Eid Mubarak meaning

Also written Eid Mubarak, Eid Saeed, Id Mubarak, Eid Mubarik, Khair Mubarak

عِيدٌ مُبَارَكٌ

‘Īd mubārak

“Blessed Eid”

Short answer

Eid Mubarak (عِيدٌ مُبَارَكٌ) means “blessed Eid”. It is said on both Eids. The greeting the Companions used was taqabbalallāhu minnā wa minkum (“may Allah accept from us and from you”). Eid al-Fitr 2027 is expected around 9 March and Eid al-Adha around 16 May.

What Eid Mubarak means

‘Īd comes from a root meaning “to return”: a day of joy that comes back every year. Islam has two: Eid al-Fitr after Ramadan and Eid al-Adha on 10 Dhul Hijjah. “Eid Mubarak” is a customary greeting; scholars say Eid greetings are a matter of good custom, and the Companions’ own words were taqabbalallāhu minnā wa minkum.

Where it comes from

In the Qur’an

The month of Ramadhan [is that] in which was revealed the Qur'an, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion. So whoever sights [the new moon of] the month, let him fast it; and whoever is ill or on a journey - then an equal number of other days. Allah intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship and [wants] for you to complete the period and to glorify Allah for that [to] which He has guided you; and perhaps you will be grateful.

Qur’an 2:185 · “…to complete the number and glorify Allah for having guided you, so that you may be grateful.”

In the hadith

Jubayr ibn Nufayr said: when the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ met on the day of Eid, they said to each other taqabbalallāhu minnā wa minka.

Ibn Hajar, Fath al-Bari (Book of the Two Eids), chain graded hasan

Common mistakes

  • Thinking “Eid Mubarak” is a bid‘ah. Most scholars treat Eid greetings as good custom. Any kind words or dua are fine.
  • Forgetting the dua. Adding taqabbalallāhu minnā wa minkum follows the Companions’ practice.

How this page works and sources

Qur’an text and its English meaning are taken from the same Uthmani text and translation the Niyat app uses, and each ayah links to its place in our Qur’an reader. Hadith are cited by collection and number (Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, Sunan Abi Dawud, Jami at-Tirmidhi, Sunan an-Nasa’i, Sunan Ibn Majah); where a narration has a weak chain we say so. Hadith wording is summarised in plain English. Where the schools of law differ, the page says so in one line. The sound button uses your browser’s own Arabic voice; nothing is sent anywhere.
