Qur’an verses about charity

A seed that grows seven spikes with a hundred grains each: the Qur’an's picture of what giving becomes.

· 7 ayat

Spending in the way of Allah is one of the Qur’an's most vivid subjects. A single gift is pictured as a seed that grows seven hundredfold, giving in secret is praised, and charity spoiled by reminders and hurt is warned against. The Qur’an also sets the bar: you will not reach righteousness until you give from what you love. Each verse is shown in Arabic with the Saheeh International translation and a short note on what it says.

The verses

1. Surah Al-Baqarah (2:261)

The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed [of grain] which grows seven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grains. And Allah multiplies [His reward] for whom He wills. And Allah is all-Encompassing and Knowing.

Those who spend in the way of Allah are like a seed that grows seven spikes, each with a hundred grains, and Allah multiplies for whom He wills.

2. Surah Al-Baqarah (2:262)

Those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah and then do not follow up what they have spent with reminders [of it] or [other] injury will have their reward with their Lord, and there will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve.

The reward is kept for those who do not follow their giving with reminders or hurt; they will have no fear and will not grieve.

3. Surah Al-Baqarah (2:271)

If you disclose your charitable expenditures, they are good; but if you conceal them and give them to the poor, it is better for you, and He will remove from you some of your misdeeds [thereby]. And Allah, with what you do, is [fully] Acquainted.

Giving openly is good, but giving secretly to the poor is better, and it removes some misdeeds.

Those who spend their wealth [in Allah 's way] by night and by day, secretly and publicly - they will have their reward with their Lord. And no fear will there be concerning them, nor will they grieve.

Never will you attain the good [reward] until you spend [in the way of Allah] from that which you love. And whatever you spend - indeed, Allah is Knowing of it.

Indeed, the men who practice charity and the women who practice charity and [they who] have loaned Allah a goodly loan - it will be multiplied for them, and they will have a noble reward.

The men and women who give in charity, and lend Allah a goodly loan, will have it multiplied and a noble reward.

So fear Allah as much as you are able and listen and obey and spend [in the way of Allah]; it is better for your selves. And whoever is protected from the stinginess of his soul - it is those who will be the successful.

Fear Allah as much as you are able, listen, obey and spend; whoever is saved from the stinginess of his soul is successful.
