About Surah An-Nas
Revelation. Scholars differ on whether it was revealed in Makkah or Madinah. It is the last surah of the Qur'an.
Theme. An-Nas teaches the believer to seek refuge in Allah, the Lord, King and God of mankind, from the whisperer who withdraws, who whispers into people's hearts, from among jinn and people. With al-Falaq it forms the two surahs of refuge (al-Mu'awwidhatayn).
Authentic virtues
- “Have you not seen the verses revealed tonight, the like of which has never been seen? Qul a'udhu bi rabbil-falaq and Qul a'udhu bi rabbin-nas.” (Sahih Muslim 814)
- When he was ill, the Prophet ﷺ recited the surahs of refuge over himself. (Sahih al-Bukhari 5016)
- He recited al-Ikhlas, al-Falaq and an-Nas into his cupped hands every night before sleep and wiped over his body. (Sahih al-Bukhari 5017)
- Recited three times morning and evening with al-Ikhlas, “they will suffice you against everything.” (Sunan Abi Dawud 5082; Jami' at-Tirmidhi 3575, graded hasan sahih)
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ ٱلنَّاسِ
قُلْqulSayأَعُوذُaʿūdhuI seek refugeبِرَبِّbirabbiin (the) Lordٱلنَّاسِl-nāsi(of) mankind
Say, "I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind

مَلِكِ ٱلنَّاسِ
مَلِكِmaliki(The) Kingٱلنَّاسِl-nāsi(of) mankind
The Sovereign of mankind
3
إِلَـٰهِ ٱلنَّاسِ
إِلَـٰهِilāhi(The) Godٱلنَّاسِl-nāsi(of) mankind
The God of mankind
4
مِن شَرِّ ٱلْوَسْوَاسِ ٱلْخَنَّاسِ
مِنminFromشَرِّsharri(the) evilٱلْوَسْوَاسِl-waswāsi(of) the whispererٱلْخَنَّاسِl-khanāsithe one who withdraws
From the evil of the retreating whisperer
5
ٱلَّذِى يُوَسْوِسُ فِى صُدُورِ ٱلنَّاسِ
ٱلَّذِىalladhīThe one whoيُوَسْوِسُyuwaswisuwhispersفِىfīinصُدُورِṣudūri(the) breastsٱلنَّاسِl-nāsi(of) mankind
Who whispers [evil] into the breasts of mankind

مِنَ ٱلْجِنَّةِ وَٱلنَّاسِ
مِنَminaFromٱلْجِنَّةِl-jinatithe jinnوَٱلنَّاسِwal-nāsiand men
From among the jinn and mankind
