Allahumma Barik Lana meaning

Also written Allahumma barik lana, Allahumma barik lana fima razaqtana, Allahuma barik lana, Allahumma barik lana fi rajab, Allahumma barik lana fihi

اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ لَنَا

Allāhumma bārik lanā

“O Allah, bless us”

Short answer

Allahumma barik lana (اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ لَنَا) means “O Allah, bless us”. It begins several duas: for food (fīmā razaqtanā), for milk (fīhi wa zidnā minh), for a city and its harvest, and the well-known Rajab dua. Their sources differ in strength, and each is listed below.

What Allahumma Barik Lana means

“O Allah, bless us” asks for barakah: that what we have lasts, grows and does good. The words that follow say what we want blessed: our food, our drink, our city, our time.

Where it comes from

In the hadith

When Allah feeds one of you, let him say “O Allah, bless it for us and feed us with better than it”; and when given milk, “O Allah, bless it for us and give us more of it”, for nothing suffices for both food and drink except milk.

Sunan Abi Dawud 3730; Jami at-Tirmidhi 3455 (graded hasan by at-Tirmidhi)

The Prophet ﷺ said: Allāhumma bārik lanā fī Shāminā, Allāhumma bārik lanā fī Yamaninā (“O Allah, bless us in our Sham and our Yemen”).

Sahih al-Bukhari 1037

When people brought the first fruit of the season, he said the Medina dua above.

Sahih Muslim 1373

Common mistakes

  • Treating the Rajab dua as a firm sunnah. Its chain is weak (one narrator, Za’idah ibn Abi ar-Ruqad, is weak). Scholars allow asking Allah for these things in your own words, without claiming the wording is from the Prophet ﷺ.
  • Thinking “fima razaqtana” is in Bukhari or Muslim. It is in Ibn as-Sunni’s collection with a weak chain. The well-established food sunnah is to say bismillah before and alhamdulillah after.

How this page works and sources

Qur’an text and its English meaning are taken from the same Uthmani text and translation the Niyat app uses, and each ayah links to its place in our Qur’an reader. Hadith are cited by collection and number (Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, Sunan Abi Dawud, Jami at-Tirmidhi, Sunan an-Nasa’i, Sunan Ibn Majah); where a narration has a weak chain we say so. Hadith wording is summarised in plain English. Where the schools of law differ, the page says so in one line. The sound button uses your browser’s own Arabic voice; nothing is sent anywhere.
