāand Iبِهِۦbihifor itزَعِيمٌۭzaʿīmun(is) responsible
They said, "We are missing the measure of the king. And for he who produces it is [the reward of] a camel's load, and I am responsible for it
⤳ Link 12:72
73
قَالُوا۟ تَٱللَّهِ لَقَدْ عَلِمْتُم مَّا جِئْنَا لِنُفْسِدَ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ وَمَا كُنَّا سَـٰرِقِينَ
قَالُوا۟qālūThey saidتَٱللَّهِtal-lahiBy Allahلَقَدْlaqadcertainlyعَلِمْتُمʿalim'tumyou knowمَّاnotجِئْنَاji'nāwe cameلِنُفْسِدَlinuf'sidathat we cause corruptionفِىinٱلْأَرْضِl-arḍithe landوَمَاwamāand notكُنَّاkunnāwe areسَـٰرِقِينَsāriqīnathieves
They said, "By Allah, you have certainly known that we did not come to cause corruption in the land, and we have not been thieves
⤳ Link 12:73
74
قَالُوا۟ فَمَا جَزَٰٓؤُهُۥٓ إِن كُنتُمْ كَـٰذِبِينَ
قَالُوا۟qālūThey saidفَمَاfamāThen whatجَزَٰٓؤُهُۥٓjazāuhu(will be the) recompense (of) itإِنinifكُنتُمْkuntumyou areكَـٰذِبِينَkādhibīnaliars
The accusers said, "Then what would be its recompense if you should be liars
⤳ Link 12:74
75
قَالُوا۟ جَزَٰٓؤُهُۥ مَن وُجِدَ فِى رَحْلِهِۦ فَهُوَ جَزَٰٓؤُهُۥ ۚ كَذَٰلِكَ نَجْزِى ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ
قَالُوا۟qālūThey saidجَزَٰٓؤُهُۥjazāuhuIts recompenseمَنman(is that one) whoوُجِدَwujidait is foundفِىinرَحْلِهِۦraḥlihihis bagفَهُوَfahuwathen heجَزَٰٓؤُهُۥ ۚjazāuhu(will be) his recompenseكَذَٰلِكَkadhālikaThusنَجْزِىnajzī(do) we recompenseٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَl-ẓālimīnathe wrongdoers
[The brothers] said, "Its recompense is that he in whose bag it is found - he [himself] will be its recompense. Thus do we recompense the wrongdoers
⤳ Link 12:75
76
فَبَدَأَ بِأَوْعِيَتِهِمْ قَبْلَ وِعَآءِ أَخِيهِ ثُمَّ ٱسْتَخْرَجَهَا مِن وِعَآءِ أَخِيهِ ۚ كَذَٰلِكَ كِدْنَا لِيُوسُفَ ۖ مَا كَانَ لِيَأْخُذَ أَخَاهُ فِى دِينِ ٱلْمَلِكِ إِلَّآ أَن يَشَآءَ ٱللَّهُ ۚ نَرْفَعُ دَرَجَـٰتٍۢ مَّن نَّشَآءُ ۗ وَفَوْقَ كُلِّ ذِى عِلْمٍ عَلِيمٌۭ
فَبَدَأَfabada-aSo he beganبِأَوْعِيَتِهِمْbi-awʿiyatihimwith their bagsقَبْلَqablabeforeوِعَآءِwiʿāi(the) bagأَخِيهِakhīhi(of) his brotherثُمَّthummathenٱسْتَخْرَجَهَاis'takhrajahāhe brought it outمِنminfromوِعَآءِwiʿāi(the) bagأَخِيهِ ۚakhīhi(of) his brotherكَذَٰلِكَkadhālikaThusكِدْنَاkid'nā(did) We planلِيُوسُفَ ۖliyūsufafor YusufمَاHe could notكَانَkānaHe could notلِيَأْخُذَliyakhudhatakeأَخَاهُakhāhuhis brotherفِىbyدِينِdīnithe lawٱلْمَلِكِl-maliki(of) the kingإِلَّآillāexceptأَنanthatيَشَآءَyashāaAllah willedٱللَّهُ ۚl-lahuAllah willedنَرْفَعُnarfaʿuWe raiseدَرَجَـٰتٍۢdarajātin(in) degreesمَّنmanwhomنَّشَآءُ ۗnashāuWe willوَفَوْقَwafawqabut overكُلِّkullieveryذِىdhīpossessorعِلْمٍʿil'min(of) knowledgeعَلِيمٌۭʿalīmun(is) the All-Knower
So he began [the search] with their bags before the bag of his brother; then he extracted it from the bag of his brother. Thus did We plan for Joseph. He could not have taken his brother within the religion of the king except that Allah willed. We raise in degrees whom We will, but over every possessor of knowledge is one [more] knowing
⤳ Link 12:76
77
۞ قَالُوٓا۟ إِن يَسْرِقْ فَقَدْ سَرَقَ أَخٌۭ لَّهُۥ مِن قَبْلُ ۚ فَأَسَرَّهَا يُوسُفُ فِى نَفْسِهِۦ وَلَمْ يُبْدِهَا لَهُمْ ۚ قَالَ أَنتُمْ شَرٌّۭ مَّكَانًۭا ۖ وَٱللَّهُ أَعْلَمُ بِمَا تَصِفُونَ
۞ قَالُوٓا۟qālūThey saidإِنinIfيَسْرِقْyasriqhe steals فَقَدْfaqadthen verilyسَرَقَsaraqastoleأَخٌۭakhuna brotherلَّهُۥlahuof hisمِنminbeforeقَبْلُ ۚqablubeforeفَأَسَرَّهَاfa-asarrahāBut Yusuf kept it secretيُوسُفُyūsufuBut Yusuf kept it secretفِىwithinنَفْسِهِۦnafsihihimselfوَلَمْwalamand (did) notيُبْدِهَاyub'dihāreveal itلَهُمْ ۚlahumto themقَالَqālaHe saidأَنتُمْantumYouشَرٌّۭsharrun(are the) worseمَّكَانًۭا ۖmakānan(in) positionوَٱللَّهُwal-lahuand Allahأَعْلَمُaʿlamuknows bestبِمَاbimāof whatتَصِفُونَtaṣifūnayou describe
They said, "If he steals - a brother of his has stolen before." But Joseph kept it within himself and did not reveal it to them. He said, "You are worse in position, and Allah is most knowing of what you describe
⤳ Link 12:77
78
قَالُوا۟ يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلْعَزِيزُ إِنَّ لَهُۥٓ أَبًۭا شَيْخًۭا كَبِيرًۭا فَخُذْ أَحَدَنَا مَكَانَهُۥٓ ۖ إِنَّا نَرَىٰكَ مِنَ ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ
قَالُوا۟qālūThey saidيَـٰٓأَيُّهَاyāayyuhāOٱلْعَزِيزُl-ʿazīzuAzizإِنَّinnaIndeedلَهُۥٓlahuhe hasأَبًۭاabana fatherشَيْخًۭاshaykhanoldكَبِيرًۭاkabīran[great]فَخُذْfakhudhso takeأَحَدَنَاaḥadanāone of usمَكَانَهُۥٓ ۖmakānahu(in) his placeإِنَّاinnāIndeed, weنَرَىٰكَnarāka[we] see youمِنَminaofٱلْمُحْسِنِينَl-muḥ'sinīnathe good-doers
They said, "O 'Azeez, indeed he has a father [who is] an old man, so take one of us in place of him. Indeed, we see you as a doer of good
⤳ Link 12:78
79
قَالَ مَعَاذَ ٱللَّهِ أَن نَّأْخُذَ إِلَّا مَن وَجَدْنَا مَتَـٰعَنَا عِندَهُۥٓ إِنَّآ إِذًۭا لَّظَـٰلِمُونَ
قَالَqālaHe saidمَعَاذَmaʿādhaAllah forbidٱللَّهِl-lahiAllah forbidأَنanthatنَّأْخُذَnakhudhawe takeإِلَّاillāexceptمَنman(one) whoوَجَدْنَاwajadnāwe foundمَتَـٰعَنَاmatāʿanāour possessionعِندَهُۥٓʿindahuwith himإِنَّآinnāIndeed, weإِذًۭاidhanthenلَّظَـٰلِمُونَlaẓālimūnasurely (would be) wrongdoers
He said, "[I seek] the refuge of Allah [to prevent] that we take except him with whom we found our possession. Indeed, we would then be unjust
⤳ Link 12:79
80
فَلَمَّا ٱسْتَيْـَٔسُوا۟ مِنْهُ خَلَصُوا۟ نَجِيًّۭا ۖ قَالَ كَبِيرُهُمْ أَلَمْ تَعْلَمُوٓا۟ أَنَّ أَبَاكُمْ قَدْ أَخَذَ عَلَيْكُم مَّوْثِقًۭا مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ وَمِن قَبْلُ مَا فَرَّطتُمْ فِى يُوسُفَ ۖ فَلَنْ أَبْرَحَ ٱلْأَرْضَ حَتَّىٰ يَأْذَنَ لِىٓ أَبِىٓ أَوْ يَحْكُمَ ٱللَّهُ لِى ۖ وَهُوَ خَيْرُ ٱلْحَـٰكِمِينَ
فَلَمَّاfalammāSo whenٱسْتَيْـَٔسُوا۟is'tayasūthey despairedمِنْهُmin'huof himخَلَصُوا۟khalaṣūthey secluded themselvesنَجِيًّۭا ۖnajiyyan(in) private consultationقَالَqālaSaidكَبِيرُهُمْkabīruhumthe eldest among themأَلَمْalamDo notتَعْلَمُوٓا۟taʿlamūyou knowأَنَّannathatأَبَاكُمْabākumyour fatherقَدْqadhas takenأَخَذَakhadhahas takenعَلَيْكُمʿalaykumupon youمَّوْثِقًۭاmawthiqana promiseمِّنَminabyٱللَّهِl-lahiAllahوَمِنwaminand beforeقَبْلُqabluand beforeمَاthatفَرَّطتُمْfarraṭtumyou failedفِىconcerningيُوسُفَ ۖyūsufaYusufفَلَنْfalanSo neverأَبْرَحَabraḥawill I leaveٱلْأَرْضَl-arḍathe landحَتَّىٰḥattāuntilيَأْذَنَyadhanapermitsلِىٓmeأَبِىٓabīmy fatherأَوْaworيَحْكُمَyaḥkumaAllah decidesٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah decidesلِى ۖfor meوَهُوَwahuwaand Heخَيْرُkhayru(is) the Bestٱلْحَـٰكِمِينَl-ḥākimīna(of) the judges
So when they had despaired of him, they secluded themselves in private consultation. The eldest of them said, "Do you not know that your father has taken upon you an oath by Allah and [that] before you failed in [your duty to] Joseph? So I will never leave [this] land until my father permits me or Allah decides for me, and He is the best of judges

81
ٱرْجِعُوٓا۟ إِلَىٰٓ أَبِيكُمْ فَقُولُوا۟ يَـٰٓأَبَانَآ إِنَّ ٱبْنَكَ سَرَقَ وَمَا شَهِدْنَآ إِلَّا بِمَا عَلِمْنَا وَمَا كُنَّا لِلْغَيْبِ حَـٰفِظِينَ
ٱرْجِعُوٓا۟ir'jiʿūReturnإِلَىٰٓilātoأَبِيكُمْabīkumyour fatherفَقُولُوا۟faqūlūand sayيَـٰٓأَبَانَآyāabānā'O our fatherإِنَّinnaIndeedٱبْنَكَib'nakayour sonسَرَقَsaraqahas stolenوَمَاwamāand notشَهِدْنَآshahid'nāwe testifyإِلَّاillāexceptبِمَاbimāof whatعَلِمْنَاʿalim'nāwe knewوَمَاwamāAnd notكُنَّاkunnāwe wereلِلْغَيْبِlil'ghaybiof the unseenحَـٰفِظِينَḥāfiẓīnaguardians
Return to your father and say, "O our father, indeed your son has stolen, and we did not testify except to what we knew. And we were not witnesses of the unseen
⤳ Link 12:81
82
وَسْـَٔلِ ٱلْقَرْيَةَ ٱلَّتِى كُنَّا فِيهَا وَٱلْعِيرَ ٱلَّتِىٓ أَقْبَلْنَا فِيهَا ۖ وَإِنَّا لَصَـٰدِقُونَ
وَسْـَٔلِwasaliAnd askٱلْقَرْيَةَl-qaryatathe townٱلَّتِىallatīwhereكُنَّاkunnāwe wereفِيهَاfīhā[in it]وَٱلْعِيرَwal-ʿīraand the caravanٱلَّتِىٓallatīwhichأَقْبَلْنَاaqbalnāwe returnedفِيهَا ۖfīhā[in it]وَإِنَّاwa-innāAnd indeed, weلَصَـٰدِقُونَlaṣādiqūnasurely (are) truthful.'
And ask the city in which we were and the caravan in which we came - and indeed, we are truthful

83
قَالَ بَلْ سَوَّلَتْ لَكُمْ أَنفُسُكُمْ أَمْرًۭا ۖ فَصَبْرٌۭ جَمِيلٌ ۖ عَسَى ٱللَّهُ أَن يَأْتِيَنِى بِهِمْ جَمِيعًا ۚ إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ ٱلْعَلِيمُ ٱلْحَكِيمُ
قَالَqālaHe saidبَلْbalNayسَوَّلَتْsawwalathave enticedلَكُمْlakumyouأَنفُسُكُمْanfusukumyour soulsأَمْرًۭا ۖamransomethingفَصَبْرٌۭfaṣabrunso patienceجَمِيلٌ ۖjamīlun(is) beautifulعَسَىʿasāPerhapsٱللَّهُl-lahuAllahأَنanwill bring them to meيَأْتِيَنِىyatiyanīwill bring them to meبِهِمْbihimwill bring them to meجَمِيعًا ۚjamīʿanallإِنَّهُۥinnahuIndeed, HeهُوَhuwaHeٱلْعَلِيمُl-ʿalīmu(is) the All-Knowerٱلْحَكِيمُl-ḥakīmuAll-Wise
[Jacob] said, "Rather, your souls have enticed you to something, so patience is most fitting. Perhaps Allah will bring them to me all together. Indeed it is He who is the Knowing, the Wise
⤳ Link 12:83
84
وَتَوَلَّىٰ عَنْهُمْ وَقَالَ يَـٰٓأَسَفَىٰ عَلَىٰ يُوسُفَ وَٱبْيَضَّتْ عَيْنَاهُ مِنَ ٱلْحُزْنِ فَهُوَ كَظِيمٌۭ
وَتَوَلَّىٰwatawallāAnd he turned awayعَنْهُمْʿanhumfrom themوَقَالَwaqālaand saidيَـٰٓأَسَفَىٰyāasafāAlas, my griefعَلَىٰʿalāoverيُوسُفَyūsufaYusufوَٱبْيَضَّتْwa-ib'yaḍḍatAnd became whiteعَيْنَاهُʿaynāhuhis eyesمِنَminafromٱلْحُزْنِl-ḥuz'nithe griefفَهُوَfahuwaand he (was)كَظِيمٌۭkaẓīmuna suppressor
And he turned away from them and said, "Oh, my sorrow over Joseph," and his eyes became white from grief, for he was [of that] a suppressor

85
قَالُوا۟ تَٱللَّهِ تَفْتَؤُا۟ تَذْكُرُ يُوسُفَ حَتَّىٰ تَكُونَ حَرَضًا أَوْ تَكُونَ مِنَ ٱلْهَـٰلِكِينَ
قَالُوا۟qālūThey saidتَٱللَّهِtal-lahiBy Allahتَفْتَؤُا۟tafta-uyou will not ceaseتَذْكُرُtadhkururememberingيُوسُفَyūsufaYusufحَتَّىٰḥattāuntilتَكُونَtakūnayou becomeحَرَضًاḥaraḍanfatally illأَوْaworتَكُونَtakūnabecomeمِنَminaofٱلْهَـٰلِكِينَl-hālikīnathose who perish
They said, "By Allah, you will not cease remembering Joseph until you become fatally ill or become of those who perish

86
قَالَ إِنَّمَآ أَشْكُوا۟ بَثِّى وَحُزْنِىٓ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ وَأَعْلَمُ مِنَ ٱللَّهِ مَا لَا تَعْلَمُونَ
قَالَqālaHe saidإِنَّمَآinnamāOnlyأَشْكُوا۟ashkūI complainبَثِّىbathī(of) my sufferingوَحُزْنِىٓwaḥuz'nīand my griefإِلَىilātoٱللَّهِl-lahiAllahوَأَعْلَمُwa-aʿlamuand I knowمِنَminafromٱللَّهِl-lahiAllahمَاwhatلَاnotتَعْلَمُونَtaʿlamūnayou know
He said, "I only complain of my suffering and my grief to Allah, and I know from Allah that which you do not know
⤳ Link 12:86
87
يَـٰبَنِىَّ ٱذْهَبُوا۟ فَتَحَسَّسُوا۟ مِن يُوسُفَ وَأَخِيهِ وَلَا تَا۟يْـَٔسُوا۟ مِن رَّوْحِ ٱللَّهِ ۖ إِنَّهُۥ لَا يَا۟يْـَٔسُ مِن رَّوْحِ ٱللَّهِ إِلَّا ٱلْقَوْمُ ٱلْكَـٰفِرُونَ
يَـٰبَنِىَّyābaniyyaO my sonsٱذْهَبُوا۟idh'habūGoفَتَحَسَّسُوا۟fataḥassasūand inquireمِنminaboutيُوسُفَyūsufaYusufوَأَخِيهِwa-akhīhiand his brotherوَلَاwalāand notتَا۟يْـَٔسُوا۟tāy'asūdespairمِنminofرَّوْحِrawḥi(the) Mercy of Allahٱللَّهِ ۖl-lahi(the) Mercy of AllahإِنَّهُۥinnahuIndeedلَاnoneيَا۟يْـَٔسُyāy'asudespairsمِنminofرَّوْحِrawḥi(the) Mercy of Allahٱللَّهِl-lahi(the) Mercy of Allahإِلَّاillāexceptٱلْقَوْمُl-qawmuthe peopleٱلْكَـٰفِرُونَl-kāfirūnathe disbelievers
O my sons, go and find out about Joseph and his brother and despair not of relief from Allah. Indeed, no one despairs of relief from Allah except the disbelieving people
⤳ Link 12:87
88
فَلَمَّا دَخَلُوا۟ عَلَيْهِ قَالُوا۟ يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلْعَزِيزُ مَسَّنَا وَأَهْلَنَا ٱلضُّرُّ وَجِئْنَا بِبِضَـٰعَةٍۢ مُّزْجَىٰةٍۢ فَأَوْفِ لَنَا ٱلْكَيْلَ وَتَصَدَّقْ عَلَيْنَآ ۖ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يَجْزِى ٱلْمُتَصَدِّقِينَ
فَلَمَّاfalammāSo whenدَخَلُوا۟dakhalūthey enteredعَلَيْهِʿalayhiupon himقَالُوا۟qālūthey saidيَـٰٓأَيُّهَاyāayyuhāO Azizٱلْعَزِيزُl-ʿazīzuO AzizمَسَّنَاmassanāHas touched usوَأَهْلَنَاwa-ahlanāand our familyٱلضُّرُّl-ḍuruthe adversityوَجِئْنَاwaji'nāand we have comeبِبِضَـٰعَةٍۢbibiḍāʿatinwith goodsمُّزْجَىٰةٍۢmuz'jātin(of) little valueفَأَوْفِfa-awfibut pay (in) fullلَنَاlanāto usٱلْكَيْلَl-kaylathe measureوَتَصَدَّقْwataṣaddaqand be charitableعَلَيْنَآ ۖʿalaynāto usإِنَّinnaIndeedٱللَّهَl-lahaAllahيَجْزِىyajzīrewardsٱلْمُتَصَدِّقِينَl-mutaṣadiqīnathe charitable
So when they entered upon Joseph, they said, "O 'Azeez, adversity has touched us and our family, and we have come with goods poor in quality, but give us full measure and be charitable to us. Indeed, Allah rewards the charitable

89
قَالَ هَلْ عَلِمْتُم مَّا فَعَلْتُم بِيُوسُفَ وَأَخِيهِ إِذْ أَنتُمْ جَـٰهِلُونَ
قَالَqālaHe saidهَلْhalDoعَلِمْتُمʿalim'tumyou knowمَّاwhatفَعَلْتُمfaʿaltumyou didبِيُوسُفَbiyūsufawith Yusufوَأَخِيهِwa-akhīhiand his brotherإِذْidhwhenأَنتُمْantumyou wereجَـٰهِلُونَjāhilūnaignorant
He said, "Do you know what you did with Joseph and his brother when you were ignorant

90
قَالُوٓا۟ أَءِنَّكَ لَأَنتَ يُوسُفُ ۖ قَالَ أَنَا۠ يُوسُفُ وَهَـٰذَآ أَخِى ۖ قَدْ مَنَّ ٱللَّهُ عَلَيْنَآ ۖ إِنَّهُۥ مَن يَتَّقِ وَيَصْبِرْ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا يُضِيعُ أَجْرَ ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ
قَالُوٓا۟qālūThey saidأَءِنَّكَa-innakaAre you indeedلَأَنتَla-antasurely youيُوسُفُ ۖyūsufuYusufقَالَqālaHe saidأَنَا۠anāI amيُوسُفُyūsufuYusufوَهَـٰذَآwahādhāand thisأَخِى ۖakhī(is) my brotherقَدْqadIndeedمَنَّmannaAllah has been graciousٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah has been graciousعَلَيْنَآ ۖʿalaynāto usإِنَّهُۥinnahuIndeed, heمَنmanwhoيَتَّقِyattaqifears Allahوَيَصْبِرْwayaṣbirand (is) patientفَإِنَّfa-innathen indeedٱللَّهَl-lahaAllahلَا(does) notيُضِيعُyuḍīʿulet go wasteأَجْرَajra(the) rewardٱلْمُحْسِنِينَl-muḥ'sinīna(of) the good-doers
They said, "Are you indeed Joseph?" He said "I am Joseph, and this is my brother. Allah has certainly favored us. Indeed, he who fears Allah and is patient, then indeed, Allah does not allow to be lost the reward of those who do good

91
قَالُوا۟ تَٱللَّهِ لَقَدْ ءَاثَرَكَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَيْنَا وَإِن كُنَّا لَخَـٰطِـِٔينَ
قَالُوا۟qālūThey saidتَٱللَّهِtal-lahiBy AllahلَقَدْlaqadcertainlyءَاثَرَكَātharakaAllah has preferred youٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah has preferred youعَلَيْنَاʿalaynāover usوَإِنwa-inand indeedكُنَّاkunnāwe have beenلَخَـٰطِـِٔينَlakhāṭiīnasinners
They said, "By Allah, certainly has Allah preferred you over us, and indeed, we have been sinners
⤳ Link 12:91
92
قَالَ لَا تَثْرِيبَ عَلَيْكُمُ ٱلْيَوْمَ ۖ يَغْفِرُ ٱللَّهُ لَكُمْ ۖ وَهُوَ أَرْحَمُ ٱلرَّٰحِمِينَ
قَالَqālaHe saidلَاNoتَثْرِيبَtathrībablameعَلَيْكُمُʿalaykumuupon youٱلْيَوْمَ ۖl-yawmatodayيَغْفِرُyaghfiruAllah will forgiveٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah will forgiveلَكُمْ ۖlakumyouوَهُوَwahuwaand Heأَرْحَمُarḥamu(is) the Most Mercifulٱلرَّٰحِمِينَl-rāḥimīna(of) those who show mercy
He said, "No blame will there be upon you today. Allah will forgive you; and He is the most merciful of the merciful
⤳ Link 12:92
93
ٱذْهَبُوا۟ بِقَمِيصِى هَـٰذَا فَأَلْقُوهُ عَلَىٰ وَجْهِ أَبِى يَأْتِ بَصِيرًۭا وَأْتُونِى بِأَهْلِكُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ
ٱذْهَبُوا۟idh'habūGoبِقَمِيصِىbiqamīṣīwith this shirt of mineهَـٰذَاhādhāwith this shirt of mineفَأَلْقُوهُfa-alqūhuand cast itعَلَىٰʿalāoverوَجْهِwajhi(the) faceأَبِىabī(of) my fatherيَأْتِyatihe will regain sightبَصِيرًۭاbaṣīranhe will regain sightوَأْتُونِىwatūnīAnd bring to meبِأَهْلِكُمْbi-ahlikumyour familyأَجْمَعِينَajmaʿīnaall together
Take this, my shirt, and cast it over the face of my father; he will become seeing. And bring me your family, all together
⤳ Link 12:93
94
وَلَمَّا فَصَلَتِ ٱلْعِيرُ قَالَ أَبُوهُمْ إِنِّى لَأَجِدُ رِيحَ يُوسُفَ ۖ لَوْلَآ أَن تُفَنِّدُونِ
وَلَمَّاwalammāAnd whenفَصَلَتِfaṣalatidepartedٱلْعِيرُl-ʿīruthe caravanقَالَqālatheir father saidأَبُوهُمْabūhumtheir father saidإِنِّىinnīIndeed, Iلَأَجِدُla-ajidu[I] findرِيحَrīḥa(the) smellيُوسُفَ ۖyūsufa(of) Yusufلَوْلَآlawlāif notأَنanthatتُفَنِّدُونِtufannidūniyou think me weakened in mind
And when the caravan departed [from Egypt], their father said, "Indeed, I find the smell of Joseph [and would say that he was alive] if you did not think me weakened in mind
⤳ Link 12:94
95
قَالُوا۟ تَٱللَّهِ إِنَّكَ لَفِى ضَلَـٰلِكَ ٱلْقَدِيمِ
قَالُوا۟qālūThey saidتَٱللَّهِtal-lahiBy Allahإِنَّكَinnakaindeed, youلَفِىlafīsurely (are) inضَلَـٰلِكَḍalālikayour errorٱلْقَدِيمِl-qadīmiold
They said, "By Allah, indeed you are in your [same] old error
⤳ Link 12:95
96
فَلَمَّآ أَن جَآءَ ٱلْبَشِيرُ أَلْقَىٰهُ عَلَىٰ وَجْهِهِۦ فَٱرْتَدَّ بَصِيرًۭا ۖ قَالَ أَلَمْ أَقُل لَّكُمْ إِنِّىٓ أَعْلَمُ مِنَ ٱللَّهِ مَا لَا تَعْلَمُونَ
فَلَمَّآfalammāThen whenأَنan[that]جَآءَjāaarrivedٱلْبَشِيرُl-bashīruthe bearer of glad tidingsأَلْقَىٰهُalqāhuhe cast itعَلَىٰʿalāoverوَجْهِهِۦwajhihihis faceفَٱرْتَدَّfa-ir'taddathen returned (his) sightبَصِيرًۭا ۖbaṣīranthen returned (his) sightقَالَqālaHe saidأَلَمْalamDid notأَقُلaqulI sayلَّكُمْlakumto youإِنِّىٓinnīindeed, Iأَعْلَمُaʿlamu[I] knowمِنَminafromٱللَّهِl-lahiAllahمَاwhatلَاnotتَعْلَمُونَtaʿlamūnayou know
And when the bearer of good tidings arrived, he cast it over his face, and he returned [once again] seeing. He said, "Did I not tell you that I know from Allah that which you do not know
⤳ Link 12:96
97
قَالُوا۟ يَـٰٓأَبَانَا ٱسْتَغْفِرْ لَنَا ذُنُوبَنَآ إِنَّا كُنَّا خَـٰطِـِٔينَ
قَالُوا۟qālūThey saidيَـٰٓأَبَانَاyāabānāO our fatherٱسْتَغْفِرْis'taghfirAsk forgivenessلَنَاlanāfor usذُنُوبَنَآdhunūbanā(of) our sinsإِنَّاinnāIndeed, weكُنَّاkunnāhave beenخَـٰطِـِٔينَkhāṭiīnasinners
They said, "O our father, ask for us forgiveness of our sins; indeed, we have been sinners
⤳ Link 12:97
98
قَالَ سَوْفَ أَسْتَغْفِرُ لَكُمْ رَبِّىٓ ۖ إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ ٱلْغَفُورُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ
قَالَqālaHe saidسَوْفَsawfaSoonأَسْتَغْفِرُastaghfiruI will ask forgivenessلَكُمْlakumfor youرَبِّىٓ ۖrabbī(from) my LordإِنَّهُۥinnahuIndeed, HeهُوَhuwaHeٱلْغَفُورُl-ghafūru(is) the Oft-Forgivingٱلرَّحِيمُl-raḥīmuthe Most Merciful
He said, "I will ask forgiveness for you from my Lord. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful

99
فَلَمَّا دَخَلُوا۟ عَلَىٰ يُوسُفَ ءَاوَىٰٓ إِلَيْهِ أَبَوَيْهِ وَقَالَ ٱدْخُلُوا۟ مِصْرَ إِن شَآءَ ٱللَّهُ ءَامِنِينَ
فَلَمَّاfalammāThen whenدَخَلُوا۟dakhalūthey enteredعَلَىٰʿalāuponيُوسُفَyūsufaYusufءَاوَىٰٓāwāhe tookإِلَيْهِilayhito himselfأَبَوَيْهِabawayhihis parentsوَقَالَwaqālaand saidٱدْخُلُوا۟ud'khulūEnterمِصْرَmiṣ'raEgyptإِنinifشَآءَshāaAllah willsٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah willsءَامِنِينَāminīnasafe
And when they entered upon Joseph, he took his parents to himself and said, "Enter Egypt, Allah willing, safe [and secure]
⤳ Link 12:99
100
وَرَفَعَ أَبَوَيْهِ عَلَى ٱلْعَرْشِ وَخَرُّوا۟ لَهُۥ سُجَّدًۭا ۖ وَقَالَ يَـٰٓأَبَتِ هَـٰذَا تَأْوِيلُ رُءْيَـٰىَ مِن قَبْلُ قَدْ جَعَلَهَا رَبِّى حَقًّۭا ۖ وَقَدْ أَحْسَنَ بِىٓ إِذْ أَخْرَجَنِى مِنَ ٱلسِّجْنِ وَجَآءَ بِكُم مِّنَ ٱلْبَدْوِ مِنۢ بَعْدِ أَن نَّزَغَ ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنُ بَيْنِى وَبَيْنَ إِخْوَتِىٓ ۚ إِنَّ رَبِّى لَطِيفٌۭ لِّمَا يَشَآءُ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ ٱلْعَلِيمُ ٱلْحَكِيمُ
وَرَفَعَwarafaʿaAnd he raisedأَبَوَيْهِabawayhihis parentsعَلَىʿalāuponٱلْعَرْشِl-ʿarshithe throneوَخَرُّوا۟wakharrūand they fell downلَهُۥlahuto himسُجَّدًۭا ۖsujjadanprostrateوَقَالَwaqālaAnd he saidيَـٰٓأَبَتِyāabatiO my fatherهَـٰذَاhādhāThisتَأْوِيلُtawīlu(is the) interpretationرُءْيَـٰىَru'yāya(of) my dreamمِنmin(of) beforeقَبْلُqablu(of) beforeقَدْqadVerilyجَعَلَهَاjaʿalahāhas made itرَبِّىrabbīmy Lordحَقًّۭا ۖḥaqqantrueوَقَدْwaqadAnd indeedأَحْسَنَaḥsanaHe was goodبِىٓto meإِذْidhwhenأَخْرَجَنِىakhrajanīHe took me outمِنَminaofٱلسِّجْنِl-sij'nithe prisonوَجَآءَwajāaand broughtبِكُمbikumyouمِّنَminafromٱلْبَدْوِl-badwithe bedouin lifeمِنۢminafterبَعْدِbaʿdiafterأَنan[that]نَّزَغَnazaghahad caused discordٱلشَّيْطَـٰنُl-shayṭānuthe Shaitaanبَيْنِىbaynībetween meوَبَيْنَwabaynaand betweenإِخْوَتِىٓ ۚikh'watīmy brothersإِنَّinnaIndeedرَبِّىrabbīmy Lordلَطِيفٌۭlaṭīfun(is) Most Subtleلِّمَاlimāto whatيَشَآءُ ۚyashāuHe willsإِنَّهُۥinnahuIndeed, HeهُوَhuwaHeٱلْعَلِيمُl-ʿalīmu(is) the All-Knowerٱلْحَكِيمُl-ḥakīmuthe All-Wise
And he raised his parents upon the throne, and they bowed to him in prostration. And he said, "O my father, this is the explanation of my vision of before. My Lord has made it reality. And He was certainly good to me when He took me out of prison and brought you [here] from bedouin life after Satan had induced [estrangement] between me and my brothers. Indeed, my Lord is Subtle in what He wills. Indeed, it is He who is the Knowing, the Wise

۞ رَبِّ قَدْ ءَاتَيْتَنِى مِنَ ٱلْمُلْكِ وَعَلَّمْتَنِى مِن تَأْوِيلِ ٱلْأَحَادِيثِ ۚ فَاطِرَ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ أَنتَ وَلِىِّۦ فِى ٱلدُّنْيَا وَٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ ۖ تَوَفَّنِى مُسْلِمًۭا وَأَلْحِقْنِى بِٱلصَّـٰلِحِينَ
۞ رَبِّrabbiMy Lordقَدْqadindeedءَاتَيْتَنِىātaytanīyou have given meمِنَminaofٱلْمُلْكِl-mul'kithe sovereigntyوَعَلَّمْتَنِىwaʿallamtanīand taught meمِنminofتَأْوِيلِtawīlithe interpretationٱلْأَحَادِيثِ ۚl-aḥādīthiof the eventsفَاطِرَfāṭiraCreatorٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِl-samāwāti(of) the heavensوَٱلْأَرْضِwal-arḍiand the earthأَنتَantaYouوَلِىِّۦwaliyyī(are) my Protectorفِىinٱلدُّنْيَاl-dun'yāthe worldوَٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ ۖwal-ākhiratiand the HereafterتَوَفَّنِىtawaffanīCause me to dieمُسْلِمًۭاmus'liman(as) a Muslimوَأَلْحِقْنِىwa-alḥiq'nīand join meبِٱلصَّـٰلِحِينَbil-ṣāliḥīnawith the righteous
My Lord, You have given me [something] of sovereignty and taught me of the interpretation of dreams. Creator of the heavens and earth, You are my protector in this world and in the Hereafter. Cause me to die a Muslim and join me with the righteous
⤳ Link 12:101
102
ذَٰلِكَ مِنْ أَنۢبَآءِ ٱلْغَيْبِ نُوحِيهِ إِلَيْكَ ۖ وَمَا كُنتَ لَدَيْهِمْ إِذْ أَجْمَعُوٓا۟ أَمْرَهُمْ وَهُمْ يَمْكُرُونَ
ذَٰلِكَdhālikaThatمِنْmin(is) fromأَنۢبَآءِanbāithe newsٱلْغَيْبِl-ghaybi(of) the unseenنُوحِيهِnūḥīhiwhich We revealإِلَيْكَ ۖilaykato youوَمَاwamāAnd notكُنتَkuntayou wereلَدَيْهِمْladayhimwith themإِذْidhwhenأَجْمَعُوٓا۟ajmaʿūthey put togetherأَمْرَهُمْamrahumtheir planوَهُمْwahumwhile theyيَمْكُرُونَyamkurūna(were) plotting
That is from the news of the unseen which We reveal, [O Muhammad], to you. And you were not with them when they put together their plan while they conspired
⤳ Link 12:102
103
وَمَآ أَكْثَرُ ٱلنَّاسِ وَلَوْ حَرَصْتَ بِمُؤْمِنِينَ
وَمَآwamāAnd notأَكْثَرُaktharumostٱلنَّاسِl-nāsi(of) the mankindوَلَوْwalaweven thoughحَرَصْتَḥaraṣtayou desireبِمُؤْمِنِينَbimu'minīna(will be) believers
And most of the people, although you strive [for it], are not believers
⤳ Link 12:103
104
وَمَا تَسْـَٔلُهُمْ عَلَيْهِ مِنْ أَجْرٍ ۚ إِنْ هُوَ إِلَّا ذِكْرٌۭ لِّلْعَـٰلَمِينَ
وَمَاwamāAnd notتَسْـَٔلُهُمْtasaluhumyou ask themعَلَيْهِʿalayhifor itمِنْminanyأَجْرٍ ۚajrinrewardإِنْinNotهُوَhuwa(is) itإِلَّاillābutذِكْرٌۭdhik'runa reminderلِّلْعَـٰلَمِينَlil'ʿālamīnato the worlds
And you do not ask of them for it any payment. It is not except a reminder to the worlds
⤳ Link 12:104
105
وَكَأَيِّن مِّنْ ءَايَةٍۢ فِى ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ يَمُرُّونَ عَلَيْهَا وَهُمْ عَنْهَا مُعْرِضُونَ
وَكَأَيِّنwaka-ayyinAnd how manyمِّنْminofءَايَةٍۢāyatina Signفِىinٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِl-samāwātithe heavensوَٱلْأَرْضِwal-arḍiand the earthيَمُرُّونَyamurrūnathey passعَلَيْهَاʿalayhāover itوَهُمْwahumwhile theyعَنْهَاʿanhā(are) from themمُعْرِضُونَmuʿ'riḍūnathe ones who turn away
And how many a sign within the heavens and earth do they pass over while they, therefrom, are turning away
⤳ Link 12:105
106
وَمَا يُؤْمِنُ أَكْثَرُهُم بِٱللَّهِ إِلَّا وَهُم مُّشْرِكُونَ
وَمَاwamāAnd notيُؤْمِنُyu'minubelieveأَكْثَرُهُمaktharuhummost of themبِٱللَّهِbil-lahiin Allahإِلَّاillāexceptوَهُمwahumwhile theyمُّشْرِكُونَmush'rikūnaassociate partners with Him
And most of them believe not in Allah except while they associate others with Him
⤳ Link 12:106
107
أَفَأَمِنُوٓا۟ أَن تَأْتِيَهُمْ غَـٰشِيَةٌۭ مِّنْ عَذَابِ ٱللَّهِ أَوْ تَأْتِيَهُمُ ٱلسَّاعَةُ بَغْتَةًۭ وَهُمْ لَا يَشْعُرُونَ
أَفَأَمِنُوٓا۟afa-aminūDo they then feel secureأَنan(against) thatتَأْتِيَهُمْtatiyahumcomes to themغَـٰشِيَةٌۭghāshiyatunan overwhelmingمِّنْmin[of]عَذَابِʿadhābipunishmentٱللَّهِl-lahi(of) Allahأَوْaworتَأْتِيَهُمُtatiyahumucomes to themٱلسَّاعَةُl-sāʿatuthe Hourبَغْتَةًۭbaghtatansuddenlyوَهُمْwahumwhile theyلَا(do) notيَشْعُرُونَyashʿurūnaperceive
Then do they feel secure that there will not come to them an overwhelming [aspect] of the punishment of Allah or that the Hour will not come upon them suddenly while they do not perceive
⤳ Link 12:107
108
قُلْ هَـٰذِهِۦ سَبِيلِىٓ أَدْعُوٓا۟ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ ۚ عَلَىٰ بَصِيرَةٍ أَنَا۠ وَمَنِ ٱتَّبَعَنِى ۖ وَسُبْحَـٰنَ ٱللَّهِ وَمَآ أَنَا۠ مِنَ ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ
قُلْqulSayهَـٰذِهِۦhādhihiThisسَبِيلِىٓsabīlī(is) my wayأَدْعُوٓا۟adʿūI inviteإِلَىilātoٱللَّهِ ۚl-lahiAllahعَلَىٰʿalāwithبَصِيرَةٍbaṣīratininsightأَنَا۠anāIوَمَنِwamaniand whoeverٱتَّبَعَنِى ۖittabaʿanīfollows meوَسُبْحَـٰنَwasub'ḥānaAnd Glory beٱللَّهِl-lahi(to) Allahوَمَآwamāand notأَنَا۠anāI amمِنَminaofٱلْمُشْرِكِينَl-mush'rikīnathe polytheists
Say, "This is my way; I invite to Allah with insight, I and those who follow me. And exalted is Allah; and I am not of those who associate others with Him
⤳ Link 12:108
109
وَمَآ أَرْسَلْنَا مِن قَبْلِكَ إِلَّا رِجَالًۭا نُّوحِىٓ إِلَيْهِم مِّنْ أَهْلِ ٱلْقُرَىٰٓ ۗ أَفَلَمْ يَسِيرُوا۟ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ فَيَنظُرُوا۟ كَيْفَ كَانَ عَـٰقِبَةُ ٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِهِمْ ۗ وَلَدَارُ ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ خَيْرٌۭ لِّلَّذِينَ ٱتَّقَوْا۟ ۗ أَفَلَا تَعْقِلُونَ
وَمَآwamāAnd notأَرْسَلْنَاarsalnāWe sentمِنminbefore youقَبْلِكَqablikabefore youإِلَّاillābutرِجَالًۭاrijālanmenنُّوحِىٓnūḥīWe revealedإِلَيْهِمilayhimto themمِّنْminfrom (among)أَهْلِahli(the) peopleٱلْقُرَىٰٓ ۗl-qurā(of) the townshipsأَفَلَمْafalamSo have notيَسِيرُوا۟yasīrūthey traveledفِىinٱلْأَرْضِl-arḍithe earthفَيَنظُرُوا۟fayanẓurūand seenكَيْفَkayfahowكَانَkānawasعَـٰقِبَةُʿāqibatu(the) endٱلَّذِينَalladhīna(of) those whoمِنmin(were) before themقَبْلِهِمْ ۗqablihim(were) before themوَلَدَارُwaladāruAnd surely the homeٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِl-ākhirati(of) the Hereafterخَيْرٌۭkhayrun(is) bestلِّلَّذِينَlilladhīnafor those whoٱتَّقَوْا۟ ۗittaqawfear AllahأَفَلَاafalāThen will notتَعْقِلُونَtaʿqilūnayou use reason
And We sent not before you [as messengers] except men to whom We revealed from among the people of cities. So have they not traveled through the earth and observed how was the end of those before them? And the home of the Hereafter is best for those who fear Allah; then will you not reason
⤳ Link 12:109
110
حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَا ٱسْتَيْـَٔسَ ٱلرُّسُلُ وَظَنُّوٓا۟ أَنَّهُمْ قَدْ كُذِبُوا۟ جَآءَهُمْ نَصْرُنَا فَنُجِّىَ مَن نَّشَآءُ ۖ وَلَا يُرَدُّ بَأْسُنَا عَنِ ٱلْقَوْمِ ٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ
حَتَّىٰٓḥattāUntilإِذَاidhāwhenٱسْتَيْـَٔسَis'tayasagave up hopeٱلرُّسُلُl-rusuluthe Messengersوَظَنُّوٓا۟waẓannūand thoughtأَنَّهُمْannahumthat theyقَدْqadcertainlyكُذِبُوا۟kudhibūwere deniedجَآءَهُمْjāahumthen came to themنَصْرُنَاnaṣrunāOur helpفَنُجِّىَfanujjiyaand was savedمَنmanwhomنَّشَآءُ ۖnashāuWe willedوَلَاwalāAnd notيُرَدُّyuraddu(can) be repelledبَأْسُنَاbasunāOur punishmentعَنِʿanifromٱلْقَوْمِl-qawmithe peopleٱلْمُجْرِمِينَl-muj'rimīna(who are) criminals
[They continued] until, when the messengers despaired and were certain that they had been denied, there came to them Our victory, and whoever We willed was saved. And Our punishment cannot be repelled from the people who are criminals

111
لَقَدْ كَانَ فِى قَصَصِهِمْ عِبْرَةٌۭ لِّأُو۟لِى ٱلْأَلْبَـٰبِ ۗ مَا كَانَ حَدِيثًۭا يُفْتَرَىٰ وَلَـٰكِن تَصْدِيقَ ٱلَّذِى بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ وَتَفْصِيلَ كُلِّ شَىْءٍۢ وَهُدًۭى وَرَحْمَةًۭ لِّقَوْمٍۢ يُؤْمِنُونَ
لَقَدْlaqadVerilyكَانَkāna(there) isفِىinقَصَصِهِمْqaṣaṣihimtheir storiesعِبْرَةٌۭʿib'ratuna lessonلِّأُو۟لِىli-ulīfor menٱلْأَلْبَـٰبِ ۗl-albābi(of) understandingمَاNotكَانَkāna(it) isحَدِيثًۭاḥadīthana narrationيُفْتَرَىٰyuf'tarāinventedوَلَـٰكِنwalākinbutتَصْدِيقَtaṣdīqaa confirmationٱلَّذِىalladhī(of that) whichبَيْنَbayna(was) before itيَدَيْهِyadayhi(was) before itوَتَفْصِيلَwatafṣīlaand a detailed explanationكُلِّkulli(of) allشَىْءٍۢshayinthingsوَهُدًۭىwahudanand a guidanceوَرَحْمَةًۭwaraḥmatanand mercyلِّقَوْمٍۢliqawminfor a peopleيُؤْمِنُونَyu'minūnawho believe
There was certainly in their stories a lesson for those of understanding. Never was the Qur'an a narration invented, but a confirmation of what was before it and a detailed explanation of all things and guidance and mercy for a people who believe
