About Surah Al-Fatiha

Revelation. Revealed in Makkah. It opens the Qur'an and is recited in every unit (rak'ah) of every prayer.

Theme. Al-Fatiha praises Allah as Lord of all the worlds, the Most Merciful and the Master of the Day of Judgement. It then turns to worship and asks Allah for guidance to the straight path.

Authentic virtues

  • The Prophet ﷺ called it the greatest surah in the Qur'an and “the seven oft-repeated verses”. (Sahih al-Bukhari 4474)
  • “There is no prayer for the one who does not recite the Opening of the Book.” (Sahih al-Bukhari 756; Sahih Muslim 394)
  • A Companion recited it as ruqyah over a man who had been stung, and the Prophet ﷺ approved of it. (Sahih al-Bukhari 5736)
