Inshallah meaning

Also written Inshallah, In sha Allah, Insha'Allah, Insha Allah, Inshaallah, InshAllah

إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ

in shā’ Allāh

“If Allah wills”

Short answer

Inshallah (إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ) means “if Allah wills”. Muslims say it about anything they plan or hope to do in the future, because the Qur’an tells believers not to say “I will do it tomorrow” without adding it (18:23-24).

What Inshallah means

The phrase is a short conditional sentence: in (if) + shā’a (he willed) + Allāh. In Arabic grammar the past-tense verb after in points to the future, so the sense is “if Allah wills it”. Saying it is an act of humility: you intend to act, and you admit that the outcome is in Allah’s hands.

It is not a polite way of saying no. The scholars explain that it goes with a real intention. If you do not mean to do something, the honest answer is to say so.

شَاءَshā’a(He) wills / willed

When to say it

  • When you say you will do something later: “I will call you tomorrow, inshallah.”
  • When you hope for something: “Inshallah the exam goes well.”
  • When you make a promise or an appointment.
  • In duas and comforting words, as the Prophet ﷺ did when visiting the sick: lā ba’sa, ṭahūrun in shā’ Allāh (“no harm, it is a purification, if Allah wills”).

How to reply

There is no fixed reply. People often answer with inshallah too, or with a short dua such as āmīn. If someone says “I will come, inshallah”, it is fine to simply say “inshallah” back.

Where it comes from

In the Qur’an

And never say of anything, "Indeed, I will do that tomorrow," Except [when adding], "If Allah wills." And remember your Lord when you forget [it] and say, "Perhaps my Lord will guide me to what is nearer than this to right conduct."

Qur’an 18:23-24 · The direct command: never say you will do something tomorrow without “if Allah wills”.

Certainly has Allah showed to His Messenger the vision in truth. You will surely enter al-Masjid al-Haram, if Allah wills, in safety, with your heads shaved and [hair] shortened, not fearing [anyone]. He knew what you did not know and has arranged before that a conquest near [at hand].

Qur’an 48:27 · Allah Himself uses the phrase about the believers entering the Sacred Mosque.

In the hadith

The Prophet Sulayman said he would visit his wives that night and each would bear a son who would fight for Allah. He did not add “in sha Allah”, and only one gave birth, to a half-formed child. The Prophet ﷺ said that had he said it, his wish would have been fulfilled.

Sahih al-Bukhari 5242; Sahih Muslim 1654

When visiting a sick person the Prophet ﷺ said: lā ba’sa, ṭahūrun in shā’ Allāh.

Sahih al-Bukhari 5656

At the graveyard he said: wa innā in shā’ Allāhu bikum la-lāḥiqūn (“and we will, if Allah wills, join you”).

Sahih Muslim 975

Common mistakes

  • Using it as a soft “no”. It belongs with a real intention. Saying it while planning not to come is a broken promise with Allah’s name attached.
  • Writing it as one word in Arabic script. إنشاء الله means “the creation of Allah”. The correct Arabic is three words: إن شاء الله.
  • Mixing it up with mashallah. Inshallah looks to the future (“if Allah wills”). Mashallah looks at something that has already happened (“what Allah has willed”).

Frequently asked questions

What does inshallah mean?

Inshallah means “if Allah wills”. Muslims say it about future plans and hopes, following Qur’an 18:23-24.

Is it inshallah or in sha Allah?

Both are English transliterations of the same Arabic, إن شاء الله. In English letters no spelling is wrong. Many prefer “in sha Allah” because it mirrors the three Arabic words. In Arabic script it must be written as three words.

What do you reply when someone says inshallah?

There is no fixed reply. You can say inshallah back, or say āmīn if it was a hope or a dua.

Can non-Muslims say inshallah?

Yes. It is an Arabic phrase that Arab Christians and many non-Muslims also use. Anyone can say it respectfully.

Is it a sin to forget to say inshallah?

Forgetting is not a sin. Qur’an 18:24 says “remember your Lord when you forget”, so say it when you remember.

How this page works and sources

Qur’an text and its English meaning are taken from the same Uthmani text and translation the Niyat app uses, and each ayah links to its place in our Qur’an reader. Hadith are cited by collection and number (Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, Sunan Abi Dawud, Jami at-Tirmidhi, Sunan an-Nasa’i, Sunan Ibn Majah); where a narration has a weak chain we say so. Hadith wording is summarised in plain English. Where the schools of law differ, the page says so in one line. The sound button uses your browser’s own Arabic voice; nothing is sent anywhere.
