Qur’an verses about marriage

Spouses as a sign of Allah: created from one soul, placed together for tranquillity, with affection and mercy between them.

· 7 ayat

The Qur’an describes marriage less as a contract than as one of the signs of Allah: mates created from one another so that each finds rest in the other, with affection and mercy placed between them. Husband and wife are called clothing for each other, the unmarried are to be helped to marry, and spouses are told to live together in kindness even through dislike. Each verse is shown in Arabic with the Saheeh International translation and a short note on what it says.

The verses

1. Surah Ar-Rum (30:21)

And of His signs is that He created for you from yourselves mates that you may find tranquillity in them; and He placed between you affection and mercy. Indeed in that are signs for a people who give thought.

Listed among the signs of Allah in Ar-Rum: mates from yourselves for tranquillity, with affection and mercy placed between you.

2. Surah An-Nisa (4:1)

O mankind, fear your Lord, who created you from one soul and created from it its mate and dispersed from both of them many men and women. And fear Allah, through whom you ask one another, and the wombs. Indeed Allah is ever, over you, an Observer.

The opening of An-Nisa: humanity was created from one soul and its mate, and from them many men and women were spread.

3. Surah Al-A'raf (7:189)

It is He who created you from one soul and created from it its mate that he might dwell in security with her. And when he covers her, she carries a light burden and continues therein. And when it becomes heavy, they both invoke Allah, their Lord, "If You should give us a good [child], we will surely be among the grateful."

The same origin is retold: a mate created so that one may dwell in security with the other, and the couple praying together for a good child.

4. Surah Al-Baqarah (2:187)

It has been made permissible for you the night preceding fasting to go to your wives [for sexual relations]. They are clothing for you and you are clothing for them. Allah knows that you used to deceive yourselves, so He accepted your repentance and forgave you. So now, have relations with them and seek that which Allah has decreed for you. And eat and drink until the white thread of dawn becomes distinct to you from the black thread [of night]. Then complete the fast until the sunset. And do not have relations with them as long as you are staying for worship in the mosques. These are the limits [set by] Allah, so do not approach them. Thus does Allah make clear His ordinances to the people that they may become righteous.

Within the fasting verses: spouses are clothing for each other, and relations on the nights of the fast are made lawful.

O you who have believed, it is not lawful for you to inherit women by compulsion. And do not make difficulties for them in order to take [back] part of what you gave them unless they commit a clear immorality. And live with them in kindness. For if you dislike them - perhaps you dislike a thing and Allah makes therein much good.

Addressed to husbands: live with your wives in kindness, for you may dislike a thing in which Allah has placed much good.
