In short
Improving focus in prayer, known as khushu' (humble attentiveness), usually comes through preparation and gentle practice rather than forcing your mind to be completely empty.
Step by step
- 1Pray at the beginning of the prayer time when possible, and remove distractions such as your phone.
- 2Before saying the opening takbir, pause and remind yourself that you are standing before Allah.
- 3Learn the meaning of what you recite, especially Al-Fatihah and the tashahhud (the testimony recited while sitting in prayer).
- 4Vary the short surahs and supplications you know so the words do not become automatic.
- 5Pray calmly, giving each posture its due stillness. The Prophet ﷺ taught a man who had prayed hastily to return and pray with calmness in bowing, standing, prostration, and sitting (Sahih Muslim, Hadith 885).
- 6When your mind wanders, do not become frustrated; gently return your attention to the words and the fact that Allah knows your effort.
Keep in mind
Try arriving a few minutes early, making wudu with awareness, and taking one quiet breath before beginning. Consistency matters more than achieving perfect concentration in every prayer.
