If you arrive late to Jumu'ah, join the imam immediately in whatever position he is in—do not wait for the next prayer.
Follow the imam, and count the rak'ah (one unit of prayer) only if you catch the imam’s bowing, or ruku, in the second rak'ah before he rises.
- 1You catch the imam’s ruku in the second rak'ah: complete one more rak'ah after the imam gives salam. This is counted as Jumu'ah.
- 2You arrive after the imam has risen from ruku in the second rak'ah, or after the prayer ends: pray four rak'ahs of Dhuhr instead.
- 3You arrive while the imam is giving the sermon: sit quietly and listen; if the prayer has begun, join it immediately.
This is the majority position. In the Hanafi school, joining the imam at any point before his final salam counts as catching Jumu'ah, so you complete two rak'ahs. Jumu'ah is a distinct congregational prayer, and Allah commands believers to proceed to His remembrance when the call is made (Qur’an 62:9).
