Essential Daily Duas Every Muslim Should Know
There are hundreds of duas in the Sunnah, and that can feel overwhelming when you're just getting started. The truth is, you don't need to memorize all of them at once. Start with the ones that fit naturally into what you already do every day — waking up, eating, leaving your house, going to bed.
These 15 masnoon duas cover the moments that repeat daily. Once you learn even a handful, you'll notice something shift: ordinary routines start feeling like acts of worship. That's the whole point.
Morning Duas — Starting the Day Right
1. Dua Upon Waking Up
The Prophet (peace be upon him) would say this the moment he opened his eyes. It's a simple acknowledgment: Allah gave you another day. (Sahih al-Bukhari 6324)
Meaning: All praise is for Allah who gave us life after having taken it from us, and unto Him is the resurrection.
2. Morning Remembrance (Dua for Protection)
This morning dua covers a lot of ground in just a few words. The Prophet (peace be upon him) never left it. (Abu Dawud 5068)
Allahumma bika asbahna wa bika amsayna, wa bika nahya wa bika namutu wa ilaykan-nushur
Meaning: O Allah, by Your leave we have reached the morning, and by Your leave we reach the evening. By Your leave we live and by Your leave we die, and unto You is the resurrection.
3. Dua When Looking in the Mirror
A quiet moment of gratitude most people overlook. You're asking Allah to beautify your character the way He beautified your appearance.
Allahumma anta hassanta khalqi fa-hassin khuluqi
Meaning: O Allah, You have made my appearance beautiful, so make my character beautiful too.
Duas for Meals — Before and After Eating
4. Dua Before Eating
The dua before eating is probably the easiest one on this list. Just say Bismillah. If you forget and remember mid-meal, say the extended version below. (Sahih Muslim 2017)
Bismillah
Meaning: In the name of Allah.
If you forget at the start:
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ أَوَّلَهُ وَآخِرَهُ
Bismillahi awwalahu wa akhirahu
Meaning: In the name of Allah at its beginning and at its end.
5. Dua After Eating
After finishing your meal, thank Allah for the provision. This dua acknowledges that the food came from Him, not from your own effort alone. (Sahih al-Bukhari 5458)
Meaning: All praise is for Allah who fed me this and provided it for me without any might or power on my part.
6. Dua When Drinking Water
A brief, often-forgotten Sunnah. After drinking, say:
Alhamdu lillahil-ladhi saqana 'adhban furatan bi-rahmatihi wa lam yaj'alhu milhan ujajan bi-dhunubina
Meaning: All praise is for Allah who gave us fresh, sweet water by His mercy and did not make it salty and bitter because of our sins.
Duas for Leaving and Entering Home
7. Dua When Leaving Home
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said that whoever recites this dua, Allah will suffice him, protect him, and guide him, and Shaytan will turn away from him. (Abu Dawud 5095, Tirmidhi 3426)
Meaning: In the name of Allah, I place my trust in Allah, and there is no might nor power except with Allah.
8. Dua When Entering Home
Greet your home with the name of Allah. It sets the tone for everything that happens inside.
Bismillahi walajna, wa bismillahi kharajna, wa 'alallahi Rabbina tawakkalna
Meaning: In the name of Allah we enter, and in the name of Allah we leave, and upon our Lord we place our trust.
Duas for the Masjid
9. Dua When Entering the Masjid
Step in with your right foot and say this dua. It's a request for Allah's mercy — you're entering His house, after all. (Sahih Muslim 713)
Allahummaf-tah li abwaba rahmatik
Meaning: O Allah, open for me the doors of Your mercy.
10. Dua When Leaving the Masjid
Step out with your left foot and ask Allah for His bounty. You've just worshipped — now you're heading back into the world to earn your provision.
Allahumma inni as'aluka min fadlik
Meaning: O Allah, I ask You from Your bounty.
Duas for Travel and Transport
11. Dua When Riding a Vehicle
Every time you get into a car, bus, or any transport. The Quran references this in Surah Az-Zukhruf (43:13-14). It's a recognition that you couldn't control this vehicle on your own — Allah made it possible.
Subhanal-ladhi sakh-khara lana hadha wa ma kunna lahu muqrinin, wa inna ila Rabbina lamunqalibun
Meaning: Glory to Him who has subjected this to us, and we could never have it by our efforts. And verily, to our Lord we shall return.
Evening and Bedtime Duas
12. Evening Remembrance
The evening counterpart to dua #2. Say it after Asr or at Maghrib.
Allahumma bika amsayna wa bika asbahna, wa bika nahya wa bika namutu wa ilaykal-masir
Meaning: O Allah, by Your leave we have reached the evening, and by Your leave we reach the morning. By Your leave we live and by Your leave we die, and unto You is the return.
13. Dua Before Sleeping
Sleep is described in the Quran as a minor death. This dua reflects that — you're placing your soul in Allah's hands and trusting Him to return it. (Sahih al-Bukhari 6324)
Bismika Allahumma amutu wa ahya
Meaning: In Your name, O Allah, I die and I live.
14. Dua for Protection at Night
The Prophet (peace be upon him) would cup his hands, blow into them, recite the last three surahs of the Quran (Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, An-Nas), and wipe over his body three times before sleeping. (Sahih al-Bukhari 5017) Along with that practice, this dua asks for protection through the night:
اللَّهُمَّ قِنِي عَذَابَكَ يَوْمَ تَبْعَثُ عِبَادَكَ
Allahumma qini 'adhabaka yawma tab'athu 'ibadak
Meaning: O Allah, protect me from Your punishment on the Day You resurrect Your servants.
15. Dua When Turning Over at Night
If you wake up in the middle of the night and turn over, say this. Most people don't know about this one, but it's authentically narrated. (Sahih al-Bukhari 1154)
La ilaha illallahul-Wahidul-Qahhar, Rabbus-samawati wal-ardi wa ma baynahumal-'Azizul-Ghaffar
Meaning: There is no god but Allah, the One, the Prevailing. Lord of the heavens and the earth and all between them, the Almighty, the Oft-Forgiving.
How to Actually Build This Habit
Don't try to memorize all 15 at once. Pick two or three that fit your routine, like the dua upon waking and the dua before sleeping. Once they become automatic, add more.
A few things that help:
- Understand what you're saying. These aren't magic words. When you know the meaning, the dua becomes a conversation with Allah instead of a recitation.
- Attach each dua to a trigger. The dua for leaving home goes with grabbing your keys. The dua before eating goes with sitting down at the table. Link the dua to something you already do.
- Keep them visible. A small card on your bathroom mirror, a sticky note on your dashboard. Whatever works.
- Use an app. Having all the duas in one place with Arabic text, transliteration, and audio makes the learning curve much gentler.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "The most beloved of deeds to Allah are those that are most consistent, even if they are small." (Sahih al-Bukhari 6464). Fifteen duas might feel like a lot, but each one takes five seconds. Combined, they take less time than scrolling through your phone on the way to work.
The difference is that these five-second moments accumulate into something enormous on your scale of deeds. That's a trade worth making.
