Mosque statistics: United States
The Niyat mosque directory lists 1102 mosques across 601 cities in the United States, computed from an OpenStreetMap extract of 1244 mapped records. This page breaks the listings down by city and state, shows how many carry contact and facility tags, and measures how tightly the mapped mosques cluster. OpenStreetMap coverage is partial — these are mapped mosques, not a census of mosques.
Directory totals
| Measure | Count |
|---|---|
| Mosques listed in the directory (name and city mapped) | 1102 |
| Mapped records in the OpenStreetMap extract | 1244 |
| Records excluded from the directory (no name or no city mapped) | 142 |
| Cities with at least one listing | 601 |
OpenStreetMap data via the Niyat mosque directory, 23 August 2026; counts reflect mapped mosques, not all mosques. A listing requires a mapped name and city, so the directory count is slightly below the extract count.
Top 15 cities by mosque count

Mosques by state
Where a state, province, or region can be derived from the mapped address fields, the listings spread across them like this. Coverage of these fields is uneven, so treat the table as a lower bound per area.

OpenStreetMap data via the Niyat mosque directory, 23 August 2026; counts reflect mapped mosques, not all mosques. Regions come from the OpenStreetMap addr:state tag; 691 of 1244 mapped records are with a state tag, so this table understates untagged areas.
Contact and facility tagging
OpenStreetMap tags record whether a mapped mosque has a website, phone number, wheelchair access, or women's facilities. Tagging is sparse: these shares say how much the community has mapped, not how well-equipped the mosques are.
| Tag | Records | Share of listings |
|---|---|---|
| Website | 378 | 34.3% |
| Phone number | 220 | 20% |
| Wheelchair tag | 35 | 3.2% |
| Wheelchair marked accessible (yes/designated) | 27 | 2.5% |
| Women's facilities tag | 0 | — |
| Denomination tag | 229 | 20.8% |
OpenStreetMap data via the Niyat mosque directory, 23 August 2026; counts reflect mapped mosques, not all mosques. Percentages are of the 1102 listed mosques. Wheelchair values as tagged: designated: 1, limited: 4, no: 4, yes: 26. Women's facilities: not tagged in the current extract. An untagged mosque may still have the facility — absence of a tag is not absence of a feature.
Denomination, where tagged
Most mapped mosques carry no denomination tag. Among those that do, the breakdown is:
| Denomination | Mosques | Share of listings |
|---|---|---|
| Sunni | 145 | 13.2% |
| Ahmadiyya | 37 | 3.4% |
| Shia | 21 | 1.9% |
| Ismaili | 9 | 0.8% |
| Nation of Islam | 4 | 0.4% |
| Nondenominational | 4 | 0.4% |
| Muslim (unspecified) | 4 | 0.4% |
| Sufi | 3 | 0.3% |
| Dawoodi Bohra | 1 | 0.1% |
| The Mosque Cares | 1 | 0.1% |
| Not tagged | 873 | 79.2% |
OpenStreetMap data via the Niyat mosque directory, 23 August 2026; counts reflect mapped mosques, not all mosques. Denomination shown where tagged on OpenStreetMap (229 of 1244 mapped records); most mapped mosques carry no denomination tag, and tags can contain mapping errors.
How close are mapped mosques to each other?
The median nearest-neighbour distance is 3.7 km (2.3 mi): half of the 1241 mapped mosques with a computable neighbour in United States have another mapped mosque within 3.7 km. 3 mapped mosques have no other mapped mosque nearby in this extract. Dense city centres pull the median down; the figure reflects how tightly the mapped mosques cluster, not how far worshippers travel.
OpenStreetMap data via the Niyat mosque directory, 23 August 2026; counts reflect mapped mosques, not all mosques. Distances are great-circle (haversine) kilometres to the nearest other mapped mosque in the same country, found with an approximate spatial-grid search; medians are computed over mosques with at least one mapped neighbour.
Notes and method
Every figure on this page is computed from the OpenStreetMap-derived extract behind the Niyat mosque directory, refreshed 23 August 2026. OpenStreetMap coverage is partial: many mosques are unmapped, and a mapped mosque may be missing tags. The numbers therefore describe the map as it stands, not the full population of mosques in the United States.
